This is fscked up... restaurants adding added tip to your credit card billl

A lot of times they run the total plus 15% to make sure the credit line is good. Than they go back and settle up later. Wait a few days and check online again before you jump to any conclusions.

if you signed for $30, it should be illegal. no company should arbitrarily tag on any amount for whatever they want. Have them refund it or dispute. That is shady. All restaurants I have been to have a slot under the actual bill where you write in the amount you wish to tip

Um the thing you sign is the receipt of the visa charges... unless you mean they make two charges... one for the food, then when you leave, they charge again for the tip. If so, that's highly illegal.

you need to eat out at other places then McDonalds.

they bring the reciept out for you to sign. it has a slot for Tip that you put in (i always put zero because i tip in cash) then they can go back and redo it.

as i said i have had it happen twice. Wich is why i keep the copy of the reciept to dispute the charge.

Bingo!! Many places that accept tips automatically add 15% when the card is ran to make sure that the credit is available. Most likely when the charge is actually finalized it will have the correct amount.....

This happened to me the other month at a really nice restaurant. The extra amount was in there on the total that had not been confirmed yet on the website page. Once the charge got out of the "hold" or confirm stage, the total was set back down to the correct amount so I would assume this happened in your case.

Assuming the OP's memory is right, which it probably is, then of course something happened which raised the total amount. Checks could have been swapped, the wrong card could have been tipped, the $5 cash could have disappeared and the waitress might have felt wronged or the company might have some shady policy.

This is all a moot point. It doesn't matter how it happened. OP needs to call the restaurant, explain the situation and will probably get a fix. If not, avoid that restaurant and file a credit card dispute.

The bill was for two people on a business trip that should only have included one person. Leaving a cash tip, and paying part of the bill in cash, was a way to reduce the overall bill in an attempt to bring it back down to a single serving so the accountants would not ask why the bill was so large for a "single" person. We forgot to ask for separate bills when we arrived.

This is the correct answer.

So many of you are throwing a fit over nothing at all.

Come back in a week or two and tell us what the real charge is. Not what the pre-approved charge amount is that happens to be showing up within a day or two of the charge.

It's a matter of ignorance. The amount he sees showing up online right now is the PRE-APPROVAL the restaurant sent in. That is NOT the final amount debited from his account.
