Do drivers keep the delivery charge? I always wondered that.

Otherwise, $2 might not have covered his mileage to deliver it.

I wonder, if you open a pizza joint, can you 1099 your drivers so they can expense mileage? The IRS rate plus the tips would make it a decent enough gig for a high school kid, providing that they use their car for 51% deliveries or whatever is required to take that deduction.

typically the driver gets $1 and the place pockets $1.

I don't tip them at all.

do they ever say fuck you or anything like that?

They usually don't know English very well. Even when they do, no they don't say anything.

If there isn't a delivery charge already then I give them a buck or two. Or if it's raining or the like I'll tip even with a delivery charge. Meh.

Do you ever get the same delivery guy? If so, have you ever gotten any surprise sauce that was yellow, bubbly or brown?

Usually not the same guy, no.

It's not my business whether they keep the delivery charge or not, and I honestly don't care if they don't get it. Tough luck.

That's a 20% tip. I think at most places, the drivers don't get the delivery fee. Sounds more than fine to me.

Guess it depends on how far they have to drive to deliver it to you. How much gas would you use to pick it up, and how much time would you spend doing it?

$2 charge, and $2 tip really isn't that much if you think about it. I probably would have given him more if there was any distance involved.

Man, you're a douchebag.

Can you tell us all what it's like to be "that guy"?

Drivers get about half the delivery charge. Usually $.75 or a dollar. Here's my usual tip breakdown:

$4-5+: You just made my night.
$3: I like you, you're cool.
$1-2: Hey thanks, have a good night.
Change on the dollar: you, sir, are a douche.
Change on the dollar AND you're a prick, we talk shit on you when we get back to the store, in the future other drivers rochambeau to get stuck with your delivery.
Repeat the above scenario 3-5 times, and your house gets egged.

They get paid over $8 an hour and in many places over $9 and they get to deduct their milage. $2 tip is plenty.

Yeah, if he lives in California.

I ordered a pizza that cost $10. There was a $2 delivery fee. I tipped the guy $2 on top of the delivery $2 fee.

I paid $14 for a $10 pizza delivered.

The guy gave me a dirty look. I said thank you after he handed me the pizza. The guy didn't say a word and walked away.

Was I wrong?

There's no point in giving tips if you're already being charged a delivery fee.

eh, it probably costs the the pizza dude at least 2.00 in gas to deliver the pizza, if you dont feel like tipping the driver at least $3, go pick it up yourself.
how much of the delivery fee does the drive see?
$10 minimum order isnt his fault either..it isnt like a restaurant.

Well then, maybe the delivery guy should find another line of work.

$2 is cheap for a tip. Since the store collects the delivery charge, not the driver, it is considered part of the total. Tip on top of the total.

They really need to stop calling it a delivery charge, since it goes to the restaurant, not the driver.

2 bucks in gas? Is he driving a Hummer to deliver pizzas?

Most places have a pretty strict circle in which they deliver to. These people aren't driving 15 miles to deliver a pizza.

The pizza shop I'm most familiar with: if the driver uses the restaurant's car (preferred by the restaurant for insurance reasons) then the restaurant gets the delivery fee; driver keeps the tip, and driver is paid the same rate as the guys inside. i.e. the delivery guy gets to take a ride in an air conditioned car while everyone inside busts their asses, making the same pay, and gets to keep any tips.

If a person takes their own car, they keep the entire $2 delivery charge. I don't know about some of you, but it costs more than you think to deliver. Gas isn't the only cost to driving a vehicle, there's a lot of maintenance. And city miles are a lot meaner on cars than highway miles.

The $2 per delivery charge was pretty simple to calculate for the restaurant: the owner is really picky about some things (and not picky about other things), and kept really good records on the deliveries. He took the cost of a vehicle & all the expenses over 5 years (gas, oil changes, other maintenance, insurance), and divided by the number of deliveries over those 5 years. And, in order to get a decent rate on insurance, all the drivers have to be at least 25 years old; high school students do not get hired to deliver. $2 per delivery was pretty close to the actual costs. (It was actually a little above $2) And, of course, they don't charge a delivery fee on large orders.
