I can agree with that. I don't think that that violates what I said. In my free time between checking on tables, I spend time with the customers that tip well, not out of some sort of desire to get more money, honestly, by that time they would probably tip me well regardless, it is because they are the ones who, to me, are paying for my over and above attentions. I sit and BS with them because they enjoy it.

Only restaurants I've been to who've ever demanded a tip is when you have a table of 6+ or 8+...the "gratuity" thing. It's usually a 15-20% gratuity depending on the restaurant. I actually don't like this. Waiter/waitresses need to earn their tips rather than get them for free with a large group. They know that no matter how bad they serve a table of 6 people they're still going to get a decent tip out of it. That's just wrong to me.

good? 20%
normal? 15%
bad? 5-15%

That's exactly how I end up tipping after a meal. Unless they demand a 15% tip for bad service. Then they get 0.

Having worked in a locally owned, independent restaurant for more than four years, and being an assistant manager of said restaurant:

Tipping should not be required, it should be done when the service given warrants it.

If the person serving you is an asshole, feel free to leave NOTHING. I have no sympathy for the people who ignore their customers and then still expect to be tipped.

If you are waited on properly, given the attention you should be given, and enjoyed your dining experience, leave an appropriate tip.

That being said, if you regularly go someplace and regularly get quality food at a reasonable speed, for the love of God, LEAVE A DECENT TIP. It amazes me that so many people would see me five days a week for lunch, get the best food they could possibly be given from a restaurant in its class, pay almost nothing for their meal, and still never even consider tipping.

There is a small handful of customers that I see regularly who tip generously, and they get *perfect* food and service every time because of it. You get what you pay for...

Although, to clarify, I do not expect a tip just for doing my job. If a customer doesn't have a lot of money and can't afford a tip, that's no problem with me. If they genuinely don't realize that tipping is appreciated, I can live with that. But when some asshole comes and buys his $4 meal with a $100 bill, gets ridiculously good service and food, and doesn't tip because he's just a cheap dickhead, that's just downright sad.

My wages are adequate, and I'll only be there for another year or so to finish college, so I'm not getting too worked up about it. But the attention and care that some foodservice workers put into their jobs are wholly unappreciated.

My personal guidelines for tipping: When someone sucks ass at waiting on you, leave them NOTHING. This will accomplish two things: 1) They'll hopefully get the point that they suck, and either improve or find another profession. 2) You'll have extra money to give to the next person who actually does their job properly.

I used to tip a standard 10-15%, but now it's more like 0% - 50% because of my newly adopted guidelines. The guy who works his ass off and gets a $20 tip on a $40 meal really appreciates it, and the guys who don't care about doing a good job get nothing. All is well in the world!

It reallys burns me when places take advantage of kids just because their kids.

Expects it? As a pizza delivery driver I expected it.. if people didn't tip you'd be paying a $3 delivery charge instead of $1 to pay for my gasoline and maintenence fees.

Like I said, you GET A PAYCHECK. If you want more money, GET ANOTHER ONE or GET A DIFFERENT ONE.

You don't deserve anything other than a paycheck. You're a fvcking ape if you think you deserve to receive any money other than what's on the ticket from me and what's on your paycheck from your employer. I earned my money goddamnit and just because you chose to take a job driving around in no way entitles me to pay you anything more than what's on the ticket. Fvck off.

I imagine most of the food you consume contains other people's spit and snot. If I were you, I'd only eat at a restaurant once and never go back........but then again, that assumes you really are the jackass you pretend to be. Most likely you meekly give out tips quick as humanly possible so as to not miss any important discussions on ATOT........

Most waiters/waitresses get less than $2.50 an hour. They depend on the gratuity to actually get money at their job.

That said, I'd probably get pissed if someone specifically asked me for a tip or automatically added it to the bill, which would result in me giving a nice fat tip of $0.

BOO FVCKIN HOO. I'm so sick of that sh|tty ass argument. They chose to take the job. Don't like it? Get a different job or a second one. Or a third one. I don't give a fvck. You don't *deserve* anything more from me than what's on the ticket.

Who poured sand in your vagina?

My selfish, self-centered bitch of an ex girlfriend had this "I deserve a tip because I don't make enough money" mentality and yet she didn't go looking for a different job.

Even before I met her, you could have called me Mr. Pink.

Oh, and now the real story comes out...

