you should check out dpreview.com. their forum for 300d is very active. they discuss lens everyday. I would suggest you keeping the 18-55 lens, get a zoom for long end, like a quality 70-200 4/L or a cheap 75-300, and also get a prime like 50mm 1.8, which is a must have for most 300d user.

yes, u can do that. but the picture quality sucks compared to commercial products. There is too much light leak in the light path. I honestly think a lot of people would be disappointed after they did what's suggested in the article.
