I am having a hard time caring about this even if it was done intentionally (and the jury is still out on that). Whatever benefit Brady enjoyed from the under inflated balls was also available to Luck.

I am not a Patriots fan but I find the butthurt coming from Pats haters endlessly entertaining . . .

agree 100%, that is the best part about all of this.

the ravens players coming out the woodwork a week late about this is my favorite of them all.

i know, and that was my point. the deflated balls had absolutely nothing to do with indy being able to put up 7 points in 60 minutes of football.

one will argue that the normal balls used by Indy were harder to pass and catch in the wet conditions vs the underinflated balls

however assuming the fact that they were all changed out at 1/2 time is true, so that all the balls were correct at that point, it does not change the fact that Indy rolled over in the 2nd half. when conditions at least on TV looked worse

So you don't think they should be punished for doing something illegal?

It's easy to scream "butthurt" and "haters" while ignoring the fact they broke the rules.

IMO they should only be punished if it can be proved they did it intentionally and or knew about it and didn't say anything

iunno....if it were any other team, maybe. But the Pats have a history of disregarding rules. They lost their "gee I didn't know" pass a while ago.

Here's a question:

The officials handle the ball every play of the game. They spot the ball and are often receiving a tossed ball from a player, or they pick it up themselves.

How could the officials, who have handled balls with the official inflation, for, I reckon, a long time, not recognize that the ball feels different? I mean, if it has enough difference for players to benefit, surely that translates to, "hmm, why does this ball feel just slightly easier to grip? seems to have a wee bit of give."

Continuing with the assumption

Indy did not notice/complain about the ball pressure.
The refs did not notice the ball pressure

No it was not. Each team has their own balls, its not like most sports where the Umps/Ref's control the balls. I did not know that till this thing popped up. Maybe they should change the rules that the Refs control the balls in the NFL and the teams just play.

Imagine in baseball each team has their own balls and if you want a new one you have to go to your dugout. Just seems dumb but that is how the NFL does it for some reason.

If that were the case then the Colts balls would also be underinflated the same.

A official checks out the balls then gives them to the teams. So they were the same when given out yet 11 of 12 of the Pats balls were not in regulation.

But yea if the game was won by a hair then you could make a case the colts should be in the SB. But it was a blowout. Brady and the rest of the starters could have been benched and drinking margaritas the 2nd half and still won.
Pats will lose some draft picks and get a fine, that's about it.

Maybe the Colts balls were underinflated as well? But since they lost no reason for anyone to point it out, etc. Just a thought.

Yep, and you're also correct in the the ball changes when possession changes.

The colts have their own balls, and so do the Pats.

Right, so someone does something wrong once, they should automatically be punished for anything they are accused of in the future. Ridiculous. 😀

I, for one, don't subscribe to the theory that an underinflated ball to the point that it's "illegal" would perform as well as a properly inflated one. Given the dynamic properties a properly inflated ball needs to hold its shape for aerodynamic reasons, or to bounce a certain way when kicked (e.g. it wouldn't travel far at all)...

Hmmm, they didn't kick much, did they? :hmm:

That's so strange. If there are all of these rules regarding the balls, then why are they not just supplied by the league? Pretty stupid way to handle things if you are going to have rules in place regarding how the balls should be treated.

Everybody knows you inflate footballs to the sidewall.

It's known that the Pats use older balls because they've been roughed up a bit, that was legal and no one said a damn thing about it.

You're right, it IS really stupid. The league should supply the balls for sure.

I did not know that the teams each have their own balls - that seems like a bad idea.

I don't really care if they are punished (assuming they in fact broke the rules, which you are assuming is true). I consider this a de minimis offense that had no discernible effect on the outcome of the game. If the game had been decided by a field goal I might feel differently, but the Colts were just never remotely competitive.

This is exactly how I feel about James Harden. He's got otherworldly levels of talent, he can shoot from anywhere, he can drive and create off the dribble... but he spends every other play flopping around like he's been shot with a berserk dart (that and his complete lack of effort on defense, although he's turning that around this year). But when you've got so much talent and you're clearly better than all but a couple people in the game, why resort to underhanded cheating tactics to win? You can win without it. The Patriots don't need to underinflate a football to win... so why bother? It's nonsensical.

For the same reason belicheat videotaped the 3-13 Lions to beat them a few years back. He'll do anything to win.

i think you should do whatever you can get away with. that's how all competition is. i also think they should be able to take all the drugs they want. you'd get faster recovery and even strong/faster guys. you should also be able to go after a guys knees/heads whatever. that's how you play as a kid. that's how you should be able to play as an adult. no fun league indeed.

You know the NFL is going to do things their way, period. Just supply a standard set for both teams to use, and balls for the kicking game.

Lay it to rest, right now.
