I travel about 5-6 months out of the year. Just about every month I have 1-2 add ons to my credit cart. It is usually by changing a tip number from a 4.00 to a 6.00 or something like that. They change them and bet that the person is not going to call since it is only 2 bucks, and when you do call they say it was a mistake, or they couldnt ready your hand writing. One manager told me it happens quite a bit and they have fired people for it. So it may be a pre charge thing but it happens where a wait staff member will bump the tip up. Just check against your statement and call the store.

If the charge is still there after a day or two so you can be sure it's not the preauthorization thing, then call the CC company and dispute the entire charge. Then contact the restaurants corporate office and let them know that you may be starting a class action lawsuit for fraud against them.

Then sit back and see what happens.

Or if you don't want to do the work, see if you know anyone else that has had this happen to them at the same restaurant and then let the local news stations know about it.

I've never had a problem, but I'm always wary about people cheating me out on the tip. If I leave a tip of any amount (or 0.00 for a cash tip), I always add my own dollar sign to it, even if it's there is a pre-printed dollar sign on the bill. That way, they can't squeeze any numbers in. I also always add the cents, so they can't tack that on either.

Speaking of annoying tip tactics, The Olive Garden automatically adds the tip to the bill. After paying it, they come back with your CC and a tip receipt (er... whatever it's called) with a lines that reads "Additional tip:". I was thinking, WTF is that!?!? It's clearly there to trick customers to double-dip on the tip. My gf paid that day and she didn't notice it.

Having said all that, I think I undertipped last night. It was a 17% tip, but they gave us an extra plate of raw seafood when the squid inked our original plate.

it probably says... 15% gratuity added to your bill.
Its not illegal, and yes many of the finer dining places do it.

Yes, but that is usually for larger parties. Where I work if it is 8 or more people we have the option (don't have to though, if they look like they will tip sometimes I leave the grat off) of putting a 15% gratuity on the ticket. This is just in place to protect the servers, because there are MANY people out there who would be more than happy to leave $5 on a $200 ticket.

Look at the reciept before you sign... Hmmm What else a 4.96 tip is ****** imo. I alwasy tip out 15% if the service is just ok. 20% is the norm. Unless that server did a horrible job. You really should try to be a waiter and your views will surely change.
