If that person were choosing to jump off a cliff, then let them.

It doesn't matter how much you bitch and moan about smoking or how high you pile phone books onto your soapbox to get higher, you're still not minding your own goddamn business.

Smokers made a choice. Fuck off.

Yeah, they made a choice which devastates the lives of those who love them. When someone I love with all my heart is committing slow, painful, expensive suicide right in front of me, it's my business. The one who dies gets out comparatively easy, while everyone else is left behind to mop up and pick up the pieces and live with the pain for decades to come. And that's not even getting into the whole subject of secondhand smoke.

I just lost my beloved mother to lung cancer, and you can still find it in your so-called heart to tell me to fuck off? Wow. I truly pity you, Nik. Even if there were no God, I'd still rather be a Christian than whatever you are. If you'd let a friend jump off a cliff without trying to stop them, you're no friend to them anyway, which is about what I expect out of you.

Out of everybody on ATOT, you really disappoint me, man. All brain and no heart. What a sad way to live. Did I mention that my mom's death (and hospital and hospice care) caused me significant financial trouble? Maybe if I put numbers in the equation, you'll start to understand.

There's no such thing as "I'm only hurting myself". Everyone is loved by someone, and that's what love is- when they hurt, you hurt. Everything we say, do, think, feel, or intend affects other people. Everything. You're so smart, Nik...do you seriously not understand this?

Just goes to show that there are different kinds of smart.

(BTW, I didn't read the whole thread. I know better than to read a dozen-plus-page thread on ATOT. There's an elementary school down the road if I want to listen to children screaming at each other. But I did catch in passing something where you said that smokers mind their own business. Wrong. I've been around smokers all my life, and the last thing most of them do is mind their own business.)

I do understand it. My father died from emphysema, my very dear great aunt lost a lung to smoking, and I've lost three family members in the past 5 years to smoking related illness, including my grandfather, one who I loved and cared about more than anyone else on this planet and you bet your ass I'd tell you to fuck off about my choice.

Life sucks and then you die. Don't like it? Tough. I do what makes me happy and if you have a problem with that, you can fling yourself off a cliff or something. :)

You could make the same statements about someone who dies from eating lots of cheeseburgers, thus dying of heart disease. Similar medical costs, similar heartbreak, same slow, expensive suicide. People are going to die anyway - even if our loved ones don't die by consumption of cheeseburgers and cigarettes, they'll still die. There will still be large medical costs associated with keeping them alive as their bodies fail, and there will still be heartbreak.

The reason cigarettes are legal and, say, crack is not is because cigarettes are just like every other product that people choose to consume; the majority of people over-indulge and hurt themselves by consuming the product, while it is possible to enjoy it in moderation. On the other hand, something like crack (which I use as a comparison because someone in this thread actually compared crack to cigarettes) causes people to steal, murder, and destroy to get more of the drug. Cigarette smokers don't do that - at least none that I've met.

Judge me all you want, you don't have a clue what you're talking about.
