*Rant warning*

I get a letter from my insurance company. Hey your policy renewal is due, and oh by the way we are increasing your rate by $80 per month. Seriously what the hell? One ticket (for doing 20kph over on the highway - not exactly unusual around here) and my rate gets jacked up $80??? I must be a real menace to society for my rate to go up an extra $960 per year...

*UPDATE*

Did some calling around for new insurance quotes today. After getting a laughable quote of ~$8000 a year from one company they were actually kind enough to refer me to another company. This company just so happens to work in the same building as me as well :). They gave me a quote of ~$2600 per year. More that I was paying, but significantly better than what my current provider is offering for my renewal.

I can also confirm what other posters were suspecting. Rather than receiving a massive increase, I was actually losing a "benefit of the doubt" type discount. I really feel like I've dodged a bullet here. I think the extra $20 per month I will be paying is justified given my place in the "risk group," and much better than the $80 more my current provider is currently offering.

Well, it probably was going to go up anyway, and the ticket I'm sure didn't help.

Oh, and stop breaking the law, asshole!

what jules said or just shop around. ive always had pretty good luck with progressive... call them once, and if you dont like the quote call back again because sometimes another rep will give you a better price (at least in my experience).

so...was it worth it?

"Not unheard of" is still breaking the law. I don't go 12 over because I don't want to deal with the consequences of getting a ticket for doing 12 over.

Yes I realize I was breaking the law, and I accept the consequences. I would expect a small rate increase, but $80 per month is just excessive. Doing 20kph over isn't exactly uncommon, and isn't what I would consider dangerous on an open highway.

Or liars. Plus I have slowed waaaaaaaaaay down ever since, because the ~$300 ticket I got in the first place was enough for me. I feel like a speed bump on the highway doing the limit while grandma and grandpa ride my ass because I'm going so slow...

I'd say shop around.

Agreed that your rate should go up but $80/mo is crazy. Depends on how much car insurance costs though, in Canada I think it's similar to the US right? I think in the UK it's tons more expensive.

Anyway, last time I switched I didn't qualify for a 3-year no-ticket discount because of a speeding ticket my wife got in February 2008. Would have been about $80 less... per 6-month period! It'll be nice to get the discount come next February (assuming no tickets in the meantime) but it's not a massive savings. If that is the only recent speeding ticket you've gotten, your rate shouldn't be that high at other places.

Here come the cyber police, telling you dun goofed by breaking the law with their holier than thou attitude. Please ignore the fact that these same people break whatever laws they feel like. One of them is a software pirate, another one jaywalks, the other abuses his kids and the last is addicted to child pornography. Don't pay any attention to that though because you are an asshole for breaking the speed limit.

Agreed, EVERYONE speeds at least occasionally and no one can argue that $80/mo is a reasonable increase for a single ticket for an offense that isn't outrageous. It's not like he was going 50 kph over the limit.

Don't listen to them, just remember ATOT is full of assholes.

I pay $200 a month now for full insurance with both my GF and I as primary drivers on the vehicle. I get the feeling that they are jacking it up so much just because I'm young (24 years old).

Yeah, that innocent little toddler that you smear across the crosswalk won't give a shit whether you're out 300 or not.

Something tells me that innocent little toddler also wouldn't give a shit whether you're going 55 or 67.

I'd bet money that your rate did not go up but instead you lost any "good driving" discounts you may have had. For most companies, rates do not go up with one ticket; they view the loss of the discount as punishment enough.

Uh; why would there be a toddler walking across a freeway 11 o'clock at night? Pretty sure if that were to happen the driver would not be at fault.
