I'd post mine, but you would all laugh at me :(

I have an old 1996 Murray "Ultra-Terrain" that I got at WalMart for around $90. Hey - it rolls and the chain stays on :)

Anyway, I am looking to upgrade to a "real bike" - I could use your input in

Then the scary part comes. Going downhill you go so fast, even if you don't pedal. Of course I slow myself down so I hit the brakes every 20 seconds or so, so that I don't build up too much speed. The downside to this of course is you wear down your brake pads really fast.

I am not sure how people do it. I go down maybe 3-4 blocks and get scared. Imagine going down 7 miles or so of a fire road.

Brakes just slow you down!!!!!!

I don't get what you are saying here. My primary fear of going downhill is the speed.

Sygyzy, Just an old car racing phrase, although it is quite a rush to decend at 30mph, tucked down and knees on the top tube!!!!! Note I don't do this all the time but once in a while is FUN!!!!!!
You'll see after you've done it once.

Fun til a rabbit or some rodent runs out into the road, or you hit a pot hole, or a car comes into the road. Next thing you know you are flying over the handle bars down the mountainside ... to your death.

That's why I only do it on roads I know, we have a park not to far from home that has a BIG hill, I love to decend that on .......it's safe. Bad part is coming back up, I try to do it without getting out of the saddle. One day you will decide to go for it, believe me

I swear I'll take some pics tomorrow. Today was nuts; I basically picked up the kidlet and looked after her until my wife got home and then hauled ass out the door to catch the Thurs training ride.

My wife would mock me mercilessly if I were to go out to the shed with a camera at this time of night to take pics for my intarweb friends.

Eh....you just can't worry about that stuff too much. Make sure you bike is in good working order before you venture into the mountains and then have at it. I love downhills....I've actually hit 60mph coming down one of the gaps in north GA (the one in the Mario vid actually....one side of it is freaking steep). :D

Epic ride

Can't wait to ride it this weekend.

Nice!

I've tried it many times on the trail. It feels like a hardtail on the flats, so it's quick. I would personally go all out either way. Pure FS or pure Hardtail.

My team's main bike sponsor is Specialized....I may have to pester the manager for a deal on a new mountain bike next year as mine is getting rather long in the tooth.

Sure. Just move to Atanta, join the team, race, kick ass, and then reenlist for next year. I'm sure Pete (the owner) would hook you up. :p

Speaking of which, he's got a Roubaix built up at the shop in my size. Said I could take it out for a spin. That makes me happy in that funny way like when I was climbing the rope in gym class.
