Verizon/Amazon To Team Up, Offer Competition in Satellite ISP field

Like I said in another thread, not wild about "broadband access for rural areas." Trumpies having internet access has not been a good thing and more will not be better.

But there's money to be made. That, and 1600 more space junk satellites in LEO.
 
So they're going to be riding spaceX rockets up into orbit, amirite? Cause BO sure isn't getting them there 😀

I'll believe it when I see it - more than a token investment, and no government assistance. These companies are profitable enough they don't need any help.

If not lying was a prerequisite to getting on the internet there would only be about ten people that would be allowed to use it.

On top of that, conservatives in the sticks already don't have real broadband to the house, but they're still batshit insane in love with fascist bullshit artists thanks to talk radio, Fox Noise, and the use of smartphones. Keeping broadband out of rural areas in an effort to combat the crazy strikes me as a bit like trying to defuse a bomb that already went off. How about instead we make remote learning (something that will happen again) for kids easier (or even possible) and allow mom and dad the opportunity to augment their small businesses with web based conveniences, maybe they'd all be less stressed, less desperate to believe liars like Trump and the various loons of Team Treason. Plus, while conservatives do mostly dominate the rural areas, in some places it's not by much. Some not at all. Just saying.

Whatever. I'm sure back in the 30s there were plenty of city folks who didn't see the need in electrify rural areas too. Same shit, different day.

I was all for programs that brought services to rural areas, from electricity to roads to doctors and hospitals to education to faster internet - but the last 4 years they have shown us what most of them are really like, and it ain't pretty. They are beyond help. Democrats have tried for many decades to expand these types of services there and what do we get? Shit people supporting the overthrow of democracy.

They are bad hombres.

This is a good thing. More options and more competition for rural area internet all over the world. I wish Verizon/Amazon all the luck because they're going to need it against SpaceX and Starlink.

I'm not a fan of Amazon's business practices, but if this causes other satellite providers to get more competitive pricing and maybe ditch the caps that would be a win. Satellite sucks, slow and overpriced. Maybe some bald guy fear is the kick in the ass it needs.

I find it hard to believe the folks at HughesNet heard this news and were thrilled. When vendors compete that is usually a good thing for consumers.

Blue Origin is already suing SpaceX and the government. They will try every dirty tactics to try to slowdown SpaceX and Starlink since Jeff Who? Bezos can't compete. But Bezos have lot of money and massive political influence with his Washington Post and government lobbyists. So never underestimate Copycat Jeff. Especially with Biden in office. Biden hates Elon Musk.

Qanon and right wing involvement with anti-vax started on social media. Conservative talking heads only picked up on those things after they were already popular among conservatives. There wouldn't be a qanon and substantially fewer right wing anti-vaxxers without the internet.

The internet has proven disappointing in many ways. For starters, it gives lie to the entire "marketplace of ideas" notion. Too many people just can't think critically enough to be exposed to this deluge of sludge. And right now, most of those people are on the political right. And much of the political right is rural.

Bear in mind that I'm not proposing anything in particular. It's not up to me. I just think it sucks that they're getting even more access.

Musk recently taunted Bezos when Tesla stock went up and he became the wealthiest person. I mean really? Both are crap human beings, regardless of the accomplishments of their companies.
