May I ask why?

I grew up western wayne and moved on to ann arbor/ypsi for high school. (parents were brought up in brightmoor, which I understand is completely gone now) Even in that area I ran screaming for the jobs that just didn't exist. Noone in my family remains there.

Going out on a limb and saying that I might just be 18 and living at home. Maybe.

Interesting note though, when I started middle school, there was like 1 black kid a class. Now there's like 4.

Smoking needs to be made illegal.

I would be insanely happy if that happened.

I second.

What are the smokers going to do when they can't get smokes anymore?

Its not like booze anymore. Are they going to weakly protest with yellow fingers and harsh throats and not enough breath to wheeze out a yell?

Within 3 days they'll be off the juice and the world will be a better place.

Smoking is for the Chinese.....

I'm white, but yes I live in SE Michigan.

Yeah me too.. was joking about the brothaz thing. I came from the center of the mitten. (think Ithaca, Alma, St. Louis, Mt. Pleasant areas..) Never really went anywhere else before I moved out of Michigan so I havn't seen much of it. I'm considering moving back if a job here doesn't pull through. Are you more South than Detroit? Is it all farmland down their if so? Is it nicer near the lakes? Just curious, if you don't mind.

Not trying to rag on you or anything. Just honestly curious. I was under the impression that most of that area on the USA side of the river in that part of the world was just a burning hulk anymore. I hope you survive the OCP takeover.

Yeah, I live in Newport, Lake Erie is like uhh, down the street. Lol. Like less than 2 miles. It's semi-Rural. Most of my Dad's family are farmers except his brother and my dad.

It's pretty nice I'd say, except the shitty roads.

It's terrible job-wise. I think we're like 15%+ unemployment.

Yes! We have now official hi-jacked the troll thread and turned it about Michigan.

The only reason I'm considering going back is because my dad is there, he can help me out and I am considering going to CMU. Then I'll probably be getting my ass back out of there.

Anyways, carry on people.

I know a couple people that go to CMU.

We need to continue the hijack.

Well I started smoking and turned very rude when I was like 12 in redford. The trend continued into Westland (I just realized my freaking city where I went to high school was named after a damn mall) - and even Ypsi and A2. I did a lot of smoking there. Fuck smoking.

Stop hanging around asshole people?

Most of the smokers I know of are actually quite pleasant and ask if it is ok to smoke. Hell, they even ask when I'm in their home/car if I mind before they do. I haven't met the stereotypical asshole smoker in years.

Actually, its the rabid anti-smoking people who are complete assholes these days. I've seen people call someone who was smoking a murderer and all sorts of other crazy shit.

As for public places. Most people don't seem to understand what constitutes a public place. A store, business, or bar is not a public place.

^ this :p

You know instead of talking about something you know nothing of, proving to everybody how much of an idiot you are, why don't you just shut the fuck up.

I know, your mama would be proud if she read your post but were not you parents so screw off.

ROFL at the smokers who don't need to use lungs to type. The your mama part doesn't even make sense there, eh?

How exactly don't I know about smoking, quitting, and how the world is a better place without smokers/smoking?

Lots of Chinese people smoke. Are you a Communist?

Seriously though. What effect would insta-banning smoking have? Lets not discuss that it wouldn't happen, or that there is a huge lobby preventing it, or thousands of jobs and evil tobacco companies involved, and peoples liberty as well. But lets say it wasn't illegal to possess it, but that we taxed the everloving fuck out of the producers. Like make it $90 a pack tax.

People would be pissed and angry, some folks would figure out how to grow or import it and make some money off of it, but the price would be so freakin high (I would imagine). It's not like pot where you can grow it in your garage and make enough to stay high for a couple months.

You need acreage. 20-30grams a day every day.

So people would quit right? How can that be bad?

Can someone come up with a single redeeming quality cigarette smoking has for society? And don't say "it relaxes me" or "its how I deal with stress" - cuz I'll come back with the physiological reason for that - and how it is your addiction causing it to begin with.

I'm stepping off my soapbox. This is rapidly spiralling out of control into politics.

but we all know SOMEONE that says 'well, when cigarettes are xx per pack I'll quit', never happens.

or how about the fact that A) usually the people who can least afford to smoke are many times the ones that do? B) that many people will give up something else in their life (usually almost always less harmful) so they can still afford their cancer sticks?

The illegal drug trade hasn't done enough damage to our society. We should be illegalizing more substances and making criminals out of roughly a third of the population.

Banning smoking would make illegal marijuana trade and the resulting gang warfare and social problems look like a drop in the fucking bucket. Think about this for a second.

Your version involves a cultural respect; smoking is a personal thing, not a cultural thing. Apples to oranges.

I also never make a comment to the smokers I have to sit next to in meetings, so I'm letting them live their lives as they see fit. That doesn't make them any more pleasant to sit next to, and my question remains - do they not know or simply not care how bad they smell?

OK, so it's a personal thing. why you trying to cram personal choice down someone?

I understand someone outside of designated smoking zones...but it is rare these days to find an actual smoking zone at airports. I don't see them anymore, only non-smoking signs outside.

I believe he means smokers who light up in his home/property/car without asking.

I don't blame him for being pissed about that. I'm a smoker and I don't even smoke in my own car/house...I certainly won't smoke in someone else's house.
Heck, we have friends/relatives who smoke in their houses and I still go outside to smoke.

Kahleeforneeya banned smoking in workplaces almost 20 years ago, so no more smoking in the grocery store, restaurants, bars, offices, etc. (with very few legal exceptions)

it's sad to see that addiction, when people who can't really afford the necessities of life are hooked so bad they pull food from their children's mouths and let bills go late/unpaid. My Dad went cold turkey back in the 60's when they finally came out and really said 'hey this crap is really bad for you'. Smoked 15 years, never looked back. Wish it was that easy for all those that really WANT to quit.

umm maybe for one our collective health insurance premiums will go down since we won't be subsidizing the declining health of smokers any longer? every little bit helps, eh?

Actually, smokers are a positive influence on health care rates. They pay a lot (more than non-smokers), and die before they can benefit from it.

say wha?

seriously, we have enough problems with this so-called "war on drugs." how stupid do you have to be to think that adding to this would be some sort of good idea?
