How come the WMP that came with Win2K can't play VCD .dat files?

because WMP doesn't support .dat files.

I believe the Xing mpeg player should be able to help you.

Thanks but I really don't want to use a 3rd party program. Is there a file that I can download that'll "upgrade" my current default WMP 6.4 in Win2K that will enable it to recognize .dat files? How do I upgrade to mpeg4 codec?

I think you really should check out the link I provided since I am no where near an expert on vcd.

I know WMP 6.4 plays it tho'

here is something I got off that site that might help you:

In order to play VideoCD's on a PC (or even copy the dat files from a VideoCD in the CDROM drive to the PC's disk) you have to have the virtual device driver SCSI1HLP.VXD in Window's \SYSTEM\IOSUBSYS directory; otherwise, the file structure will not be recognized by Windows. My file was there but some program had changed it's extension. After renaming and rebooting, my VideoCD's now run without a hitch.

Again, check it out...there's tons of info on that site.

good luck.

How come everytime I try to copy a file from my cd-rom to my HD, I get the error message "I/O device error." Thanks man, I was browsing through the site and I guess the only way to play them is to get a 3rd party software. *sigh* Anyway, thanks for all the help man.

sometimes 3rd party sofrware are better than microsoft crap. you need to upgarde your codecs for .dat files to work or as someone suggested use xing player or vcd player. codecs are 3rd party btw under your definition :)

EASy just drag the file into the wmp window..

ie open WMP

then drag teh file you want to play inside of it, it will pay automatically....asuming that you want to watch a vcd!!
