THe Si is a much better looking car though it's not quite as fast-I think if those two were my only choice that I'd choose it.

SI

Rogo

Are we looking at something we commute in everyday? Or are we looking at a weekend ski trip get away car?

At that price range, I would look at some used sport cars....you know...the one with RWD.

If you drive manual...SI

If you drive automatic....GTi with DSG is amazing

Thats a simplest I can put it

OP said that he perfers an auto because of Los Angeles traffic and the DSG fits the bill.

I think this is good advice. I'll probably go for the GTI, but my friends are telling me to consider the Si, because the parts for it are much cheaper (aftermarket parts). The only reason I would buy an Si is because it is more reliable. But then again, I'm only going to put around 10-12,000 miles a year on it anyways, so I don't think reliability will be an issue for the life the car has with me. Plus, I could use the practicality of a bigger hatch. Some people I talked to said, "It's a fast car (the GTI), but isn't it like a small minivan?" I guess the style's more popular in Europe than here, huh? 😛

Maintenence and upkeep will be more on the VW.

How long do you plan to keep the car? If the answer is as long as possible, then Honda. Look at any set of statistics or talk to an unbiased person, purely from numbers and experiences, you have a much better chance of reliability and lower maintenence costs from a Honda than you do from VW. If people say that this new model is very reliable, how long have they used it for? A year? two? three? That doesn't say much if you'll be keeping it for 10+ years. My accord has thankfully done very well, clutch wasn't changed till 185k miles and it has been very reliable over the years.

Other than ricers who get 6 foot wings and such, the Honda folks, like any group of car enthusiasts, are good at what they do. For any brand you buy, there will be tons of DIY guides online, plenty of aftermarket, etc.

My personal recommendation - decide how long you want to keep it, pull up numbers on reliability and maintenence costs, and then decide. This assume that you like both cars. If you don't like one, well, then the other is your choice unless you want to look at more choices.

I plan on keeping it for around 5-6 years, which means AT LEAST 50-60,000 miles. That doesn't sound too bad, I guess. I heard VW's start to become a money pit after 90,000.

Something interesting to note - from the people I know, I've found many more people switch away from VW to Toyota/Honda/Subaru/Mazda than I have the other way around. This trend might tell you something, and yes, I'm prepared to be bashed by the VW guys. Just look at statistics, they've been posted in the past and I've dug them up before, but don't have the time or desire to do it, they're out there on google, just have to look around a little.

Edit: I should clarify... I'm not saying that all VW's are bad, not by any means. I'm simply stating the trends I've seen and in my other posts, that maintenence/upkeep will be less on a Honda than a VW.

i would probably actually buy the civic just because its much more reliable. probably cheaper too. but the gti is hot. looks hot, and with dsg would be easy to drive and commute in. of course in 3 years it'll be falling apart and costing hundreds in repairs...

Considered it, even did a couple of hours of research. The bottom line is that while the Si might be a better track car because of it's LSD, it has to rev to a ridiculous amount of RPM to get any torque out of it at all, where as the GTI is torquey even at a low 1800 RPM. Still considering both, though.

but remember while it does has a high redline, while at WOT you will never even use those low RPM's since it's geared to stay in the higher RPM's

But the VTEC kicks in at 6250 RPM, which is a ridiculous amount for daily driving. For normal shifting, MT drivers usually shift at 4-5k RPM. If you haven't voted/expressed your opinion yet, do it now! 😀

every car is different, some cars might have to shift higher or lower, me personally I shift at 3k cus I have enough torque to keep up with traffic at those rpm's and not use much gas

I know. I was just criticizing the Si's narrow power band.

I'm going to guess SRT + 3R + extra toys + spray?

Nah... he's sending me a list of parts he is ordering (he's in the Navy, gets out in august. I get to play w/ his toy til he gets back). It is a custom set, lemmie see if I can find the links. No spray though 😛

EDIT: And yes, FTWheelspin. Off the line, she's gonna be a beast, but once moving, invincible.

Here's the list of parts he has ordered (not the turbo yet, that comes in 3 weeks).

Ultimate Racing SRT-4 Upper Intercooler Cold Side Pipe Kit

HKS Blow off Valve(1421-SA001)

Walbro High Flow Fuel Pump SRT-4

AGP SRT-4 Fuel Return Line Kit

FIC SRT4 750cc Injectors with Spacers & Plugs

AEM UEGO Wide Band o2 Gauge : 30-4100

Apexi S-AFC NEO Fuel Controller

Prothane Race Motor Mount Inserts Dodge Turbo

HKS EVC Turbo Boost Controller

AGP SRT-4 T3/T04 Turbocharger Upgrade Kit + 50 trim turbo

Soon to come: upgraded clutch kit (before it is driven 😛)

And after all that money it will be a riced out Dodge Neon. Maybe fast but still a Neon. I owned one before so I have the right to complain about them.

scion tC (owner so i have to say it)

since the base price is <17K you can easily put a Turbo and any other mods you want for the base price of those other cars

Well then why doesnt everybody get an 89 civic and build that up??? Not everyone wants to have to mod their slow car to be fast.

The handling is  compared to any other decent sport compact, though.

Nah, taking steps to de-rice. No more wing ftw. And the LSD + better suspension (H beam and roll bars up front) ftw!
