Almost all the stores are like that here - and it's exponentially bad during the holiday season - the general 'feeling' is that people don't care about the merchandise - when they're done looking it just goes back wherever, be it the floor, table, etc. They let their kids play with whatever. The aisles look like 50 monkees went on a shopping spree. We were in the grocery yesterday (Brand NEW HEB Plus) and it was trashed! I don't think it's the store, I think it's the people.* We spent half the time trying not to run over people that run out in front of you and then look at you dirty, and the other half of the time trying to avoid people that try to ram you in the arse and then look at you dirty. I has to ask one old lady and her 15 person family if they could move their cart out of the middle of the drink aisle, as they were sitting there arguing about cokes vs. store brand for their party, and my question was answered with dirty looks and a very rude grabbing and shoving of her cart (think little kids' behavior here). It's disgusting.

*On that note, I get a better 'feel' at Target than WM, but I don't necessarily think one is better than the other....

Sadly I've heard people say things like this. In a small town they said they always saw someone they knew while at walmart, so they felt like they had to look nice
As amusing as the newspaper article is it does pose a serious question?

If wal-mart patrons think they are so smart by saving a couple bucks why dont they just go to the Dollar Store or Dollar Tree instead?

These are the dumbest generalizations. Guess what? Retail stores vary from place to place. Naturally they follow a general stereotype, but that doesn't mean that every store in that chain simply follows rules that make it good or bad. It has more to do with the region and the quality of the employees than the name of the store.

This is one of those topics that come up from week to week that's just idiotic. Ooh, I went to a retail store and it was good/bad. I'm going to make sweeping generalizations about that chain, several other chains, and the quality of the patrons who frequent each one so the forum can start drawing lines in the sand and dividing people based on where they buy their groceries.

I'm pretty sure I spend more at Target than Wal-Mart and it is not just restricted to the price of similar merchandise. When I'm in Target I don't feel like I need to duck for cover and wall slide to what I need to buy. I can actually browse around a bit and not feel like some idiot might run me over with a shopping cart or 14 kids might suddenly run past me trying to find their hide & seek buddies.

a new super target just opened in aug near my home. all we had before was a super walmart and my wife and I HATED going to walmart. they have 30 checkout lines and on most days including sat only 10 would be open so waiting in a long line was the norm.

since the super target opened we dont go to walmart anymore. the store is not very busy and has everything we need. its a much more enjoyable shopping experience.

You're right there. I definitely wait in line a lot longer at Wal-Mart than I do at Target.

Same here. But generally, I try to shop for value. If I need some that is not a durable good but more for something in the immediate need category, I will shop Wal-Mart. If I want something durable, I will go to Sears. I find Sears has better prices than Target for better quality. I understand that Targets are trying to be the middle-class neighborhood store. the stores, including the super ones, just don't sell the things I want in the price range I want to buy.

I didn't really notice it... but as the old saying goes, 'you get what you pay for'

A pack of Dial soap is a pack of Dial soap. A box of Frosted Flakes is a box of Frosted Flakes. Target is CONSISTENTLY higher-priced than Wal-Mart, so I shop at Wal-mart.

I don't give a crap about a "premium" shopping experience. I have better things to spend my money on instead wasting it by paying more for an item someplace else.

I walked into a 24-hour Wal-Mart early this morning and got a Christmas card, two boxes of chocolates and two DVDs. I was in and out in about 5 minutes (went through self checkout).

Why the hell would I go to Target to buy the EXACT same items for a higher price?

Its amusing you would complain about generalizations after making plenty of your own.
If you had actually bothered to read the thread you would see most of us actually made comments on the specifics of our local wal-marts and targets.
I guess you dont think the rules of hypocrisy apply to you.
Wouldnt happen to be a christian would ya?

(See how irritating it is to have it thrown back in your face? ;) Next time remember that you dont need to increase your post count by being obnoxious. You are allowed to be nice here and make intelligent remarks.)

Sorry, the fiancee and I will only go to Super Walmart on a handful of occasions. We try to avoid it like the plague.

