Every single pizza delivery company in my area has driver-owned vehicles and they all get the $2 delivery fee per order. If they take 5 pies out to 5 deliveries, that's $10 for a single trip costing them less than $1 in gas.

When I was job hunting, the drivers would get anywhere from 50% to 75% of the $1.50-$2.00 charge.

I usually tip at least $4 + change on the dollar, I see no reason to stiff the dude that's driving a car bringing my food nice and hot to me.

typically the driver gets $1 and the place pockets $1.

I never got a dime.

Online orders: Half went to the store, Half went to the online ordering company.
Call in orders: It all went to the store (to pay the in house people)

I got paid hourly (for doing in-store work when I wasn't delivering) and got all my tips.

I knew a lot (15-20?) delivery drivers during school and I'd say the vast, vast majority of them made minimum wage. FWIW, I've had delivery jobs where I was paid hourly ($0.50 paid for each delivery), paid hourly on the books (no % of the delivery charge), and then paid just in delivery charges. Varies greatly depending on the establishment type and how they pay you. Also if it is your car or not.

As for the OP, the tip was fine for what it was.
