$80 a *month*? Sure that's not $80 per renewal period (every 6 months)?

I had a 10 over ticket with Allstate that bumped me $50 every 6 months. By the time I took the day off work to sit in the courthouse and pay the $210 bench fee for "supervision" it just wasn't worth it. It'll be off my record in three years.

Here come the cyber police, telling you dun goofed by breaking the law with their holier than thou attitude.

As surely as the sun rises and sets, these clowns come out of the woodwork whenever there's a thread involving traffic or parking tickets. So OP should feel free to ignore them.

$80 seems a bit excessive for only one fairly minor ticket. You'll definitely find a lower rate somewhere else, they're banking on you not wanting to deal with the hassle of switching.

also, remember rates just go up sometimes. i know somebody whos been with the same company for years and has a clean record their bill still went up 20 a month at their last renewal. insurance is just coverage you buy for a period of time, you should always be looking for a better deal or at least make sure your company is giving you competitive rates.

Uh; why would there be a toddler walking across a freeway 11 o'clock at night? Pretty sure if that were to happen the driver would not be at fault.

I was obviously being facetious.

Still, 12 over is ridiculous. 5 over is pushing it.

40% would never be considered a normal rate increase.

Or, they're looking at his age, sex, race, and driving history to evaluate their level of risk to continue insuring him.

Yes I realize I was breaking the law, and I accept the consequences. I would expect a small rate increase, but $80 per month is just excessive. Doing 20kph over isn't exactly uncommon, and isn't what I would consider dangerous on an open highway.

so would it still stop you from speeding?

If not, then it's too much.

i feel you dpoblood. all these law abiding "non speeders" in here are just toolbags

Here come the cyber police, telling you dun goofed by breaking the law with their holier than thou attitude. Please ignore the fact that these same people break whatever laws they feel like. One of them is a software pirate, another one jaywalks, the other abuses his kids and the last is addicted to child pornography. Don't pay any attention to that though because you are an asshole for breaking the speed limit.

Agreed, EVERYONE speeds at least occasionally and no one can argue that $80/mo is a reasonable increase for a single ticket for an offense that isn't outrageous. It's not like he was going 50 kph over the limit.

Don't listen to them, just remember ATOT is full of assholes.

You're right, its not like anyone gave him any good advice or anything before you dipshits posted. I notice two of you don't even offer any advice, you just talk shit.

Sense when is race factored into insurance rates? Hmm that sounds like a lawsuit waiting to happen.

Not true. Earlier this year Allstate bumped me up over $100 per 6 months without having a single ticket or claim on it. That was almost a 30% increase without me costing them a dime or having a ticket on it. I dumped them for Geico and saved $400 a year. Then Allstate came back 6 weeks after I changed and gave me $100 less a year than Geico charged.

In 6 weeks time my rates with Allstate went down 50%.

well add that and a ticket together and its not so outrageous. also, the percentage only matters to you. insurance companies are about risk management and maintaining profit... theres no department at state farm where somebody looks at all the rate changes proportionally and says "thats not fair!" when it swings too far.

Insurance companies salivate over these things, easy excuse to jack your rates and with an infraction figure you're better off staying than trying to find another who will probably start you w/ high rates when they check your history.

You got caught...so you get to pay more for the privilege of driving.

Have many/most of us driven that much over the speed limit at one time or another? Sure. I know I have...the trick is to not get caught...and to do so carefully.

In 40 years of driving, I've racked up just shy of 500,000 commercial miles and about as many on my personal vehicles. In all that time, I've had ONE speeding ticket that was charged to me.

HOWEVER, $80/month seems like a HUGE increase over one ticket.

As has already been mentioned, it could be a loss of safe driver discount that caused such a large increase.

How old are you? That may come into play as well. Under 25 and single get hit harder than us old married folks.

He didn't ask for advice, he's just ranting. I'm sorry that you felt my comment applied to you and your feelings were hurt so bad by it. You must walk around threatening every guy on the street who looks at you funny. You are a very insecure individual.

It's not going to hurt for me to shop around a bit, and see if I can get a better rate. I will be upfront about the ticket, because obviously they will find out anyway. What is the chance that my current company will give me a better rate when I tell them I am thinking of cancelling my policy?

An ex girlfriend of mine used to live with a female friend of hers. They both got petty speeding tickets within a week of each other. They had the same insurance company, but different policies. Because they were in the same house, something to flagged for review by the insurance company. The company chose to cancel BOTH policies instantly.

Doesn't make sense to me, either, but there's a lot of bullshit in extortion --err, I mean insurance.
