Target is more expensive than Wal-Mart.

I didn't really notice it... but as the old saying goes, 'you get what you pay for'

A pack of Dial soap is a pack of Dial soap. A box of Frosted Flakes is a box of Frosted Flakes. Target is CONSISTENTLY higher-priced than Wal-Mart, so I shop at Wal-mart.

I don't give a crap about a "premium" shopping experience. I have better things to spend my money on instead wasting it by paying more for an item someplace else.

I walked into a 24-hour Wal-Mart early this morning and got a Christmas card, two boxes of chocolates and two DVDs. I was in and out in about 5 minutes (went through self checkout).

Why the hell would I go to Target to buy the EXACT same items for a higher price?

I don't find that to be the case at all. I use Axe Snake Peel soap- $2.78 at Target, $3.79 at Walmart. Mach 3 blades seem to be nearly $1.50 more at Walmart. I looked at a 22" Sharp lcd at Target that was the same prices as a Yakahamahootche brand at Walmart.

Walmart is cheaper on cereal, milk, and foodstuffs. Windex was also about .50 less expensive. Everything else, if it is cheaper it's because they end their prices with .94 instead of .99. ( I went shopping today at both stores- had to finish Christmas shopping ;) )

That's odd. I've compared many different things at our Walmart, Target, PX, and Home Depot/Best Buy/Circuit City (for things that carry over)...because I have tons of free time.

For everything from microwaves to hygiene items to electronics and so forth, Walmart has almost always been cheaper.

Myth that Walmart is always cheaper. Depends on what's on sale, just like anywhere else.

To the OP...you're dead on with your observations. We have a 3 year old Walmart here and it went from looking nice and spiffy to now looking like it's 15 years old. Stock sitting on pallets all over the place. Nasty floors all the time. Shelves all disorganized. And yes, it looks like you're at the state fair when you see the people shopping there. Scary.

Ok, I'll throw this out there...

We have two Walmarts in the area. Across the street from each, there are Targets. Why do so many more people go to Walmarts then and the Targets are always near empty if the Warlmarts are so nightmarishly worse? I live in an upper-middle class suburban setting, so it's not like we have trailer park trash or whatever you guys call them around here...

I do admit that I recognize the differences between Target and Walmart, but for a department store like the aforementioned, it doesn't make a difference. I go in, find what I need, and get out. It's not like I'm buying a digital camera or a TV or god forbid a heart transplant and need the best service available...

The only reason I would shop at Walmart is for something such as groceries, and the target near me doesn't have anything of the sort.

I pretty much dislike both stores, but I dislike Target more.

because, simply put, Walmart has cheaper prices.

How about that Walmart is cheaper for nearly all items? Or that Walmart is cheaper for a weekly basket of goods?

I've found both of those to be true.

I've had the opposite experience with the local Walmart here.

Because Anandtech's membership is most-heavily weighted in area's where Walmart shoppers are most concentrated, right? ;)

Besides, what I've said is based on empirical experience rather than subjectivity...

From the looks of the thread, you'd think that:

Wal-mart is a Leper colony. People empty their dirty needles in the parking lot, there are random stabbings and shootings in the feminine products aisle, little children piss and cough all over potato chips, candy and canned goods, and trailer park moms rub their crotches with broomstick handles, then put them back on the rack.

Meanwhile at Target, free BJs, free Starbucks coffee, aisles lined with gold and diamonds and you get your own personal shopping assistant!

It all depends on what you're looking for. Those complaining about ultra nasty Walmarts must live in ultra nasty towns, because they're all about equal in that regard over here. I feel for those of you who are being mugged, raped, and killed on a daily basis in your local Walmarts. :(

Costco is the cheapest, but they have the least variety.
Walmart is next cheapest and best overall.
Target is expensive, although they do have good clothing for children.
KMart is slow, the most expensive, and lazy teenage bastards run the store.

I have never been in a Target store and I will never do so. They barred the Salvation Army Santas from ringing their bells outside all their stores. They're Grinches!

You don't get to become the world girdling money sucking machine that Walmart is buy actually listening to the customers. You get there buy paying the cheapest wages, offering the worst incentives and benefits, not giving a crap about such things as décor and looks, and strong arming everyone from your suppliers to his suppliers to the raw material producers.

OK there are a ton of generalizatioons and the important thing is to check out your local for the actual truth.

1. Walmart where I live is actually normally clean and most of the employees are helpful.
2. the target 30 miles up the road while clean does not have floor associates (if they do they are hiding) so if you can not find something you are on your own.
3. Walmart pays more than target
4. on the health care issue I have two issues with people saying that walmart is forcing people to have welfare and sucg.
a. there is no requirement for employees to be provided with health care
b. my mother in law works at walamrt and has health insurance through walmart that is better than what I had through my first job in MN

People want to say that walmart mistreats their employees and does not pay them enough but I want to ask why did they take the job?
Why should a job that requires MIMINMAL SKILL paid a high salary? These people working there are not highly educated, do not bring many employyer desired skills, and typically can leave and find work elsewhere (although the local mom and pop there will be less pay and no benifits). why s walmart still able to staff the stores if it is so bad.

We have reached the age of entitlement where people believe they are entitled to a high paying job, super health benifits and not having to do any actuall work. I have seen people here that will say things like "I will only work as hard as they pay me for" and "for that amount of money they can not expect me to be productive"

My wife has worked for Walmart for 5 years and just gave notice as she got an office job. Overall she has enjoyed her time however we have decided that we want to spend our weekends together. We do the majority of our shopping at walmart and will continue to do so (even though we are losing our discount). Neither of us feels bad there is not a target or kmart within our small town and we even drive 15 miles about once a month to the super walmart for our "big grocery" shopping.

I have read books and watched specials on walmart and they all have an agenda and make it sound like profit is the root of all evil. and that walmart needs to be taken down as they want to control the world ;) The fact is that Walmart has paid their employees what they needed to in order to hire them. They have strong armed vendors and used their strength in the market to gain benifit (again as they should of)

As soon as a company reaches a certain level they become EVIL for some reason. I personally believe alot of this is just envy but who am I to say.

The real reason that walmart is able to offer lower prices is that there distribution is secoond to none and they do a better job at allocating resources than most. the system they have created allows them to measure and manage about every part of the bussiness and that is good for walmart and considering the margins they make good for consumers as well.

You must have nice walmarts in your area. You're in the minority. Almost every single Walmart I've been to has been a sh!thole. We're talking over 7-8 different states. The place is always a mess. It's almost always impossible to find sh!t because everything is scattered all over the place. The employees are usually incompetent idiots that have no clue where anything is and tend to give you attitude if you have the audacity to ask for help. I could go on and on.

That would work if their customers were forced into shopping there. Last I checked, they weren't.

As such, shopping at a Walmart was better than all other alternatives for them, so I think that sorta debunks what you're saying about them not listening to customers.

Tough break :(
