What do you need the 64 GB of RAM for?

If you have endured with Q6600 this long and have limited budget, would you really both spend a lot money now and upgrade again soon? That would be change of behaviour. Save some money for unexpected repairs too, for you do know how computers can have problems, don't you?

Actually I got the 3820 to save 300 dollars, then Im going to buy Ivy Bridge E in Q3 of 2013.

If I got the 3930k I have no reason to upgrade to Ivy Bridge E ..... but I got a CPU where in a year or two if I get 100 percent usage when audio engine is on for sure Ill get the Ivy 6 core 12 threads. No point doing it now cuz then Ivy E comes out and Im stuck,,, I spent 600 dollars on CPU already I must keep it. But getting the 3820 ,, it will be a nice upgrade going to Ivy E hexacore. thx gl

I was kind of wondering that as well since we have no solid evidence that IB E will be on LGA 2011 or that it will even come out.

I already had the INTEL enthusiat guy worker for Intel tell me the 2011 socket will work with Ivy E and if it doesnt there will be a BIOS upgrade that will make it compatible.

a 2011 will last you long time - and unless Ivy E will push the evenlope to 8/16 core\thread there's no point in upgrading.

Secondly - unless your kaufmann' us all - I am extremely confused as to how you can be so daft as to not benchmark\monitor your damn usage of resources when using your old q6600?

Even the most extreme samplekits and VST based sample "synths" used 10 times - will never push any DAW above 16 GB.

It's good to have - especially to forcefully limit pagefile for longer in-storage in memory rather than having windows flush it to disk - but by no means a massive requirement.

Ivy-B E will most likely be the last incarnation of an extreme 2011 board(Atleast per current rumours) - so getting used to not OC'ing might not be a bad thing.

a 2011 atm - is a right choice for a DAW user that isn't efficient in cleaning up his "plugin\vst chain\usage".

I think tweakboy fits in that group very well.

See, I think that this is smart thinking. Invest in a platform, with an eye to the future, by purchasing a lower- (lowest-) end CPU for that platform, and then planning to upgrade to the highest-end (or just higher-end) CPU in the future, to max out your platform investment.

Sadly, if Intel follows through with their rumored BGA soldered-in CPU plans post-Haswell, then this will no longer be possible.

I followed this plan some time ago, with my P35 S775 boards. I purchased what was then a fairly high-end board based on the P35 chipset (GA-P35-DS3R v1.0), with cheap-as-chips CPUs (E2140), and overclocked them to as high as I could go, and then some years later, I dropped in some Q9300 Core2Quad CPUs, and overclocked them too, when they were being cleared out at Microcenter.

Good post MisterMac. As far as plugins vst DXi ,, I use Sonar X2 Producer x64 and all my plugins works even old ones like FM7 and Abynth series. Also my app has choice I took out check for check for new VStis on startup, My app launches in 3 seconds,,,

I'm happy for you that you are getting such a beastly platform. 2011 is a fully featured platform with all the stuff that you will need for a long time to come. Sata 3, PCI-E 3.0 with tons of lanes etc is all that is needed, so congrats. I look forward to the awe and surprise that you will feel when you experience the extreme performance of the new rig compared to your old one. Theres nothing like a huge upgrade, and you are certainly in for one huge ass upgrade.

Be a boss and get the 3930K. Go big or go home I say! I don't really agree with buying the platform out of a desire to go IB-E though. Ivy is such a small jump over Sandy that it just doesn't seem worth the upgrade to me. Maybe I'm just getting cheap though. I'd upgrade a SB to IB, but not a SB-E to IB-E.

I think you can probably rest 99.5% sure 2011 will support IB-E.

PS. 5Ghz is doable, but you'll need a lucky chip and really good cooling. Even on water these chips get pretty hot when you are overclocking.

Tweakboy, just a sanity-check question here - you know your app scales with core-count but do you know for certain that it strongly relies on the part of Intel's cores that are not present in AMD's?

What I mean is, have you any benchmark results comparing performance with a relatively inexpensive FX-8350 (8 integer cores) versus that of the considerably more expensive S2011 CPUs you are considering?

Your needs are very narrowly defined and based on a very specific application. I would caution you against using generalized benchmark data and generalized review results as the basis of your purchasing decision.

Make sure you really will see the best performance from the S2011 chips before diving into the purchase.

It shows inside app ,,,,, the CPU usage and theres 4 of them, now there will be 8 of them . Sonar X2 is HT app x64 . will love the quad channel and SSD caching . So anyhow on my last project I was @ 88 percent usage, then when it renders it uses all your cores.

Now things are going to be even bigger projects.. soo I needed this upgrade... thx

If you are using it for work, I'd just use stock speeds. No need to introduce unneeded instability into your workstation. I know I would hate to lose a day's work along with have to troubleshoot problems on my workstation.

Well if I leave the Intel Turbo thingie ON ,, the 3.6 becomes 3.9 I believe....
I wanna take it to 4.5Ghz by increasing the BLCK what vcore would I need to get 4.5 stable,,,,,,,, Im safe up to 1.450v thanks

Ya thanks Im not gonna overclock at first,,,,,, definietly just use the comp for a month or two stock,,,,,, make sure its stable then I will touch the voltage Ill put it to 1.40v what Mhz will that get me. All I want is 4.5Ghz stable as a rock
