I think the restrictions start at 630am don't they ? Just tell him to go in earlier. Strike a deal with the boss to leave early too.

wow amazing story of greed. just amazing.

i really can not beleive they want a 8% raise every year for 3 years! wow.

I hope they get fired. Crap like this is one reason i hate unions.

And now, the entire city of New York and its surrounding areas all hate unions. Unbelievable that they pull this $hit a week before the holidays. :| I really hope they don't think they're gaining any form of public support from this little stunt.

Basically, the way the public sees it - they are screwing millions of people who rely on public transportation to function - people who are now basically immobilized. Millions can't get to work, or anywhere for that matter. They are essentially taking the holidays away from those who must travel to be with loved ones.
They did a poll of NY'kers on Fox 5 news and only 66% of us are against unions. WTF ?! Are 33% union members or family members ? WTF ?!

About gaining public support - the union president in his "let's strike" speech basically closed with "let's show the MTA that the TWU (union) does not stand alone". So they are hoping to gain support from us. He also cited the reasons for us to back them should be that they stood for the public in the past asking to keep token booths open, conductors on the trains, and no fare hikes. Gee, I wonder if any of those were self-serving at all... :|

Good luck gaining public sympathy and support with their outrageous contract demands and walking out on the job that is so crucial to the city.

You know what general trend I've noticed? The more educated (or educated-sounding when interviewed on TV / radio) the person, the less support for the union and its demands.

I really hope this thing lasts for at least a week. No subway working means no people to work with. All this = little work

i dont think they are being greedy at all. 55k is really not alot when you are in the city. Its like the equivalent of 30k most anywhere else in the country.

just got back from 47th and lex. it wasn't so bad, i took local instead of the expressway, took about an hour! restrictions started at 5 am ending at 11 am and 2pm to 8pm.

if they strike just for one day, it will take another day just to set up and time up the trains again.

I was there on travel last week. Left on Friday. Wasn't sure how I was going to get t othe airport if they striked, but had a few options (including walking as a last resort).
That said, was glad they didn't strike that day, figured as much.

Sorry about the greedy union holding the city hostage.

55k however isn't exactly crying poverty either. Its survivable income from one parent in a family, or a single person.

Demanding a 24% pay increase over 3 years (I think it's been lowered to 18%), retiring at 50 with only 20 years on the job for full pension benefits, is greedy in my mind. Most jobs in both private and public could only wish for such bonuses.

Exactly. Its just not in line with reality. There is absolutely no way on this god forsaken planet that you can convince me that a token booth clerk is worth 50k a year, when they keep on rising the fare every couple of years.

Nobody in the city supports this union. Its not the MTA thats militant here. They are already overpaid, and they want SIX PERCENT A YEAR (at least double inflation), and retire at 50 with full pension? Are they out of their god damn mind?

I hope the MTA starts training replacements today. It might be different if the workers have proven to be of the highest caliber.

But I can say in general that MTA workers are the least helpful, most worthless people in the world. I dont think Ive ever seen a smile on a single workers face in 20 years, and times square STILL smells like piss, like it always has, and always will.

Heh, I just heard a guy interviewed live describing the union as being one of the toughest unions around, "they don't take any s***". Live, no bleep. The reporter was a bit embarrassed. Overall, the sentiment on TV seems to be neutral to anti-union, though they had one idiot talking about how the union should be comended for fighting for benefits and liveable wages. WTF? These guys have the best freaking benefits in the City as it is.

I feel just as bad for the kid(s) of the parent(s) who are in the union and DON'T want to strike. They interviewed a few people in the union who thinks it's just as dumb.

So much for the contingency plan!

My wife is a public school teacher who had to make her way from our Manhattan apartment to the Bronx. Two taxicabs refused to take her to there (a violation according to the TLC passenger rights) and the third cab would only take her for $45! So much for the "zone rules", which should have limited the charge to $15-20. Absolutely ridiculous.

I'm hearing cabs are picking up multiple fares too.

BTW, my wife just called me ... she walked an hour from Penn Station to work. It's what... 20F right now too. "Sorry for doing this" my @$$.
