I saw that too, so I went to the LG USA website. The 1710SK is analog only. The 1710BK has both dsub and DVI.

If the 1710BK was 12ms or below, I'd already have it. LG will be putting the 1780U out sometime (they won't tell me when). It suppose to have 12ms response time.

Awe...hell!!

I missed that. All I saw was the 16.7 million color support.

What does the "FRC" mean?

I thought that if a monitor could display 16.7 million colors then it was 8-bit. Obviously, I thought wrong.

Most of the fast screens these days use the TN+Film matrix technology. These screens have poor viewing angles and typically, poor color reproduction. I don't think you can have it all right now.

So when are we gonna see a review of gaming 17" or 19" TFT's on AnandTech? I'm getting really close to buying a vp171b-2. I good review here would close the deal...

Yep, looks like they finally got it. That's a nice price too. I've just spent the last few hours playing HL2 on my VP171B-2, looks awesome!

Right now, is this the best bang for the buck in terms of 17" LCDs? I really want to order one.

Also: Dell just lowered their price to 368 and has free shipping--but there's still tax and a "state enviornmental fee." Total is $409. Are there any more coupons that you can add on the Dell website that'll bring it below the Newegg price?

Monarch (great ratings on Reseller Ratings) has this screen for $359 with no shipping or tax unless you live in Arizona.

Lowest price I found from such a good retailer. A few others such as ebuyer have it for around $355 total but I trust Monarch.

Anyone found a better price or deal? From what I've researched, this is not only the only 8 ms model on the market, but it's got DVI, is from a reliable manufacturer, and is fairly cheap compared to other models like the Samsung 710t or 172x. Comments/suggestions? I plan to order tomorrow.

Newegg.com has it for $360. PC Nation has it for $349. Both prices include shipping.

I've determined that I can't have what I want: true color 8-bit processing, no dithering, 12ms or less LCD. It doesn't exist (yet). Unfortunately, I can't wait long. My office will soon be a baby's room and the computer is being forced into a smaller space elsewhere. Thus my need for a space-saving LCD.

I think my stance on this is to wait and see what the ViewSonic VP171b-2 does to the competition/market. Having an 8ms panel that's priced about the same as 12ms panels is bound to: 1) force other manufacturers to introduce 8ms panels and 2) force other manufacturers to lower their prices on 12ms panels.

I'm not convinced I need 8ms when 12ms will do (I only game occasionally and with a new baby in the house it'll probably be even less) and I'd rather not pay for the increased speed if I don't need it. I'm still trying to sort that out.

THG has a review of the VP171b and it's fairly complementary except for the color reproduction which they put at average. Like others, I'd like to see how this panel does in a thorough review.

But for me, the clock is ticking.......If I had to buy today, I'd go with the VP171b-2 from newegg.

Good luck!

This is annoying. PCNation can't tell me if it's the 8ms model even though the manufacturer's part # is vp171b-2. Monarch lists it as HDTV ready, which I believe is only on the newer 8ms model, but when they sent me the tech specs, it said 16ms and didn't mention it being in a retail box.

Ordered it this morning at 10am EST (7am PST) and it's been "packed and sealed" (ie: ready to be shipped) since before 3pm EST. I expect for it to go out at 5pm PST. Newegg says I'll have my tracking number by 6pm PST. :D

I  newegg.

Edit: I ordered it with Express saver shipping and NO rush processing. But I used my "verified by visa" Bank of America visa card.

I think the 1704 is also a 6-bit panel. It's rather difficult to find a fast 8-bit panel :(

How can that be when everyone else claims it to be 6-bit???

xbit labs LCD guide

I haven't read through all of it, but on page 11 (3rd paragraph) it says:

Of course, this is still an emulation, which cannot match the true ?true color? reproduction, so such monitors are often specified to output 16.2 millions of colors ? if you see this number in the specs, know that you are dealing with an 18-bit matrix. Unfortunately, the text ?16.7 millions of colors? doesn?t mean anything ? many manufacturers write this in the specs of their 18-bit matrices, too.

Edit: that article is from sept. of 2004, so it is alittle dated in certain aspects, but the technical information should still hold true.

I just received mine from Dell. Got it for 10% off plus a $40 coupon. I also have a 16ms VP171B and will use them together with my dual DVI and put a video on each and compare. :)
