whenever i tip in cash, i make sure i fill in 0.00 as the tip, and fill in the total as well. that way, they can't screw with you
If I were gonna screw you, I'd just add a 1 to the front of your 0.00.
People that do this are gonna do it regardless.
And that would be credit card fraud, which is a felony in most states.
Well, yea. That is the point of the OP. They committed fraud by writing some amount in the tip section.
Um, no. You need to read the thread again.

Umm, no. .. I just read the OP again. It said that they added a tip to his bill without agreement. That is a fraud.

Ok in bold:
So basically i went to this place called Lyons for dinner with a friend. I paid the bill, it was $30. She put in 5 bucks (a 5 dollar note) on the table and we left. 15% of $30 is $4.5.. now i see i got a bill for 34.46 on my online statement.
grrrr... so basically they tipped themselves $9.46 holy sh*t!
So, if they wrote in 5 dollars on the tip section of his credit card receipt that he signed, not in his presence, without his agreement - then this is fraud.

To the people that say restaurants are adding 15% when they run your card, who gives them the right to do that? They arent owed a tip, they have no right to authorise more than whats printed on the check. YOU, as a customer, make the choice, not them. And is running more on a card than whats printed even legal? I dont see any small print on any place ive eaten say that, unless its a big party or something.

Why are you refusing to read the thread and stop making a fool of yourself?
At least the OP has the excuse of not being online when this was explained. You on the other hand have ALL the info in front of you, but refuse to read it.

While i think you are right that this is just a authorization type deal it does happen. I took some friends to Ruby Tuesday a few years back. The service was really bad. It took the girl 45 min to just bring us drinks then another 20 to get the dinner oder for us! She then screwed up the order and we had to beg another waitress to get us the tab so we could get out.
the bill came to $60 something and change. I scratched out the tip part of the receipt and just paid the bill amount.
We did throw down a few dollers on the table.
We left. The next day we notice that they had a $70 amount from ruby Tuesday. WE called the bank and they said its just a pre-authorization it will be right in a day or two. So we waited a week and it never went down.
WE called the bank back and they said that is what they submitted it for. So we called ruby Tuesday at first we got the run around from the manager. Then i got the regional manager involved. He went to the store and looked up the receipt. It showed $10 tip in the tip part (in different ink) with a slash through it.
He asked me and the wife to come in for a free dinner while there he gave me a $50 gift card to Ruby Tuesday also plus credited my card back the $10.

Only time I seen this is when you have 5 or more in a group.

The same thing happened to me when I went to Red Lobster. The waitress gave herself a very gerenerous tip. I contacted the manager of the restaurant and they gave me a giftcard with the amount she took. But I did not want the amount she took, I wanted her to get in BIG trouble because she shouldn't be messing with people's signed credit card slip. I contacted the main office and they just gave me another giftcard.
But I do know that if your group is 8 or more, it is required to leave at least 15% tip. And I also know that some servers will automatically add that to the bill hoping you won't notice and give them double tip.

It STILL amazes me that people are refusing to read the thread and understand the difference between the wrongly assumed fraud the OP is claiming, and a very common pre-authorization that shows up as "pending" until the real charge comes through.

And it still amazes me how you assume the OP's charge is a pre-authorization charge and loudly proclaim it as such without knowing for sure.
So far as I know, pre-authorization charges do not show up on the monthly bill. If a pre-authorization charge does show up on a monthly bill, it is time to get a new credit card from a different bank.
now i see i got a bill for 34.46 on my online statement

sometimes people post before they read the whole thing. which is likely the longer the thread becomes.
