I bought my computer over 2 years ago. It's an AMD K6-3 450 w/ an EPOX EP-MVP3G2 mobo. It came with a generic HSF. About 8 months ago the processor began overheating (the alarm kept going off). It was getting hotter than 60 degrees celcius. I figured the generic HSF was dying, so, I went out and bought a Golden Orb for $20.

While installing it, I tightened it on too tight, and one of the bottom plastic clips on the processor socket broke off. Sh!t! :| So, I was forced to use a clip to the right of the broken one. This caused the Golden Orb to be on a slight angle, but hey, at least it was tight and flush with the processor. I monitored the processor temp. and it stayed at around 41 degrees. This was good. :)

Yesterday I bought a new AOPEN 40x20x10 CD burner. While installing it, I must have bumped the Golden Orb, because I started to get BSOD when burning CDs, and finally my processor alarm went off. The temp. was back up at 61 degrees. So, I tried tightening the Golden Orb onto my processor again, but being the excessive moron I am, I tightened it too tight and broke off the second plastic clip on the bottom of the processor socket. Fvck! :| Now, I have 2 plastic clips on the top of the socket and 2 BROKEN plastic clips on the bottom. I tried for about an hour last night to get the damn HSF onto the processor, but I had no luck. I even tried to rig a twist tie to hold it on, but that was useless.

Does anyone have any suggestions for what I can do? As far as I know that processor socket is permanently attached to my mobo, so I can't replace it. I REALLY don't want to get a new mobo either. Any ideas of how I can get the HSF to stay on without the use of the 2 bottom clips?

Thanks!

Ouch....I feel your pain...

Can you put some sort of heavy weight on the top, to hold it down?
Do you have any heat goop to help stick the two together?
I've used a rubber band to hold a HS onto a card--but I can't say how much it helped.
Any chance of using the case to apply pressure to the HSF? (not attaching to the mobo, since it'll just bend up)
Any way to mod the socket? Like adding some paperclip (or something) to stick out?
How 'bout trying to attach the HSF with clips (think a paperclip that goes around the top of the HSF (at the edge), and the down around the whole edge of the socket. (The way the fan is attached to the HS here.)

Thanks for the suggestions, Woodie! :)

I like the clips idea. Perhaps I'll try something like that. I can't really think of how to rig an elastic band since the socket is so thin. Perhaps the heavy weight will work, too.

no, here ya go: get yourself some "thermal epoxy." apply it to your processor like you would thermal grease/compound and put your hsf on it. give it a little bit and it will hold very tight and aid in heat transfer too. it'll just be permanent, that's all! :) the two will be one for life...
