2Pac was one of the few rappers that actually have(had) talent. 2Pac had some words for all you Puff Daddy, Masta P listening fools. I believe it was "Fuk all y'all!"

<sigh>. I hate it when people accuse others of being close-minded just because of their musical tastes. I, for one, don't listen to much music anymore, outside of when I'm driving. And even then, it's mainly just a classic rock station. I went to a Half Price Books store the other week and sold over half of my cd collection, just because I hadn't listened to most of them for years. I also happen to dislike most rap/hiphop. Like that mosdef guy said (The real guy, the one in the article that someone linked to) most of the songs are just about money, women, and ME ME ME ME. Anyway, that's my opinion. That doesn't make me close-minded, it just makes my tastes different than yours.

And as far as Tupac's poetic talent, I'll say what I've said a couple times already in this thread. Based on the sample given in the first post in this thread (the "I cry" song), Tupac was not much of a poet. Now, I'm far from an expert on poetry, but that has the distinct feel of a poem that you'd see in the back of a middle school yearbook.

Engine - This "I Cry" Song isn't a song! It's a poem. Pac wrote pages and pages of poetry, which not too many people know about.

<< You guys should learn to accept that other people may have different opinions and values.. >>

I will accept opinions, there's nothing wrong with that. But I don't tolerate blatant ignorance (not so much demonstrated by you per se) shown in statements such as "Pac was talentless".

<< Knee jerk reactions are bad for your stress levels >>

Yeah and people insulting the culture I love is even worse for my stress level.

And this was no "needless confrontation", you insulted something I take great pride in, period. I found it offensive and I reacted plain and simple. I'm sure KV and mosdef will back me up on that one.

<< I happen to love Bob Dylan's singing and you did not see me go ballistic when he was made fun of in two threads some time ago >>

Yeah people don't dedicate entire threads to make fun of him now do they? No one around here blatantly mocks your culture and I expect the same in return: As Demonstrated Right Here

And dennil, the "Talent doesn't equal record sales" thing, I wholeheartedly agree with. Some of the best rappers are barely known unfortunately. But Pac didn't try appealing to a certain demographic, and this was way before white suburbanites became a huge chunk of rap sales. So I can honestly say he sold his records off of his content and not his image, because things were different back then. But most definitly: Record Sales do NOT equal talent

I chose not to participate in that thread. As for being mocked, I am a French Canadian, so there have been threads attacking both aspects of my culture.

Canadians

Eh?

Me

Yet I take them with a grain of salt.

And once again, I did not say he was talentless. I said I saw more talent in my students. You saw this as an insult and reacted. You're entitled to a reaction. I am sure that the people who admired Al Capone similarly felt insulted when addressed by people who admired Elliot Ness, even if the latter expressed their disapproval of that criminal's behaviour and popularity in polite terms. Yet I did not address the unsuitability of a gangsta rapper as role model for misguided youngings, I just politely expressed my opinion of Tupac's poetry. That hardly qualifies as an attack.

Title: I Wish

I wish, I wish, I wish
To every city
I wish, I wish, I wish
Every hood
I wish, I wish, I wish
And every block
I wish, I wish, I wish
Good Ol' America!

Rollin' through the hood
Just stopped by to say what's up
Came to let you know
That your baby boy ain't doing so tough
And even though you passed
Going on four long years
Still waking up late at night crying tears
Just thinking about those days
You used to talk to me
Smilin' while I'm sippin' on this Hennesy
And remember we bragged on how rich we would be
To get up out this hood was like a fantasy

And now you hear my songs the radio is bangin'
Oh I can't believe my ears
And what everybody's sayin'
And boy I'll tell you
Folks don't know the half
I would give it all up
Just to take one ride

(With you)
How I used to kick it on the front porch
(With you)
And how I used to lay back and smoke weed
(With you)
And all the little days and party joints we'd do
Now I'm just missing you
How I wish

I wish that I could hold you now
I wish that I could touch you now
I wish that I could talk to you
Be with you somehow
I know you're in a better place
And you know I can see your face
I know you're smiling down on me
Saying everything's okay
And if I never leave this thug life
I'll see you again someday
I wish, I wish, I wish
I wish, I wish, I wish

