i find it amazing that the majority of the pro-target shoppers use the "i'll pay 15 cents more for a soap dish" to shop at target.
all i can say is, if you're only buying soap dish(es).. sure, go to target and get a more peaceful shopping experience. my fiancee and i have been shopping at both stores pretty evenly. we go to target to find higher-priced, higher-quality items that walmart doesn't offer (i.e. a nice shadow box at target for about $20).
on the other hand, everyday items such as branded laundry detergent, hand-soap, paper towels, cost significantly less at walmart. saying that it costs 15 cents less per item is honestly going out on a limb, and you all know it. one example:
Clean and Clear facial cleanser:
Target: $6.99
Walmart: $3.79
at Walmart, it costs a little over half compared to Target. we do our monthly supply shopping.. well.. once a month. typical costs at Target were anywhere from $50~80. at walmart, it rarely went above $50. we're talking about the exact same items.
so when do we head to Target? when we feel a bit stressed out, and need some peace and quiet, as many others have mentioned. heading to walmart is more along the lines of getting gas; we know exactly what we're looking for. we make a list, go in, buy, and get out.

Not really. Their electronics is as cheap or cheaper, and they carry better brands. Same with clothes and housewares. Walmart is actually starting to fear Target's competition. Only thing I find cheaper at Walmart is their cleaning supplies, and maybe their lawn care stuff. Walmarts goofy off brands turn me off too.

I don't find that to be the case at all. I use Axe Snake Peel soap- $2.78 at Target, $3.79 at Walmart. Mach 3 blades seem to be nearly $1.50 more at Walmart. I looked at a 22" Sharp lcd at Target that was the same prices as a Yakahamahootche brand at Walmart.
Walmart is cheaper on cereal, milk, and foodstuffs. Windex was also about .50 less expensive. Everything else, if it is cheaper it's because they end their prices with .94 instead of .99. ( I went shopping today at both stores- had to finish Christmas shopping
)I've been to several (at least four) Wal*marts in the tampa area. I say 80 percent of my visits have been negative. I will pay more, drive farther and be happy to go to Target and not have to put up with Wal*mart.

Personally the stuff that you're going to buy at either are the same brand, made by the same people and are packaged the same, so unless you are buying Walmart or Target brand stuff, you'll be paying less at Walmart for the same stuff. I'd rather have to put up with darker lights or whatever small complaints I have with Walmart than to pay the premium at Target to get what, nicer staff? At a department store?

Target is not paying a Premium. It's sometimes more expensive than WalMart but not much. But the quality of the store and the merchandise is normally much higher. We go to KMart a lot but they have a new WalMart that is closer so we use that more now. But rumors are that there is a Target planned for about a mile from my house which would Rock! Especially since it'd be right across the street from a Kohls.
I *hate* the checkout lines at walmart. At their local grocery store, thankfully they have about 12 self-check stations and bother to turn them on. They seem to flow pretty well with only 1 or two people monitoring them. At the super-walmart, they have 4 self-checkout lanes and usually have 2 or 3 running. Additionally, there are twenty unmanned, employee operated lanes and 4 manned employee lanes. So bring your reading material or you'll have to watch the mongoloids around you. Their self-checkout POS's have an annoyingly slow UI, but still are much better than Albertsons or Kroger. Those abominations must be designed by the geniuses that build set-top TV boxes.

didn't read the whole post but in college we did a case study and the lighting and aisle space were both noted in the case study.
Target>Wal_HELL.
