California, as an example, just costs a buttload more to live in, compared to somewhere like Idaho. States have the freedom to set it above the federal level, which even at $10 represents and eroding purchasing power. Ideally it would float with at least CPI but even that probably doesn’t reflect an accurate basket for the people most likely to be getting minimum wage.

OTOH, I also acknowledge human behavior and how UBI would affect their lives. If you give people free money, good luck weaning them off. Imagine a 32 year old on UBI for a few years. Hasn't worked in years. Do you really think that he, or she will just get up and go get a job? Historically our fairly generous bankruptcy code (compared to how bankruptcy was traditionally handled in countries like England) is credited with giving Americans more entrepreneurial freedom than most other countries. Give Americans more opportunity and lets see what we can do with it.

Lets take Washington state, it has the second highest minimum wage in the nation ($13.69 an hour for everyone, regardless of the size of the company, which is only $.31 below California, and tip credit is illegal in Washington (IE paying servers $2.85 to $3.35 an hour) It sits right next to Idaho, which is a federal minimum wage state and has tip credit. Washington's minimum wage is 89% higher than Idaho's minimum wage, yet the cost of living in Washington is only 18% higher. Many of the day to day expenses are only pennies different between the states., with some being more expensive in Idaho than Washington. The majority of people in Idaho can't even afford or qualify to buy a house, much less survive. That's why many on the boarders work in Washington. And guess what.. California and Washington state's cost of living are pretty similar now days outside of taxes (CA has a state income tax, Washington does not, and CA has a higher sales tax) and housing.

Yeah no shit commodity prices are up since buying physical goods is about the only thing much of the county felt safe doing. Home prices are up because a lot of people aren't trying to sell their homes during a pandemic.