Now on the other hand, Walmart Marketplaces are very nice and bearable to deal with. We usually split it up between WM Marketplace and Publix. Of course, Publix is great and very nice people that know us, but it's very expensive there. Target is very nice too, but again, it's more expensive. I guess it all depends if I want to deal with retarded WM customers and get my "WM rage." :D

Anyway, target vs. walmart:

1) Target doesn't smell like an old people and broccoli. Walmart does.

2) Target is actually clean and organized. Walmart looks like a hurricane hit it.

3) Target has nice merchandise. Walmart's merchandise looks like crap.

4) The shoppers at target look like normal people. The shoppers at walmart look like they came out of a trailer park.

5) Target has nice bright lighting that makes me happy. The 'lighting' at walmart makes me feel like i'm in some siberian prison.

6) The aisles at Target are wide open, lots of space to walk around. The ailes at walmart are cramped.

7) Target has reasonable traffic. Walmart has just too many damn shoppers running over each other.

8) The salespeople at target are nice, friendly, and actually look happy to be working there. The salespeople at walmart look like they want a revolver to shoot themselves... and they're the most unfriendly people i've ever met.

Any other differences you've noticed between walmart and target?

Wow, that's exactly the opposite in my town.

Everything in the Walmart looks and feels new while the Target is old and run-down. The employees at Walmart are a ton friendlier than the ones at the Target.

Everything except the traffic, of course. Nobody wants to shop at that Target.

Welp, anecdotal evidence is fun!

Wal-Mart makes you feel stressed out the minute you enter the store. Noisy, rushed and cluttered. The most disgusting thing is items in the clothing sections thrown on the floor by trashy customers and ignored by employees.

I shop at both but only on Sunday mornings.

for your bolded part. That is a HUGE plus for me, i have not heard one blaring PA announcement at Target unlike walmart where i swear the PA is set to max volume. Also at target there are NO signs in spanish which is another big plus in my book. also at the walmart by my house 1/2 of the PA announcemts are in spanish and that really bugs me.

The Target in our town is old and rundown...looks as if it hasn't been renovated since the 80s. The Walmart looks shiny and new.

Oh wait, just remembered there's also a new Walmart that's less than two years old. Obviously, that one smells better than the Target as well :)

Both are actually very neat. It's as if someone follows behind lazy customers and puts things back where they're supposed to be. The layout in our Walmart is marginally more customer friendly.

This, of course, is based only on my experience of three nights ago when I needed to buy batteries.

In Target, they were in front of random aisles spread out throughout the store. The AAAs were in some crazy place while the AAs were by the sporting goods.

In Walmart, they were all in a big display, in electronics.

Score another one for Walmart.

I'd call this a push. Both seem to carry the same brands like Hanes socks and Energizer batteries.

1) Agreed
2) Agreed
3) It's the same crap. The brand names are essentially the same. This is a ignorant point.
4) Disagree
5) Disagree
6) Disagree, disagree, disagree
7) Agree, but only because you can find the same stuff at Walmart cheaper
8) Disagree, they're the same pimply farming teenagers or retirees or single mothers. no difference.

I live in a military town so everyone pretty much looks the same: Mid-20s guys with a young wife and an infant or two.

It's up to you whether or not you think we look like we came out of a trailer park ;)

i was in walmart the other day, 7 pm about 12 days before christmas, and they were hanging out the doors. however, there was SIX registers (out of 20-something) open.

This is consistently the problem with my local walmart. everything else aside, are you telling me they cant hire a few more "shoot myself in the head" people to man the registers??? i am used to the ghetto-ness of every other part of walmart, but having to wait 20 minutes *consistently* to check out the cheap crap i'm buying kills me.

is it possible the employees are all so bad they cant even cut it as cashiers?

Push.

If anything, I'd give this to our Walmart because the much higher ceilings make the lights feel a lot friendlier.

Probably a push. If anything the aisles in our Walmart are marginally wider...

sheesh that would suck.

the local wal-mart has 40 registers. they usually have at least 15 open. if you get more then 4 poeple in line they are calling more up.

but usually have a wait. people have full carts and slow workers. at the target they have 2 cashier lanes open with huge lines. bah

Trust me, all retail people hate you and don't want to be there, unless:
a) It's their first week and their spirits haven't been broken by the public
b) They're completely insane, in which case, I'd want to keep my distance. I'd prefer to be the only person to ever wear my skin, thank you very much.
