Even if this were true, why should we be eager to deport people who have lived in our country for 10-20 years as law-abiding citizens? If these people were criminals, or perpetually lived off the system, I would agree that deportation would be the correct choice. But from all accounts, that is not the case. ultimately, enforcement of any law comes down to resources. so, is this a good allocation of resources? the answer is no.

a much more effective way to deter illegal immigration would be to target companies that employ illegal immigrants and therefore incentivize illegal immigration. root cause, correction action, and all that. following that, you could invest in central/south american countries to promote healthier domestic economies, further removing the incentive to illegally immigrate to the US. cherry on the top? legalize and control "hard" drugs. the amount of crime you'd remove - including all its ancillary costs - and the economy generated from these actions - would be - as Trump is so fond of saying - tremendous.
