You know, come to think of it this is just a symptom about changing societal views on smoking. With what we now know about the health effects, it isn't hard to see why it is looked down upon by people who do not have a tolerance built up (of which there are more everyday). I think that in the end, smoking will still be acceptable but there will be a proper time and place for it. This is a good thing not only because of the health effects of frequent smoking, but also because people will usually decide to smoke the good stuff when they finally do sit down for some quality tobacco.

I smoke but definitely not a douche about it, I absolutely loathe the non-smokers who act high and mighty to me in public. I work in a mall and 2 days ago I went out for a cigarette (far away from the entrance) and some douche tried to act high and mighty infront of his kids and as he saw me he coughed in his hands and said "it stunts your growth!" and as he said it slipped on a patch of ice and busted his shit. I started cracking up and he continued on his way bright red in the face.

I know that they know that the non smoking people find it repulsive. It seems they could care less and it is their God given right to invade my space with that disgusting habit of yours. Whether it's walking into a store and having smoke blown in your face, lighting up in your car or home, or stinking up work areas with that crap, etc. I don't even like walking by your smelly ass.

You should move to China, or one of the other countless countries in the world where the majority of the population smokes. You sound like a douchenozzle. You'd absolutely love China.

I seriously doubt anyone has blown smoke directly into your face.

Also, if someone is riding with me, I don't give a fuck, they're not smoking in my car. Try to pull out a cigarette and see if I don't throw the whole pack out the window.

Now, if I'm catching a ride from someone else or walking by someone on the street and they pull out a cigarette, then it isn't any of my business. The only thing that annoys me is when I'm standing outside and the wind blows their smoke into my face. Theres a really simple solution to that problem: move upwind of the smoker.

I got off an airplane recently and was standing outside at the curb pickup area. There were no-smoking signs posted about every 10 feet all along the building.

A smoker lit up; I moved upwind to avoid the smoke.

Another smoker lit up on my other side; I again moved upwind.

ANOTHER smoker lit up; moving again would put me too far from the pickup spot I was supposed to meet my ride. Basically no way to get away from the smokers smoking in a no-smoking zone.

I don't have asthma but I can't even imagine what someone in that situation would do.

Same thing happens outside at work often. There's a work shuttle; we all have to stand and wait for it, and the smokers will light up without seeming to give a second thought to standing on the other side of the shuttle waiters, where their smoke would blow the other directions.

In conclusions, I agree - smokers seem to generally be pretty rude.

Obviously all smokers are different but that kind behavior seems pretty standard from what I've observed.
I think you're the first person on Anandtech to acknowledge that. Mostly smokers just get stereotyped here, they're a group that is OK to hate.

I hope none of you who hate on the smokers are fat.

Because there is nothing I hate looking at more than a disgusting fatass who doesnt take care of themselves. They should make laws requiring fat people to stay in their homes. DISGUSTING!

The proper reaction would have been to smash the first smoker in the face with the no smoking sign and then scream "SMOKE 'EM IF YOU GOT 'EM!" to everyone else in the area.

oh snap, i would pay to see someone move around like that. that's awesome man.

It got slightly less awesome for the smokers when I went and got an airport security guard to discuss their violation of the no smoking zone.

Do smokers seriously have no idea how bad they smell? When a smoker comes in direct from a smoking break into a meeting and I have to sit next to them and share a laptop screen to explain something I sometimes have trouble not flat out gagging (especially if they tried to cover the smell with perfume or cologne.)

good for you. I've reported more than a few in various places and each time they were asked to move or put it out. Small victory but Rome wasn't built in a day.

"St. Louis County voters have overwhelmingly approved a measure banning smoking in most public places. " This starts 1/2/2011 I do believe, since we're there at least once a week somewhere that will be awesome. Now to get the enforcement in place.

Do indians seriously have no idea how bad they smell? When an indian comes in direct from a stupid religious ceremony into a meeting and I have to sit next to them and share a laptop screen to explain something I sometimes have trouble not flat out gagging (especially if they tried to cover the smell with perfume or cologne.)

Do you realize how ridiculous this would sound if you just changed a couple of words?

Its their life, let them live it how you see fit. Nobody likes the moral police(wo)man, that is why everyone hates on the religious right.

hehe true, that is a possibility. ive been smoking for over 20 years, have cut way back in an attempt to quit sometime soon. i can still do a 3 mile hike with my kids, as well as spar with my son and nephew for an hour at a time. i think id have a chance against the typical nonsmoker that has a large mouth and not enough sense to keep it shut.

this is all a moot point in my case tho, i dont smoke in the no smoking areas. i also dont smoke around my non smoker friends, even when they tell me "go ahead and light one, i dont care". i just dont feel comfortable smoking in someone elses domain if they dont also smoke.

Your version involves a cultural respect; smoking is a personal thing, not a cultural thing. Apples to oranges.

I also never make a comment to the smokers I have to sit next to in meetings, so I'm letting them live their lives as they see fit. That doesn't make them any more pleasant to sit next to, and my question remains - do they not know or simply not care how bad they smell?

I feel that it is your god-given right to mind your own business, lest you don't mind a swift kick to the balls.

I'm a non-smoker, and You should know that you are completely wrong on this. Most non-smoking nazis are the absolute worst when it comes to cramming your neo-health mumbo jumbo down others' throats, predicated on false science, and with no shred of irony as to how your self-righteousnes is the exact same form of disregard to humanity that you project on others.

Kindly go fuck yourself.

The way I look at it, smokers have the right to smoke, but other people also have the right to clean air. I don't have a problem with people smoking around me, but I can understand how other people feel. They're fine with somebody smoking, as long as it doesn't interfere with them. But as soon as it does, it becomes an issue.

Sitting at a red light with there car in front of you and they are smoking and the AC starts bringing in the smell. Time to turn off the outside vents. At the end of the day I try to grin and bear it. Visited my sister a couple of weeks ago who smokes and we spent a couple of hours talking to her inside her place while she smoked. When the wife and I left our clothers smelled of nasty smoke. When we got home we even had to wash our jackets they smelled so bad.

Funny how you people don't seem to mind the far more damaging auto exhaust fumes syphoned into your lungs as you drive through the city, but a faint wisp of cigarette smoke gets you so riled up, as if it suddenly invaded the private sanctuary of your once un-sullied respiratory system...

give me a break. Do you people even stop to think about the bullshit grievances and backwards thinking that creeps into your minds?
