if you havent fixed it..... try playing aroudn with turning acpi on and off in your bios settings.

sometimes 3rd party sofrware are better than microsoft crap. you need to upgarde your codecs for .dat files to work or as someone suggested use xing player or vcd player. codecs are 3rd party btw under your definition :)
