Why are some people so obsessed with their heritage?

Why do some white people say the "immigrants" should go back "home" to the country they came from? Obviously white people themselves are descendants of immigrants, but they feel as if they apparently aren't immigrants anymore, likely due to the many generations of living in the U.S. The "immigrants" that these white people refer to are mainly 1st & 2nd generation people living in the U.S., and therefore still have stronger ties to the country they were from.

Ask this question again in 100 years.

I think it's because they're illegal. I do believe that if you come to America, you should go through the process, not jump the border.

I welcome anyone to come to America, so as long as you go through the proper procedures.

I highly doubt it's solely because of that, since the "illegal" comment would be directed towards one specific demographic, but the immigrant comment tends to be directed towards multiple ethnicities, many of whom don't have the "illegal" stereotype.

OP, are you saying that white people do not shoe pride in their culture or heritage? It may not be the heritage of their great ancestors from Europe, but surely the majority of white people take pride in their culture whether it be the hillbilly lifestlye or a life of excess or whatever else.

Yes they may take pride in their current lifestyle, but most do not take pride in or care about their ancestral background. Big difference.

You can choose your lifestyle, and then be proud of it.

But you don't choose your ethnicity, which is why I don't understand why someone would be proud of it.

Firstly I dont really understand why you cant be proud of something if it was not your choice. Most people are born into a religion and continue to take pride in it their entire life, though they did not make the intial choice of religion. They did though have the choice to change religions. With culture, people do have the choice of taking pride in their culture or succumbing to American culture or whatever. They may have been born into it, but they make the choice to continue to follow the customs and culture. Secondly, for most minorities their heritage is not of their ancestors but rather their parents or their grandparents. With the exception of most African Americans.

The history of the peoples has alot to do with it. Look at how the hispanics turned-out to support illegal immigration. You would never see whitey doing that.

I highly doubt I'm wrong.

Most people protesting against the illegal immigrants are just against "illegal" immigration, not immigration in general.

But some are opposed to all immigration, but they are a very small minority and most of them are the "KKK" types.

Because you didn't earn it.

You cannot be proud of something you did not earn or help create yourself.

Well then, let me step back a bit - why do you think some white people don't consider themselves immigrants? Are they in denial, unaware or history or what? They don't need to be obsessed with their heritage, but they should know enough that their ancestors weren't born in the U.S.

When my ancestors came over here there were no "proper procedures". You got inspected for lice and cholera and that was about it. No quotas, no visas, nothing. Comparing "legal" immigration requirements from the 19th century when most immigrants were europeans to the modern system is apples to oranges. For a poor Mexican it is just about impossible to immigrate to the U.S. legally. The hurdles are too high and the process too complicated.

Except white people.

Note: I'm speaking about minorities who were born and raised in America.

Why do so many minorities take so much pride in some culture and country they're not really a part of?

Perfect Example: African Americans often refer to Africa as the "mother land." But most have never been to Africa or even know what it's like. Many are also into "dashikis" (colorful robes) and those cylinder shaped hats.

Many Hispanics and Asians also are quite enthralled with their backgrounds.

I'm white and mostly German. In fact I'm a descendant of one of Germany's most famous politicians (no, not Hitler), but I don't care much about German culture or care really. If I traveled to Germany, I wouldn't be like, "Oh, I'm back in my homeland."

I don't sit arounding drinking warm beer and eating sausage.

Why do so many minorities feel the need to drown themselves in their ethnic backgrounds?

Please note, I'm not saying it's a bad thing, I'm just curious to know. Why be so proud of something you were born into?

Sense of pride perhaps?Uniqueness?
Just like one loves his/her country. Its only natural.

Yes I read other books but I find them intellectually weak.

That is such an awesome answer, I don't even know what to say.

Do you really believe that or is it propaganda for the masses? Go look at the INS website and lookup 'H visa'. Then go look at how many visas were given to Mexican nationals compared to other nationals (hint: they top the list). Impossible my ass.

Dude..your argument is definitely going palces....

And you don't generalize people and groups you've never met?

Is that a feeble attempt at jsutification?😕

<---kind, respectful person who stays away from stereotypes and generalization. I am not perfect mind you, but I try my best.

I don't give a fvck about my past in all honesty...I appreciate every PRESENT moment I have too much to care for whats already been done.

I am the first generation of Asian American. I didn't born in the US.

I consider myself an American. I wouldn't run around with a straw hat or wave foreign flags.

Some folks are just take things too far. I am straight but you won't see me running around and screaming..."Yeah, I am straigh, Yeah yeah, deal with it".... There are other more important things to do in life.

You do it, everyone does it, it is absolutely stupid not to.

You do not need to know every person of a certain category in order to get an accurate guage on their traits.
