What's the missing 1%? 😉 They were so accurate that the announcement was anti-climactic.

Even the claims that the A6 pic leaks were bull proved to be wrong.
The one thing I was a bit surprised about was that the cable is not USB 3. 🙁

wow, you live in a terrible ATT area.

My highest speed that I've gotten with 4G (HSPA+) is about 3.5-4 Mbps. The .2 Mbps was while at work, so I only had 2-3 bars and was in a building. But yeah... the comparison between his LTE speed with ~3 bars and mine with a similar signal on AT&T was the final nail in the coffin.

As others have said, a device with only one NAND chip wouldnt be able to reach USB 3 speeds anyway so whats the point?
In the very least, faster charging. As I mentioned elsewhere, USB 2's 500 mA power limitation leaves something to be desired.

My Nexus 7 takes forever to charge on USB 2, and my iPad 2 doesn't charge at all on USB 2.

If you plug an iPhone into an iPad charger, it draws more than 500ma...
An iPad charger is not really a true USB 2 port. It's a charger.

If you have a standard USB 3 port on your computer, it would provide much more power to a USB 3 device than a standard USB 2 port would.

On new Macs, their USB 2 ports can provide more than 0.5 A, but that's because they're overspec'd.

As are plenty of mainboards today. But I don't charge from my PC - I charge from the wall.

Yes, but it's hit and miss, because it's a non-standard implementation.

But I don't charge from my PC - I charge from the wall.
I'd rather have the option for both. There are times when it makes sense for the device to be plugged into a computer, and it would be much preferred if the thing actually charged when it was plugged in.

This is not such a big deal with the iPhone, but it is potentially a much bigger deal for future iPads, including the iPad mini.

Wait, are the LTE data plans more expensive?? What do you mean by $30 more per month?

With Verizon you are now required to get a Shared Plan even if you are on a single line/single device plan. The cheapest plan is then $100 a month. He's paying $70 to AT&T.

If I had LTE I'd consider paying for the upgrade mid-contract but I don't and there's not enough to justify the cost for a bigger screen a faster CPU. I should have LTE by the time the 5S comes out so I'll like buy a second hand 5 then and keep my unlimited data on VZW.

Yeah. That's partly because I have a $17.50 discount with AT&T that I would lose if I went to Verizon.

My iPad2 charges just fine on a USB 2 port. You sure it's not charging? It does have to be in sleep mode to charge, but it does charge.

I would ask Verizon this, but I wouldn't be surprised if I get a more reliable answer here - my wife has a Verizon account, and she will be upgrading to an iPhone 5. I have an AT&T account, and I will be joining her Verizon account and getting an iPhone 5. Do I need to pre-order from Verizon to do this, or can Apple handle it?

They didnt mention un-subsidized pricing for iPhones.
Well, they don't have to. If it carries the same subsidized pricing it carries the same unsubsidized. It would be huge news if the carriers were eating more than $450 per phone on a full upgrade. They already have enough complaints about what they already take off for two year contracts.

Apple can. The online sites are set up to handle add-a-lines for all the carriers as well as new lines and upgrade lines. You simply input your information (wifes SSN, phone number, security info) and it asks you the relevant questions. When it arrives the IMEI/MEID is already activated on her account and the Set Up menu will activate the phone on the network, you just need WiFi.

Correct. Get it from AT&T and your FAN discount will remain untouched. Otherwise you will have to go through the process to have it re-added and backdated during the two months it takes to "process"

I retained my FAN discount and acquired my phone from Apple last year when I got my 4S

My wife an I currently have iPhone 4, my daughter has a 3GS and my mother-in-law a 3G - all are out-of-contract.

I see a bigger screen, better cameras, LTE, a little more battery life and a new connector and I am not overwhelmed with the need to get the 5. Though new is nice, I do not see a reason to spend an extra $200 for two iPhone 5 over two iPhone 4S's (in fact, the new connector is a major negative for me as I would have to replace some accessories I use every day).

So, I am thinking that my wife and I get two 4S's and my daughter and mother-in-law get our old iPhone 4.

Did I mis anything that should cause me to reevaluate my position?

The 5 is so non-compelling that I'm looking to go to a SG3. With all of the money and resources that Apple has, this is the best they could come out? I'm even more disappointed with iOS6.

I was close to going all Apple was close to buying a MBA, iPad and IP5. Now, I think I'm done with Apple for the time being. Makes me wonder if this will be the start of their downfall.

If you have an unlimited plan ATT will give you 5GB before you get throttled which is a big plus for some.

I see the hardware as the tools to access the ecosystem, which I like. I am sticking with Apple for now.

I don't really see what else they could have added?

Wider screen? I'd like that but only if it marginally increased the width. I would never get a 4.5-4.6 inch screen because they are ridiculously sized imo. NFC? don't really care about that until it is widely adopted.

To me it seems silly to spend the money on a new phone and only have 3G service. LTE is so much nicer. That would be the main selling point for me of the iPhone 5 vs the 4S.

Exactly. The biggest selling point for me is LTE. IMO, the 4S was perfect with the exception of no LTE. Now with the iPhone 5, I have LTE, improved cameras (panorama is also cool), and a faster processor. The bigger screen is "meh," to me. I actually like the size of the 4S. But all-in-all, I really don't need anything else. The iPhone 5 is perfect to me.

I guess my biggest thing is if you are "upgrading" to 2 4s's for 99 each vs 2 5's for 199 each is that you are upgrading to old tech and locked in for 2 more years.

I would never sign a new contact on something that is already a older model.

Over the next 2 years basically it would cost you 8.33 a month just to get the 5's over the 4s's.

And Ronnie Lott is the man, my HS football number 🙂.
