I didn't really notice it... but as the old saying goes, 'you get what you pay for'

A pack of Dial soap is a pack of Dial soap. A box of Frosted Flakes is a box of Frosted Flakes. Target is CONSISTENTLY higher-priced than Wal-Mart, so I shop at Wal-mart.

I don't give a crap about a "premium" shopping experience. I have better things to spend my money on instead wasting it by paying more for an item someplace else.

I walked into a 24-hour Wal-Mart early this morning and got a Christmas card, two boxes of chocolates and two DVDs. I was in and out in about 5 minutes (went through self checkout).

Why the hell would I go to Target to buy the EXACT same items for a higher price?

You must have nice walmarts in your area. You're in the minority. Almost every single Walmart I've been to has been a sh!thole. We're talking over 7-8 different states. The place is always a mess. It's almost always impossible to find sh!t because everything is scattered all over the place. The employees are usually incompetent idiots that have no clue where anything is and tend to give you attitude if you have the audacity to ask for help. I could go on and on.

I do have nice Walmarts in my area here in Texas...

Of course, I also had nice Walmarts in my area when I lived in Oklahoma...

My wife has worked for Walmart for 5 years and just gave notice as she got an office job. Overall she has enjoyed her time however we have decided that we want to spend our weekends together. We do the majority of our shopping at walmart and will continue to do so (even though we are losing our discount). Bingo.

A common theme among the fervent Walmart haters is that all or most are anti-capitalist liberal socialist elitists. And then there are the mindless band-wagoners who see others irrationally hating Walmart and do the same to fit in.

Walmart hating is now a liberal fad... a very sad one.

As for my local Walmarts I have two.

The closest one is older non-supercenter and is a bit crowded and run down. Liberal elitists in the area have kept Walmart from building a new Supercenter at that location for years, but recently lost and construction begins soon. Because of this I use the new Meijers that is right next door to the lot the new Walmart Supercenter is to be built. Curiously the new Meijers is every bit as big as a Walmart supercenter, but for some reason the liberals had no problem with it at all. Nor did they have a problem with the new Furniture Row supercenter, two new car dealer supercenters and three hotels in the same area... only the new Walmart Supercenter. The kicker? Walmart had plans to build before ALL these other places were announced, much less built.

Gee, I wonder why they only opposed the Walmart?

The other Walmart in my area is further away on the other side of town, is a newer Supercenter and is very nice to visit.

The biggest laugh? The nice Walmart in town is in an area most would consider "rednecky." (Blue collar) The older, rundown one that was kept from building a new Supercenter is on the high end side of town.

Yep in the minority there. You did see that that particular Walmart is a pilot store.

Central...around Austin

My definition of "nice" is only relative to the other discount chains like Target, Kmart and such.

targets gotten nicer in recent years to combat walmart. originally it was pretty ghetto too..only slightly better than kmart.

"an economist professor of mine, who worked at the justice department before teaching law, says that walmart's prices are actually higher on un-advertised things. i've never tried to independently verify that, however."

i remember reading about that somewhere. yes their normal prices can be less than a deal. they keep their promotions on display to give the illusion of good deals. but if you want the nicer model r whatever, u get no deal, but your already in the store so you might just pick it up anyways.

I have.

Did it after watching a special that said, to paraphrase, "The advertised price of a microwave might be the lowest in town, but the other microwaves that you actually want may be priced higher."

Not true.

Walmart's microwaves were priced lower for every model that was also available at Target, the PX, Best Buy, and Home Depot. I have also checked for other goods.

Here, the SuperWM and SuperT are literally right across the street from the each other. Consequently, I find the prices between the 2 very competitive on many items. Both stores are fairly newly built, clean, and the staff of each, generally friendly and helpful if asked. Target definitely hires the hotties though.

The biggest reason I do most my shopping at the SuperT, is that I like their selection of grocery items that I will buy in a superstore, more,*get my meat and produce from Publix and farmers markets* it is less crowded, and I don't shop for clothes, shoes, or most electronics in either.

I don't know if it is a national thing or not, but when sliding the CC at Walmart here, it asks you "Was the store clean today?" yes or no. So they are evidently trying to address the common complaint of their stores being "dirty".