Solid gold!

what an amusing thread. I'll just put in that restaurants should start paying a normal wage, and basically increase cost by 15%, and completely drop this whole tipping business. And altho I would have to agree w/ Nik on this whole backwardedness, I do tip, mainly because I'm a sympathetic bum and have friends who are waiter/treses working through college.

I agree. However, I define "what you pay for" as the amount that's on the bill and "what you get" as the food and service that the customer deserves simply because they're the customer. None of this mafia "pay me not to fvck sh|t up" business.

I work as a waitor and a caterer.

I make most of my money as a caterer ($15 hr, normal and 22.50 when I work as a "team manager"). As a waitor for a larger resturaunt I got paid minimum wage and then the rest was tips. On an average night I would make betweem $9-12/hr (including the salery) and ona good night I would be pushing $20.

I also worked fine dining for a bit. This resturaunt paid waiters minimum wage but the tips were incredible. We only had 13 tables. There I made lots in tips, but with a $300 bill you sorta expect it :). I never got a no tipper there, I would have been very upset, not because I didnt get any money, but because its not easy serving fine dining, and its not like these guys cant afford it. I mean, at a restruaunt with $60 plates you expect a tip.

Yeah, because managment doesn't make enough money to pay you better and you can't manage to find a new job. Yes, this means that you DESERVE a tip, whether you're actually going above and beyond your job description or whether you're simply doing the job that your employer is paying you to do.

Again, blame your employer for offering such a low wage and blame yourself for accepting the job. Don't blame the customer for your and your employer's decisions.

I put anywhere from 10-20% tip depending on service, wait time, etc etc.

When they ask for tip, I just say sorry, can you print out a new receipt? Then I put a big zero for tip.

What do you guys do.

I've never been to a restaurant that demanded a tip for a normal sized group. The 15% gratuity is normally added to the bill for large groups, but that pretty common.

Question: Have you ever worked in food service?

Every time there is a thread like this, always count on Nik to dominate the thread with his asshole mentality. I have nothing to say that hasn't been said except that I feel sorry for you - so consistently bitter and stubborn - so consistantly selfish to go against what is an accepted practice in this country and fvck over people that count on those jobs to survive and raise their kids.

Just wondering - is this ex-girlfriend the one that cheated on you? That explains some of your bitterness, if so.

Naw, don't sweat it. There are plenty of ways to f*ck up your pizza and you won't even know it until after you eat it.

Just think about pee pee tracks across the tomato sauce next time you're inhaling a slice. :)

Nik,

I don't know what your ex-girlfriend did to you to establish your psychosis against waiters, but you really need to let it go. Such fixations aren't healthy.

If you want to punish the "system" of the evil restaurant owner mafia, you should stop frequenting their establishments rather than short changing the waiters.

Stop foisting your anger on the waiters and restaurants, when you're the one with the problem.

Somehow, I think thats the completly wrong response. That will only get you in much worse sh!t than just not getting a tip.

EVERYBODY expects a tip. When you get good service at a restaurant, do you think it's because the waiter is just an All-American Nice Guy? Just because they don't make it obvious doesn't mean they don't expect it. I suppose that's why being an actor and being a waiter seem to go hand-in-hand.

Unless I get absolutely crappy service, I tend to over tip. I spend a good number of years in restaurant work (bus boy, dish washer, cook, waiter, etc). I know what kind of a ass busting job it is.

I think some of the yahoos who refuse to tip need some time in a commercial kitchen. They'd be crying like a Frenchman (or a little girl, whatever).

Nearly every place i have orderd from have a delivery fee. When they have it i don't tip. Most times the fee is far cheaper then i would have tipped them also. I also will tell the delivery guy why i want all my change back. Most of the time they think about it and agree.

I used to deliver pizza for Pizza hut when i was younger. i got paid min wage, tips and .25 cents per delivery.

At the time they did not have a delviery fee and i got a lot of tips. then they started charging a $2 delivery fee and my tips droped in half!

but now that i baught a house in the country i don't have to worry about it. The only place that delivers is really bad. Not worth the money for the pizza unless you need to clean out yoru system. heh

Typical, just like the rest of the reading-comprehension-deficient half-wits in this thread. I thought the same way I do now way before I ever knew that my ex girlfriend existed.

Way to go, champs!

Who's the responsible party for short changing the waiters? It certainly can't be THEIR FVCKING EMPLOYER now can it? Yeah, that's right, blame the customer and force the customer to tip! That is, by far, the most intelligent way to handle the situation.
