Take it from a guy who's been there (I spent a TON upgrading my first MTB, a 1991 Bridgestone MB-3) - these kinds of incremental upgrades will drain your pocket, add only minimal performance benefits, and add nothing much to the bike's value. Deore will shift nearly as well as anything out there, and you are better off saving your money for the next bike if you really get into mountain biking.

I hear ya, The wheelset I'm justifying by putting road tires on one of the sets so I can do some more paved riding, and the sram set....well I just gotta spend it on something:D

Formerly GripShift. It's a twist-grip shifter instead of a trigger-shifter for mountain bikes. I personally love them as your hands are always firmly on the grips, they're light, and have very few moving parts.

SRAM shifter

Basically, you twist and take up cable. Twist the other way and release cable. Very simple.

This is my old bike from my biking days...
The guy I sold it to has done some "changes" like new cranks (replaced my white industries) and a new stem (replaced Core)

This was the Schwinn's fist foray back into "Real" bikes... the Schwinn Homegrown USA. Bike was 99% USA build (derails and chain only 2 things not USA)

Was freaking amazing piece of Yeti-Built machinary.

Someday Ill buy it back from him... I miss the girl.

I see how it grips around the handles but what is that thing sticking out at the bottom?

Personally I can't stand sram shifters...

Here's my old mountain bike, a mongrel based off of a 1998 Gary Fisher Paragon frame:

dude... you left your headlights on? (that is my venerable Niterider Nighthawk, the first production microprocessor-controlled bicycle lighting system)

rear derailleur and cassette Maybe not high-end, but it's paid for :(

closeup of crankset This is my old "full-size-drive" XTR crankset. They'll pry it from my COLD DEAD FINGERS  Laser-etched 6-4 titanium spindle bolt.

The drivetrain just got a scrub in the bathtub... most of it is so worn that it should be thrown away, along with the ol' 747 pedals, but I don't have the funds to replace 'em right now. Here's what it looked like before and after cleaning. :Q *flees from Brutuskend*

I'm not crazy about them. I use an XT Rapid Fire + pod for my rear shifting, and a Suntour XC-Pro thumbshifter (circa 1991) for the front.

I've got a Terranaut my buddy gave me. He says it's from the late 80s/early 90s. They any good? No pics of it at the moment.

I don't like the grip shift but they have trigger shifters let ya shift up and down with just your thumb, and also have a 1:1 ration instead of Shimano's 2:1 ratio I'm gonna test the feel out at a shop here this week see how much I like it. I rode my friends gripshift and I really didn't like it much:p
