It's not going to hurt for me to shop around a bit, and see if I can get a better rate. I will be upfront about the ticket, because obviously they will find out anyway. What is the chance that my current company will give me a better rate when I tell them I am thinking of cancelling my policy?

Probably nil. You'll be one less patron in the high-risk column to them.

An ex girlfriend of mine used to live with a female friend of hers. They both got petty speeding tickets within a week of each other. They had the same insurance company, but different policies. Because they were in the same house, something to flagged for review by the insurance company. The company chose to cancel BOTH policies instantly.

Doesn't make sense to me, either, but there's a lot of bullshit in extortion --err, I mean insurance.

Yes I agree; there is a lot of shady business that goes on in the insurance industry. I will admit I don't know much about it. All I know is:

1) I've never had an accident.
2) I wasn't driving recklessly fast.
3) $80/month increase is excessive.

You have two chances of that...slim and none.

Shop around. They will ask if you have any tickets or accidents. If you lie, they'll find out and drop you immediately.

We went through an "Independent Agent" a few years back and got excellent coverage for about 1/2 of what we'd been paying with one of the "big name" insurance companies, yet are insured by one of the top rated companies in Kahleeforneeya.

I know lots of people here are all about doing as much as possible with "e-companies" over the internet, and that's fine...IF it is the best deal possible. I prefer to have an agent that I know...and who knows me just a phone call away...and is lower in cost than any of the on-line insurers.

(they were about 40% of Geico's price and about 60-70% of Progressive's price)

Yep I'm 24 and not married yet. I've never had an accident, but I guess they don't care about that.

one more year and you can get better insurance.

Can you try to defend yourself by saying that a moose was chasing you?

We have an agent as well, which I like because I can call the guy up easily and make changes to my plan, or even if I just have questions. Unfortunately the agent does not set the rates. He's just a middleman.

The absolute WORST case scenario is to be a white male driver 18 or younger. One of the BIGGEST factors is what car you drive and I'm not even going to bother factoring that garbage into this post. A friend of mine looked up how much a Z28 (or something similar IIRC, it was a long time ago) would be to insure at <18 with a ticket on his record and they wanted ten thousand dollars per year, no joke. Each individual adjective in that sentence that you change will lower your rate.

As an example, with age groups, a Class A ticket given to an 18 year old will affect their rates much more than the same ticket given to a 22 year old. Insurance companies usually lower yearly rates depending on age. My insurance rate dropped very slightly when I hit 19, then again a little bit more when I hit 22, then dropped quite a bit when I hit 26. Different companies have different ages but most follow a pretty similar routine.

If the only difference between 2 drivers is that one is male and one is female, the female will have a slightly lower insurance rate. Their rate will be affected less by a ticket than the male's would getting the same ticket, too.

Being young and male pretty much fucks you by itself.

I love how discrimination is built right into the system.

I was obviously being facetious.

Still, 12 over is ridiculous. 5 over is pushing it.

Pull over! It's the Cyber Police! Break the LAW and the consequences will never be the same!! RAAAWWWWWRRR!!!!!!!

lol....you are still arguing about this? Just deal with it. Really, what did you expect to happen? A lowering of rates? A pat on the back? If you are unhappy, just leave and go to another insurance company.

You were only going 12MPH over the speed limit. In most areas, they don't bother you until 15MPH over (at least here in most US states) And your insurance company is a rip off at $80 extra per month, that is $960 / year, probably for 2 - 3 years. Plus the fine from the court and the points on your license. Only justification for that is if ticket was in a School Zone.

He didn't ask for advice, he's just ranting. I'm sorry that you felt my comment applied to you and your feelings were hurt so bad by it. You must walk around threatening every guy on the street who looks at you funny. You are a very insecure individual.

Most of the posts were nothing like what you 3 were describing, and the only thing that I was offended by was the idiocy involved in your bumbling accusations about other people being criminals. I'm not sure what you're going for about hurt feelings and insecurity, as you posted in a belligerent manner before I did, I was merely responding to the idiocy involved in those posts.

Young drivers are easily the biggest problem group on the roads. Statistics don't lie. Sometimes you just need to learn a hard lesson. When you're in control of a 3000 lb vehicle, you'd damn well better be responsible in it.

Doing 45-47 in a 40mph on the streets in the SFV won't get you a ticket (I've been radared at those speeds). I've also been radared at 74 on a 65mph freeway, no ticket.

Doing 70-75mph is the norm here. If you are doing 75 or under, you better stay out of the fast lane, so people going 85+ mph can pass you safely.

Nope not a school zone for sure. Most cops around here will not stop people for doing < 20kph over the limit either. I came to find out later on that cops in that particular area are very picky. Probably because it's around a small town, and they have nothing better to do.

To those who are ripping on me with their "ZOMG you broke the law so you deserve it", you can get down off your high horses. I'm not complaining that there are consequences. I'm saying the punishment is disproportionate to the crime.

Tickets are usually classified by the 10's of mph. Smallest ticket being 1-10 over the limit, 2nd class ticket being 11-20, etc. It's not worth an officer's time to pull you over for 9 over the limit, even if that 9 puts you more than SEVENTY miles per hour.

Are your tire treads rated for that speed? If you corner, how hard are you cornering at that speed? Are your tire's sidewalls rated for that speed? What kind of road conditions?

There are too many fatalities due to fucking idiots on the road every year to let the general public decide what's safe and what's not.

There weren't speed limits right when cars and roads were married. It's all the morons who abuse this shit that gets laws put in place to irritate the rest of us -then they have the balls to break the law anyway, then COMPLAIN about getting in trouble.

LOL If your tires can't manage 120Kph I recommend you get that car the hell off the road.

I see just as many old people doing retarded, incompetent things on the road as young people.

True. They're the next biggest problem on the road. Still doesn't make young/new drivers any less dangerous.