Now ever since this money come
Been nothing but stress
Sometimes I wish I could trade in my success
Y'all look at me and say boy you've been blessed
But y'all don't see the inside of my unhappiness
Man I swear this sh*t gets heavy like a ton
That's why you hear me shootin'
This real sh*t off like a gun
Hmm I wonder how my friends would treat me now
If I wasn't iced up with a Bentley and a house
That's why fake ass niggas get fake ass digits
And fake ass playas get a real playa hatin' 'em
Honey Love goes platinum and y'all ass come around
But y'all don't wanna raise the roof
Until my sh*t is going down

And now you hear my songs the radio is bangin'
Oh I can't believe my ears
And what everybody's sayin'
And boy I'll tell you
Folks don't know the half
I would give it all up
Just to take one ride

(With you)
How I used to hoop off in them tournaments
(With you)
And how I used to club hop on weekends
(With you)
Your family called the morning of the tragic end
Damn, my condolensces

I wish that I could hold you now
I wish that I could touch you now
I wish that I could talk to you
Be with you somehow
I know you're in a better place
And you know I can see your face
I know you're smiling down on me
Saying everything's okay
And if I never leave this thug life
I'll see you again someday
I wish, I wish, I wish
I wish, I wish, I wish

Voices in my head be telling me to come to church
Saying the Lord is the only way for you to stop the hurt
Dreaming of windows black tinted like a hurst
When waking up to life sometimes seems worst
And all I ever wanted is to be a better man
And I try to keep it real with my homies now
For me to save the world I don't understand
How did I become the leader of a billion men?

And now you hear my songs the radio is bangin'
Oh I can't believe my ears
And what everybody's sayin'
And boy I'll tell you
Folks don't know the half
I would give it all up
Just to take one ride

(With you)
How I used to street perform on Friday
(With you)
And how I used to go to church on Easter Sunday
(With you)
Standing here throwing them songs at me
Somebody pray for me

I wish that I could hold you now
I wish that I could touch you now
I wish that I could talk to you
Be with you somehow
I know you're in a better place
And you know I can see your face
I know you're smiling down on me
Saying everything's okay
And if I never leave this thug life
I'll see you again someday
I wish, I wish, I wish
I wish, I wish, I wish

I'm sorry and do not wish to insult anyone but it does not seem that good to me. It's OK I suppose. But that's just my subjective opinion based on a different life experience and different values.

I like R. Kelly and all, but I gotta agree with Dennil on this one, that wasn't anything special lyrically.

<< You saw this as an insult and reacted >>

Because it was an insult. When you say someone such as Pac has less talent than your students - that qualifies as an insult. I hardly see that as an opinion but rather a slam on PAc. But I'm not going to drag this out - you insulted him plain and simple and we'll leave it at that.

Ok then. I officially and sincerely apologize for my inappropriate choice of words. I will endeavour to be more open and sensitive in the future.

You might want to articulate your position to this black reporter on a major Toronto television network who, coincidentally, also posted today some words about Tupac that you will probably find offensive. She might broadcast your point of view for a balanced treatment of the subject. I warn you, hers are strong unflattering words.

...but I find it amazing how rappers have become so consumed with rampant materialism, and how important they believe it is to push this lifestyle through their videos or interviews. Not a month goes by that I don't open I open the pages of Vibe or The Source magazine to find another rapper grinning with $20,000 worth of gold teeth.

Wow, how classy.

Instead of putting all of that money toward your teeth or the maintenace of those SUVs, I've got a better suggestion for some members of the rap community.

Spend that money on some newspaper and magazine subscriptions so you can think of something else to talk about rather than the "good" life, whatever that may be, and educate your younger fans about something more than the importance of being the "illest."

heh....w3rd.

Red, you see, its ignorant statements like that that is exaclty what genocide, mosdef, and i are talking about. i dont even want to dignify that with a reply defending because i dont consider your standpoint to be logical.

dennil, i read that article, and i agree 75% with what she said. i dont like rappers to be talkin about money all the time, thats why i dont credit rappers like jay z, cash money, no limit for their lyrical talent. i credit them for rappin with a unique style to uniqe beats. now if she mentioned people like Dead Prez, or The roots, i would have emailed her indefinitly.

as far as tupac goes, just because he is a "rolemodel" doe NOT mean that he has to change who he is. and pac did not WANT to show any weakness, he was a thug. he had to remain solid, and cold. that is why you never see too many of his poems published.

btw, dennil, i didnt know you listened to mobb deep :D
