I usually go to Walmart pretty late at night so it's never crowded when I go, though I imagine it would be more crowded if I went at a reasonable time.

The Target is never crowded when I'm shopping at Walmart because the Target is already closed when I try shopping there :(

Push. There's few unfriendly people here in small-town Texas :)

Trust me, all retail people hate you and don't want to be there, unless:
a) It's their first week and their spirits haven't been broken by the public
b) They're completely insane, in which case, I'd want to keep my distance. I'd prefer to be the only person to ever wear my skin, thank you very much.
Again I dont want to make generalizations, but at my local target this is not the case.
I have seen many of the same folks there for months on end. They are genuinely happy and like their jobs and place of employment. They also treat the customers much better than the local wal-mart. And they cant all be completely insane. We would have had too many incidents by now and that is not the case.
Overall, much better experience for me. If I really had to save lots of money I would go to dollar-land and buy crap or just shop online. But I dont want to wait for weeks at a time just to get basic stuff.

These are the dumbest generalizations. Guess what? Retail stores vary from place to place. Naturally they follow a general stereotype, but that doesn't mean that every store in that chain simply follows rules that make it good or bad. It has more to do with the region and the quality of the employees than the name of the store.

This is one of those topics that come up from week to week that's just idiotic. Ooh, I went to a retail store and it was good/bad. I'm going to make sweeping generalizations about that chain, several other chains, and the quality of the patrons who frequent each one so the forum can start drawing lines in the sand and dividing people based on where they buy their groceries.
Its amusing you would complain about generalizations after making plenty of your own.
If you had actually bothered to read the thread you would see most of us actually made comments on the specifics of our local wal-marts and targets.
I guess you dont think the rules of hypocrisy apply to you.
Wouldnt happen to be a christian would ya?

(See how irritating it is to have it thrown back in your face? ;) Next time remember that you dont need to increase your post count by being obnoxious. You are allowed to be nice here and make intelligent remarks.)

Several generalizations were made in this thread, and though there were lots of good replies, he's right: (some) people come to conclusions based on their local store, and make inferences about all stores of that chain.

I don't see the need to berate him when he is, in fact, correct.

I will admit that most Target cashiers are nicer than Walmart ones where I live. The stock clerks are the same no matter where you go, though. They don't want to deal with customers, they just want to get the shelves restocked quickly so they can go back on break.

Exactly why are you interacting with these people? I walk in, get my stuff and leave.

They don't bother me - I don't bother them. It's pretty easy and they're people also. I feel no need to discriminate against them.

I also almost always use the self checkout. It's easy and I get out quick.

Hahah, man, I dont interact with anyone there. But the rowdy crowds and people running all over the place and items being thrown around. Of course, thats an exaggeration, but it's like being in a flea market. The self checkout was a good idea, and I always prefer to use them at other stores. But at Walmart, they never seem to work.

They never seem to not work at our Walmart. Maybe you're just using them incorrectly?

As a former retail employee, I can tell you, you're wrong. They hate you and their jobs. Target may be better at convincing them to pretend to like their jobs than wally world is though.

i never found any difference between target and wal mart except that target has red letters in it's name and wal mart blue

otherwise it's the same cheap copycat junk in both stores that is made in third world countries by little kids chained to their desks

If you shop at WM during daytime on the weekends, you are not so smart.

I do agree that TG is nicer looking, cleaner, and more friendly but also higher prices <not all, but most>.

For example, this weekend WM has the Optimus Prime transformer for $50 and TG has the same one for $70. I don't know about you, but I will pick whoever has the lower price <with same brand names>

One more thing, WM has a store within 5 minutes from my house, TG has a store within 30 minutes.

I've been in there while they've been cleaning Walmart...It appears that they do sections at a time starting around midnight...

I've also been in there mid-day while they're cleaning some part...

Not everyone shares your opinion!

Sadly I've heard people say things like this. In a small town they said they always saw someone they knew while at walmart, so they felt like they had to look nice

Yup.

When I lived in west Louisiana, the Walmart was pretty much where young guys went to meet girls so everyone always dressed up...the guys even knew to go to Walmart around noon on Sunday because that's when the girls would be dressed up and looking nice after coming from church.

Closest Target was 50 miles away so I guess you can't make a straight comparison...

I don't like to generalize, but the people at the Walmart in town are either really good at faking it, or genuinely do enjoy their jobs.

Not so much at the Target...

I've always marveled at people who get their panties in a twist at the types of people that shop at Walmart. Walmart's prices are lower, so lower income people will shop at Walmart. It's pretty simple. Feel free to shop at Target if you don't want to be around people who want to spend less.

Most of the Target cashiers at the one near me are freaking hot :) The Walmart ones.... :(

The Target cashiers around here tend to be older ladies...while the Walmart cashiers tend be hot, young women :)

Yowza!

Oddly enough, it's the Target cashiers that are slower and much less accurate

Bingo for me! If they would just take all the junk out of the middle of the main isles, it would make it SOOO much easier / less crazy to shop there.

I'm a wanderer when it comes to shopping at department stores like Target / Walmart. So clean, bright, and "pleasant" is a big deal to me.

I will say I do not like shopping anywhere. I do hate shopping at Walmart at an even higher level though. It just feels awful shopping there. Over crowded and rushed. Although the store here is very clean and the shoppers are from all walks of life.

We do not have a Target here but I will say I'd rather shop in Zellers or Sears to get what I need over Walmart.

5) Target has nice bright lighting that makes me happy. The 'lighting' at walmart makes me feel like i'm in some siberian prison.

Every Target I've been in was noticeably darker than Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart is always bright... unless it's one of the old school non-Supercenters.

Target >>>>>>>>>>>>> Walmart by far.

Higher prices? Produce, sure. The produce part of Super Target is aimed at a different market than Walmart's. Everything else - the prices are on par in terms of the same goods as is Walmart. If you're going to argue over $.30 in price, get a life.

Walmart has a much better brainwashing program which tends to make their poverty level workers a bit more pleasant than the teenager counterparts at target.

I loathe Walmart, but their prices eat at my insatiable appetite for froogleness like a cancer sometimes.

an economist professor of mine, who worked at the justice department before teaching law, says that walmart's prices are actually higher on un-advertised things. i've never tried to independently verify that, however.
