OK here is the deal.

System Specs:

1gig T-bird
ECS K7S5A on board LAN
320mb SDRAM
20 gig Maxtor HD
Pioneer 1040s
Iomega CDRW
RCA Cable Modem
On board Sound
Radeon LE w/TV out

Duel Boot Win2k (Main) and Win XP

OK here is what happened. This system has been rock solid for months now. But last night after I burned a bad CD with EZ CD Creator (My fault) I rebooted my system...I thought nothing of it. After everything loaded fine I tried to use my mouse and keyboard and NOTHING. The system booted up fine...but no use of the mouse and keyboard. I tried to boot with last known GOOD configuration and no luck. I tried to boot into safe mode and no luck. I tried to boot into my WinXP OS and I get halfway thru the boot when an error appears regarding my boot files. I tried to repair the Win2k installation but still no joy. I have never seen anything like this before.

What is especially puzzling is that when the splash screen for my Win2k installation appears everything is loaded fine. The keyboard and mouse light up when Win2k loads the appropriate drivers etc. I am amazed and confused but not yet pissed!!

Could I have a virus in my system?

Anyone out there have this same experiance?

I don't want to have to do a reformat but I keep my OS relatively clean (i.e. I won't lose to much data, only some mp3s) so it wouldn't break my heart if I had to. But if anyone can give me some pointers I would appreciate it. Thanks. :)

That is strange. I'm not surprised that EZ CD Creator is to blame, though. It has done some weird shi!t to me before ;)

I think you've tried everything possible. Did you have a Win2k ERD? Or did you just try a manual repair? Have you tried to fix the MBR? I find it strange that WinXP won't even load anymore, because it sounds like the problem you're having should only affect Win2k.

sounds like bad luck. how old is themouse/keyboard? do you think they may have just went out? And when you boot it reconizes them right? It sees the keyboard and mouse and what not...... right?

They may have just died...

yes i came across this problem with ezcd before. i beilve uness you are using the latest version of ezcd you will have this prob because i had it repetadly. what i did was i used last known good config and booted into windows because it wodul not let me boot normally. i used my keybaprd to navigate to add or remove programs and deleted that pos ezcd :) and then everthing came back to normal.

The more I look into it the more I should just reformat. But don't you hate it when you have the OS setup just the way you like it and something like this comes along!?!?

Anyway to answer some questions. No ERD I tried to repair Manually. Does that even work? When I tried both times it just checks the C drive and then reboots the system which did nothing for me. Am I doing that wrong?

I haven't tried to fix the Master Boot Record. I am afraid to (bad experiance in the past  )

The mouse and keyboard checked out in another system...so I know it isn't those pieces.

I find it interesting that sairam71 had the same problem but was able to reboot using the Last known config option. That wouldn't even work for me.......

Thanks for the replies guys...I feel a reformat job coming for this weekend.
:disgust:

*mental note* never install EZ CD again...

ummm, dont think you mentioned it, but have you tried just unplugging/plugging the keybiard/mouse? I sometimes get this same problem(after a bad restart) and that usually solves my problem

hope you have reformmated yet :)

Good Luck

to redo your mbr you need to execute "fdisk /mbr"...simple enough...

i hope you can use your keyboard at the dos prompt...otherwise bootdisk ->autoexec.bat->fdisk.........

good luck with the problem, but i doubt it's the mbr honestly :)