BTW, the Walmart here, is mostly populated by elderly and/or retirees, that moved here from all over the country, for the year round golf and such, as my area is chock-a-block with them.

My experience as well. They have been lower on everyday household goods like paper products, cleaning products, and personal care items too.

And for some of us, thats not a big problem. Although just about the only thing I trust SA for is those santas these days. They don't have much of a stellar rep otherwise IMHO.

I prefer target because locally, they are better usually. I've been in bad targets, bad wally worlds and bad kmarts, it isnt a big deal. I have a superwalmart that is closer than others and isn't too bad though I don't care for their grocery section. My problem with walmart is, while cheap in some areas, like in all shopping/consumering you have to pay attention. Also, don't ever buy calling cards from walmart. Most often their prices are no better than many other stores and I once had an att card from them that had a bloody walmart bs ad line play every time I used the card. Since then, I only buy stuff that isn't going to waste my time with more ads for their crap when I'm trying to make a phone call.

Target doesn't allow any charity to set up shop outside their store, and I'm glad. I hate being guilted into giving away money anytime I walk into or out of a store. I hate going to Lowe's on a Saturday afternoon, because almost invariably someone who makes more money than I do is there asking me to buy some crap so their kid can go on some unnecessary trip. Pay for your own damn kid's trip! If your kid needs to spend a week in Florida for "spring training" for high school baseball or if she wants to go to a cheerleading or band competition in Hawaii, don't ask me to pay for it! I buy from the Girl Scouts though, their cookies are so good!

Target doesn't want to deal with that, so they bar EVERYONE from doing fundraisers at their store. They give a hell of a lot of money to charities though.

Where I live, there are 3 Walmarts and probably a dozen or more Target stores. I don't care which one I shop as long as I can get the stuff that I want.

What is this Target you speak of? I would really like to find one of these Targets in Canada, but it seems to be that they don't serve to Canadians...?

The other Walmart in my area is further away on the other side of town, is a newer Supercenter and is very nice to visit.

The biggest laugh? The nice Walmart in town is in an area most would consider "rednecky." (Blue collar) The older, rundown one that was kept from building a new Supercenter is on the high end side of town.

Why is it so hard for you to believe that people who don't shop at Walmart do so because of repeatedly horrible shopping experiences? I'm all for saving money, but going to Walmart just makes me angry most of the time. Not to mention that with all the money I save on Target's clearance deals, it probably is just as cheap as shopping at Walmart. And Target sells nicer clothes.

There are things that Target doesn't sell though, particularly in the automotive, sporting goods and pet areas. Last time I went to Walmart was to buy fish. It took 15 minutes and 3 pages over the intercom to get someone to help me. I debated on just getting the fish out myself, but that's not really allowed. The tanks were dirty and had dead fish in them. The guy mangled the fish as he was taking them out of the tank, and half died within a couple of weeks. Then I went to PetSmart - wow, talk about a huge difference! The fish were in nice, clean tanks. The fish were alive and healthy and not overcrowded. I'll never buy a fish from Walmart again, prices be damned!

I don't hate Walmart, I just hate shopping there.

I never understood why people are afraid of saying NO and walking away. yes they have people ringing bells or tables for scouts etc. but all you have to do is say nope and walk off.

As has been said, your Walmart is not representive of all Walmarts. I gave two very contrasting examples and even pointed out that I do not shop at my closest Walmart.

Based on the number of people all over the country who don't shop at Walmarts for the same reason as me, I think my Walmart is like many other Walmarts. And even if my Walmart is not typical of Walmarts, and all of the other people who don't stop at Walmart live near atypical Walmarts, how can you fault us for not liking and not shopping at Walmart? It's not a liberal fad, it's people demanding better service or better products (yes, they sell a lot of the same products, but Target also sells a lot of better products particularly in the clothing department). Kind of like why I get my hoagies from Wawa instead of Subway.

There are ~3300 stores in the US. Now it's been a while since I took stats, but I don't believe 2 qualifies as a representative sample.

I've never been into a WalMart by choice. And I pretty much hate target too, but I'll take target over walmart any day of the week.

Of course. Walmart has normal people and a lot of trash. Target is a touch more expensive and as such filters out most of the riff raff, so it's got less crowding and the women are, on average, 2/10 higher than women at Walmart.
