I found a decent picture of a GTI-I didn't like how it felt, nor how it looks-I don't understand the screwed up auto aesthetics that you have.

I've always found it ugly.

MkV GTI vs. Civic Si? Puh-leaaaaase, the GTI wins hands down. The interior on the Civic is trash (I can't stand the gauge panel) and the 2.0T in the GTI spanks the Civic's silly engine. Sure, the Civic's got an 8k redline, and you've got to keep the engine there to get some useful torque! The DSG in the GTI is awesome enough. I love the GTI, wanted to get one, but got a really good deal on an 07 Altima. Oh well :(

The GTI is in the lead of the hot hatch battle! I test drove the Si, and realize I suck at manual and will get whipped on the track. Also, the "angry" red dashboard seemed like it would get annoying. Then I drove the GTI, with DSG, holy ******! :Q Manual performance with automatic convenience! Ive never seen shifts that fast! :Q And the launch control, interior, and practicality (bigger trunk) looked very appealing. Also, dropping a $600 APR chip into it will give you +52hp and +82lb/ft of torque!:heart:

between those two: if i'm going to drive an impractical small sports car, i'm sure as hell not going to compromise on the sports aspect. so it's the Civic Si, all the way. if i want a compromise car, i'll get an Accord V6 for roughly the same dough as the GTI, and blow away both hatches while riding in comfort. i just can't think of any situation in which the GTI would be the right car for somebody.

Thomsbrain, I'm sure the GTI would take the Si around the track, especially chipped. The Si is even smaller than the GTI in terms of headroom and trunk space. Also, my dad is about to buy a V6 Accord. Heh, I'm not that old yet to be shopping for a family car. :p

In all honesty, I would look into something that had 4 doors and has pretty good performance because I always thought that I would never need the 4-doors but it always comes in handy. Seriously at least give the Mazdaspeed 3 a look over if you are considering these two cars.

Does it have much in the way of a decent auto transmission? I mean, I'm ok with driving a MT, but the DSG is just too good to pass up, especially living in Los Angeles's suburbs ("405 freeway" pretty much sums it up).

EDIT: Those giant rear pillars on it look like they would be annoying (not much rear visibility). The numbers though, holy sh1t! Edmunds said, "STi speed, WRX price." 0-60 in 5.9 is not bad at all. Anyways, edmunds criticized it for it's second rate suspension and clutch, any opinions?

Well I live in Los Angeles too and traffic with manual transmission is really not that bad because the more you drive it, the more automatic it will be. You will not even realize you shift and your left foot will obviously get stronger the more you use it. DSG is grea IMO but I love shifting and it's something I hope they never get rid of because it is fun and gives you a better feel for the car. The clutch on the MS3 is not that good because I test drove a MS6 and everyone says it is the same thing so AFAIK it sucks.

Something you did not say is if you plan on modding the car at all. Do you want to keep it bone stock or do you want to make it more fun? These are options you should take into account. Parts for a Civic are cheaper than parts for a GTI but turbos are easier to get more power from but if you break something, it will be more expensive to replace than on a Civic.

In either case, I would look into the 4-door version of each one. Those extra doors are great.

The Civic does handle better than the GTI and that LSD on the Civic is great for cornering but the fit and finish and the torque are immensly better with the GTI.

Yeah, if I was going to get a GTI I was going to drop a $600 APR ECU chip in it, which gives it +52 HP and +82 lb/ft of torque, making it run 0-60 in under 6 seconds (as fast as the MS3). I know LSD is a great feature, but I think a GTI chipped would be a serious beast, and would run laps around the Cvic Si.

There you go. You pretty much made up your mind and it is a better car that is nicer plus I think the SI is ugly.

umm have you ever heard of honda??? there are a million more mods for a civic than prolly every new vw put together. it is cheaper to mod a civic and there are more parts out there for them.

you choose..........im sure someone will throw in the MS3 in here at some time which would be in the same category as these cars

I hope you're not an idiot, but in case you are. The idea behind modding for performance is to increase the power/output and thus increase speed. Now both cars are built around the same device, the gasoline engine. I don't think either really have an advantage as far as modding goes, with enough money anything is possible. I personally would take the GTi, but I hate those mini engines.

Did you just hear what you said? Hear the engine scream? What? It's not even 2 litres of displacement, it's 1.99800. I can drink more liquid in terms of volume in a sitting than the engine has. It's not screaming at all, it's crying in a high pitched whine because it doesn't like you beating on it, or bogging it down with your bodyweight.

8,000 RPMs? Oooooooo, my Dremel has 22,000 RPMs. Hearing it scream while I take the cutting wheel to something is amazing.

Indeed, give me the tone of a 69 GTO ANY DAY.

MAZDA... SPEED... 3!!!

the aftermarket is starting to fire up for the speed 3... (and the 6, which makes me :))... there's a company working on an aftermarket turbo good for up to 450awhp (on the speed6) that matches up to the stock manifold... no, you don't bolt up and get 450awhp, but prelim testing had it at ~360awhp untuned iirc... AND it pulls to redline... which is :D :D

Ehh, the styling is kind of off, the rear visibility is not that great, and the clutch and suspension are second to the GTI and Si. Also, a chipped GTI will give you MS3 performance and GTI handling. That 360 HP, though... :Drool;:p

lol, wtf are you talking about?

if you like the GTi, that's one thing, but trying to insult a car based on displacement is one of the most stupid ways to compare cars.

You're now comparing a handheld tool to a car... if I was talking about RPM's alone, I'd be holding the rotary engine on a pedestal.

You sure you would? What about warranty issues? With a VW and based on frickin statistics, you will definitely have to take it in for many issues.

Why the hell would you mention that in a thread like this? Showing people you like muscle cars and are above those who drive Civics? Congrats, you've impressed ATOT.
