Additionally, privatizing the school system would force cheap and/or poor families to send their children to the crappiest of the crap schools....

By the way, I recall reading that there are more educational bureaucrats in NYC than there are in Western Europe.

Is there anyone here in education that can verify that?

If true, it highlights the incredible waste in our public school system.

Bad analogy.

The bigger issue is why do we have public education at all. Privatization would provide a lot more choices.

You are for choice and freedom, aren't you?

i imagine we have public education to provide an equal opportunity for children to receive an education if their parents can't afford a private education.

and isn't it ironic to support choice and freedom in the same thread you wish to prevent it with school uniforms?

If we weren't taxed to death, more parents could afford public education. Also, people would have more discretionary income to be philanthropic and help those in need.

Given our current system (which I obviously oppose), I don't think my position is ironic at all.
Right. Giving a family bringing in $25,000 per year a 10% tax break will give them more than enough money to shell out $1000+ per month for private school and the requisite uniforms.

Oh wait.....no it won't.
rolleye.gif

Where do you get $1,000+ month?

I'm not paying anywhere need that and there are choices that are a lot cheaper than where I am sending my kids.
Define "cheaper". How much are these schools you're referring to?

How many kids and what grade? around here private high school tuition easily runs around 7,500 per year
per kid,not counting books, uniforms and the collection envelope and hours of time the parents must work at functions like bingo.

I don't think private schools should be funded by taxes at all and I sent 2 of my 3 boys to a private High School.

I'm spending about $7200/yr for two kids. There are schools in my area that are 1/2 this.

I don't know exactly what it costs to educate a public school student in my area but I'm guessing it's $8,000 - $9,000/student.

Plus, my kids are getting a much better, more well-rounded education.

where are you in NY? school district-wise?

Greece school district.

Are your opinions based on your school district's public system? Is that Greece-Athena high school? Rochester area? I went to high school just outside of Syracuse (Liverpool) and maybe I'm just fortunate, but our public school system is excellent. I could never imagine going to a private school.

I guarantee you my education was just as good as the one your kid's are getting and I wore t-shirts and jeans to school. Your much better, well-rounded education comments are bias.

So, the big proponent of public education sends his kids to private schools! Talk about ironic!

Public education is good enough for everyone else, but not your kids?

My comments are not biased at all. The public schools in my area are lilly white. The city-Catholic school where I send my kids has about 40% minorities with students from a range of economic backgrounds.

I believe that an educational environment which has diversity plus provides religious and moral instruction leads to a more well rounded education.

They wanted to go because they wanted a Christian Education. Even though I'm an atheist who am I to deny them that if their Grandmother was willing to foot the bill?:D BTW, one of them become an Ordained Minister this summer (After his Mission in Indonesia is completed)

BTW, they didn't have to wear a uniform though they had a dress code.

Good for them. Are there any safety issues in Indonesia?

So when are you going cross over from the dark side?

hahaha....what you BELIEVE....nope, that's not bias at all

now you are saying that religious instruction makes for a better education. your bias opinion. show me where taking religion classes (which I did all the way from elementary through high school at my church) betters a student's ability to learn math, science, etc. I guess I should wear a uniform also while I'm at it.

so what defines "looking like a slob"? jeans and a tshirt? ripped/shredded clothes? or is any instance where each kid doesn't look like the next an example of them not caring and being slobs?

For the record: the jury is still out as to whether uniforms offer any benefit to the students.

Listing of major studies (whose results are conflicting).

Conclusion

Many educators and researchers point out that, though there may be declines in school violence and improvements in academic performance, it is difficult to attribute such results to dress codes or uniform policies. Other reforms are often enacted at the same time that dress codes or uniform policies are implemented. ?Because no long-term empirical studies have been conducted to assess the effectiveness of school uniforms or specific dress codes, the results remain anecdotal and unproven? (Morris and Wells 2000).

Almost everyone, however, agrees that more studies are needed.

I would be more concerned with the parents that send their kids to wait for the bus in the winter without a coat on. Or parents who send their kids to school without shoes. Or parents who let their daughters go to school dressed like they are going to a frat party...

What do these threads have to do with being an ultra conservative?

Like Red Dawn, I don't think my beliefs fit neatly under any labels.
