I'm just in awe of the formality of it all...

You can't just live your life? It requires an announcement? Seriously... if you leave a church, what can they do? There's no mormon army.

These things blow my mind. One more reason not to live in the states... y'all are crazy.

As I stated earlier, we were willing to put up with it while I worked for the local bishop. Obviously had we sent out the letter then, he would have immediately been informed and I didn't want to risk losing the work.

And as for the last year, we've simply been too lazy to send off the letter. Nothing more.

so the church is so dangerous that you have to save her and get her "free" yet you let her stay in such a bad situation for a job?

If you simply stop attending church, you're marked as "inactive" in the church records. This makes them make more effort to reach out to you to bring you back into the fold.

Per law, if a person tells a church authority they are no longer a member of a church then that's it -- you're no longer a member. The missionaries or visiting teachers knocking on our doors don't qualify as "church authority" so simply telling them we're not members doesn't do anything.

I agree, it's pretty ridiculous one even needs to go to such formal lengths to leave a religion, but Mormonism is, by definition, a cult. It's not your run of the mill church in which if you just stop showing up you're likely not to hear from them again.

Mormonism demands 10% of your gross income in tithing. It's in their financial interests to keep you as an active, tithing member.

"Dangerous?" No, try "annoying."

Again, I use the term "free" to simply convey that we don't have to deal with dipshits knocking on our door, calling, or sending letters trying to convince my wife to come to church again.

In an ecclesiastical sense, it's as liberating as putting ourselves on the "Do Not Call" list.

This weekend she got the confirmation letter in the mail. She hasn't considered herself a member of the church for many years but it's nice to make it official and to be rid of the missionaries and visiting teachers knocking on our door.

Another in a long line of threads where I have to ask what the OP was thinking (if they were at all) when they posted this. Why would you ever think that posting something like this in a public forum was a good idea? What gave you any indication that anyone would care to know this? This is a private issue that is best kept PRIVATE.

I'm simply sharing something that's happened to me in the interest of sparking discussion the same as when someone posts that they got a new job or that they've remodeled their kitchen.

If you don't feel like participating in the discussion then go away.

You have joined a select group of what I like to call "Internet fools" who don't have a "filter" to know when to stop. I try my best to keep my private life ... PRIVATE. You (and the rest of the "fools" feel (for some bizarre reason) that it is necessary to post any/all personal information on the Internet. Why? Why would you want to do this? Who would care or want to know this? Does it make yourself feel better to air your (and your wife's) VERY personal information for THOUSANDS OF TOTAL STRANGERS to see?

Since your vehement and passionate responses indicate to me that you have a horse in this religious race, I can only conclude you find the sharing of this information distasteful.

You know what -- leaving a phony and made up cult is no more private than canceling a Netflix subscription. The sad thing is, canceling Netflix is FAR easier.

Do us all a favor and keep your misdirected and pent up anger to yourself. Better yet, sit down with your pastor and discuss it if it bothers you so much.
 
lol. Let me start it off by saying I do believe in God but distance myself from organized religion because I've found that most involved in organized religion are complete liars, frauds, molesters, etc...

I'm just wondering where you were when your wife decided to join this group of nutjobs?

Yes, her family is Mormon. She was born into it.

She was never a serious Mormon, but was still indoctrinated. It took a while for her to completely let it go.

I find it interesting as hell, thanks for the post CoW, I had no idea Mormons didn't take Benadryl or that it was so difficult to leave the church.

Interesting post CoW, I've seen that the Mormon church is far more aggressive than the other major christian sects when it comes to holding onto its membership.

Good on you for handling the issue formally in writing. Do you live in an area with a high percentage of Mormons?
 
People in this thread remind me of Mel Gibson in Braveheart. "Freeeeedommm!" Like church is somehow mandatory, and you are somehow now liberated.

Most churches like you to send a letter so you can get off their mailing lists. Just like any organization, they like to have a membership list. You go, you sign to get on, you leave, you sign to get off the list. Of course they might want to talk to you. Big deal. Tell them you have no interest in being a member and send them on their way.

I love how you guys avoided not talking to the dudes because you feared what exactly?

No higher than most other areas outside of Utah. However, that doesn't stop them from being tenacious.

As I said, up until a year ago I did computer work for a company owned by the local Mormon bishop. Not wanting to risk losing that extra source of income, we put off sending the letter to rescind her membership until losing that extra income no longer mattered. We were willing to put up with the annoyance until then.

Once we moved away, we still got about 4 visits from missionaries, a few letters, and phone calls. Finally a month ago we decided to stop putting it off and send the letter.

Use of the word "freedom" and "liberated" isn't to seriously imply we felt trapped or imprisoned. Just that it feels good to not have to deal with it anymore.

he feared getting fired. so staying in the church was good enough long as they were paying his bills. but when done they finally say she wants out.

The church didn't pay any of my bills. I was doing some IT work for a business owned by the bishop.
