And that guy's comments aren't totally reliable. AFAIK, Pizza Hut doesn't charge for delivery around here (unless they've started in the past couple years... been a while since I ordered). The large local chain that does add a delivery charge ($2) hands it right to the driver.

So, much like 99% of everything else written on the Internet, those comments are totally subjective to the author's experience.

That said, I'll tip less when I get hit with a DC. $1-2 usually. $3-4 without, and I consider that pretty damned generous.

As a teenager I worked as Pizza Hut, and a decent driver could, during the peak hours and with proper route planning, easily do 8 deliveries an hour averaging $2-3 per delivery, making them by far the highest paid non-management in the place. Since then, of course, gas has gone up, and you have to consider wear & tear, but it was an easy $50-100 in 2-3 hours.

Back around 1989/1990 I worked in a chinese place with a dominos or pizza hut in the outparcel.

We were getting usually a min of $2 an order in tips, averaging about $3 per order at the end of the night. During season the average tip was much higher, we serviced a large equestrian community.

The pizza guys were usually getting 'rounded' up to the next dollar. A $19.25 order would gain them $0.75. They took a TON more orders than us, placed far more miles on their car, yet we banked more cash.

We would also get .25 per order paid by the restaurant and .50 cents if the order was near the outskirts of our delivery area. I never asked if the pizza guys got this too.

The pizza guy who gave you the look was in the wrong. However, not tipping is pretty low considering they have to buy their own gas and fix their own car (for the most part I know some places are not like this). If as some of you say they should "just quit" if they don't like it, then who will deliver your pizza?

I personally like that I can order a pizza and have it come to my house without me having to go get it. Without tips there would be 0 reason for anyone to take a minumum wage job that makes you buy gas and put tons of miles on your car. You can choose to not tip if you want that's your choice, but I personally feel that drivers don't have an easy job and I appreciate the service they provide (for extremely cheap if you think about it, how much would the USPS charge to deliver that pizza? and it wouldn't be anywhere near hot when you got it a day later).

Yes I always if they have a tip jar or line for tip on the CC receipt.

If you don't then you are being cheap.

I'd have to disagree. While I do occasionally tip, as far as I know, Starbucks employees are actually paid fairly well for the work. Thus, I don't necessarily always feel the need to tip them.

Same goes for Subway employees and their restaurants where a "tip cup" has been put up.

Edit: As for the OP, a $2 tip on a $10 pizza is plenty. I generally give the same amount (~20% of my order), although I include the delivery charge when calculating said 20%. It usually works out to about ~$4 or 4.50 on a $20-ish order.

eh, it probably costs the the pizza dude at least 2.00 in gas to deliver the pizza, if you dont feel like tipping the driver at least $3, go pick it up yourself.
how much of the delivery fee does the drive see?
$10 minimum order isnt his fault either..it isnt like a restaurant.

Unless the car the person is driving is a real POS, then he'd have to be about 10 miles away for it to cost $2 in gas... and most places don't deliver that far out. Tipping 20% on a pizza is generous, telling someone they should tip at least 30% is asinine.

The driver probably doesn't see a penny of that delivery fee, but considering that there is no tip required at all, but if someone is being charged a fee to have something delivered then it's pretty asinine to consider that they should still go pick it up if they aren't paying 250% of the fee to deliver it.

I happily tip, but it just seems like these threads become a bitch fest of people (who usually end up being pizza drivers or waiters) saying that no matter how much you tip you should always tip more.

The bottom line for me is that if they aren't happy with my tip or anyone else's tip or the reality that people aren't required to tip then they need to find a job that doesn't work on gratuity.

sure drivers sometimes take 10 miles for a delivery. there was times i had 4 to make at once. so even though one guy was a mile away i still drove 2-3 miles to make it.

Well, in fairness to the the delivery drivers always wanting a larger tip - I have yet to meet anyone in any profession who didn't think they should be paid more, that's just human nature.

Having said that I agree, if they don't like the tips then suck it up or get another job.

I tip most other employees, but I do not tip the Starbucks guy.

He makes coffee, day in, day out, that's it. No other coffee place even WANTS my tip, so what makes Starbucks so special as far as tips go.

a) did he climb 10 flights of stairs to get to you?
b) were the bills really dirty?
c) were you naked?

hell me answering the door naked is tip enough!

I sometimes deduct the delivery charge from the tip, because the delivery dude himself told me that it goes to them. Usually I'll still jack it up a little bit, so without the charge being removed, it's still not horrible, but with that added, it's maybe 30-35%.

I believe Papa Johns around here charges 1.95 per delivery.

Do you know if 100% of the delivery charges for Papa Johns go to the delivery guy? I was always curious about that and they are the only pizza joint I order from.

I love people who think delivery drivers lack memory, never communicate between them, and don't have ball sweat.

That might be the funniest thing Ive ever read

They told me that they get it, but he could've meant a portion. I'd assume that he'd say a portion of it if he meant that though. You could try asking them next time to see if they say the same thing. The PJ closest to me is about 8 miles away (just straight line distance) and is maybe more around 12 miles by driving... so they have to go a bit further. I'd order from Pizza Hut which is more like 2 miles away via driving, but they don't have online ordering.

EDIT:

Another annoyance I've found is that PJ's online ordering doesn't work with NoScript... even if I enable scripts globally. So I always order on my XP laptop that doesn't have NoScript installed 🙁.

Having worked as a pizza delivery for a short time, we use to always try the guilt look to get customers to give us more money. If I could tell you all the things we use to do to delivery pizza's on the way to the customer, you could not ever order a delivery pizza again.

Personally, I'm so sick of pizza from eating all I can, but I always tell my friends NEVER to order a pizza by delivery.
