Hey Gang,
Seeing as how the topic of conversation on this thread is predominantly end game at this point, I thought I might ask a question.
If you had to re-roll a new toon, what would you make and why? Taking into account of course you're going to have to level this toon in the process ...
I am a confirmed altoholic, and have played almost all classes at one time or another. All of the classes are pretty reasonably balanced in damage/healing, so mostly it's a matter of playstyle or even just that you may like one's animations over another's. For brevity's sake, I'll only talk about ones at the level cap:
My main is a Warrior, which I rolled the week the game went live. Ended up being a Tank. Learned it, lived it, love it, and have done that for the entire time, with the exception of a couple months after TBC was released. This is the Role in the game that I enjoy most, since you're up front and fully involved at all times.
My #2 is a tossup between my Warlock
(also rolled in the original game), and my Death Knight. Both are perfectly simple to level, with the DK having the obvious advantage of starting many levels ahead.
The Warlock is fun - I like playing Demonology best since to play it well it takes a certain aggression, but am comfortable with all 3 specs. And I use her as my go~to
"take a break from tanking and relax" toon. Leveling was simple: Just let your pet take the beating.
The DK is really another Warrior with abilities that take more forethought and planning to get the best out of. That statement is NOT a criticism: But rather an observation. She's also main spec Tank, and lately that's all I've been doing on her since there's just no call for Melee damage dealers. If my Warrior was taken away from me, my Deathknight would be my new main.
My #3 is my Priest. Actually leveled her second with the intention of being my #2 in this expansion. But I've had a hard time getting used to the healing mechanics in the current iteration of the game. So she's been sitting until such time as I decide to pull my head out of the dark/smelly place it's currently embedded in and re-learn. Until then, she's my #4, falling in the pecking order, and at risk of being bench'd for a long time.
I have a Hunter in the works, and as a Pet Class the playstyle is fairly close to my Warlock's. Probably the easiest class in the game to level, and has a bit of a bad reputation since even dummies can be successful. But *know* that a skilled and well~played hunter is a great asset to any group, and can lay down *serious* damage.
For Versatility - The only class which can do *any* role in the game
(Tank, Melee DPS, Ranged DPS, and Heal) is a Druid. Mine is Feral at the moment, but at various times I've done all roles. After Hunters, I would pick a Feral Druid as the easiest to level because of their complete self sufficiency.
I have a little rogue - And she's fun, but mostly feels like a DPS Warrior who can sneak around.
My (Frost) Mage is the caretaker of my Bank guild. I liked playing her, but in terms of leveling, the Warlock's Pet gave that toon the edge over the more fragile Mage.
I've tried twice to level a Paladin. Both times, I fell asleep somewhere between level 30 and 40, never really woke back up, and eventually deleted the toon.
