Oh well, yes they are easier to throw, catch, and hold onto. NE is a better team either way but you get tired of the "advantages" NE takes. And contrary to some this isn't a grey area. This is the rule. They broke the rule. Minor one, yes, but yet another example of where Billacheat walks the grey line in everything and then is willing to go over the line when he thinks he can get away with it. Fantastic X&O guy, knows how to run a winning organization, was a couple plays away from 5-0 in Super Bowls, but he isn't very likable. And it isn't because he is gruff with the press but because of stuff like this. I like his persona but this stuff is stupid.

If this were...I don't know...the Buccs, no one would really care or think it was intentional. If it were just one or two of the balls, no one would really are or think it was intentional. I don't really care if they are punished (assuming they in fact broke the rules, which you are assuming is true). I consider this a de minimis offense that had no discernible effect on the outcome of the game. If the game had been decided by a field goal I might feel differently, but the Colts were just never remotely competitive.

No, I'm not assuming it is true at this point. I'll wait and see. But if it is true, I do feel sorry for Brady (someone will make this their sig, I know it!).

And I acknowledge that the Colts were going to lose regardless. However, if the Colts had cheated and lost, I'd still want them penalized. As I said earlier, the intention, not the outcome, is what is important.

Before each game, officials take balls from each team and approve them for use. They are separate from the designated K-balls, used on special-teams plays, which cannot be manipulated.

"The majority of people don't like throwing brand-new footballs, and that's why the change was made and Peyton was big on helping all the quarterbacks out with that," Rodgers said. "But if they're going to let us prep them the way we want them, I don't believe they should be able to take air out of the footballs."

I agree the NFL should supply the balls.

If it is found they deflated the balls, I don't think they should get the SB spot. Too bad the rules aren't written like that, though, so they are definitely going. The penalty is very, very light for the effect this can have on the game. I'd call the penalty a fucking joke, TBH. That being said, if they were going to cheat and break a rule, this is a good one since there's no significant consequence. I doubt any team would refuse to pay a few hundred thousand and a draft pick for a significantly better chance of getting into the SB.

I just don't get how the refs can handle the ball without noticing and yet some defensive player and equipment guy notice right away. According to some posters the difference is quite noticeable. Does that mean the NFL was complicit in the cheating?

Anyone else think it was irresponsible for the NFL to issue a press release that the balls were underinflated - causing a huge amount of speculation and controversy to result - without also releasing the EVIDENCE that someone on the Patriots was to blame and/or the coaching staff was aware of/orchestrated the issue?

Also - I find it incredibly implausible that the receiver felt a different in the weight of the ball, as reported. He might have felt a difference in the grip, compression, etc., but weight? I don't think so.

Are the refs ever squeezing the ball? If you were handling it like a ref does, you probably are holding it just tight enough to keep it from falling out of your hand. Not squeezing like a player does with the ball in play. Maybe it's not a noticeable difference to a ref.
