Finally got around to watching the presentation video - what a let down compared to when Jobs was at the helm. I was disappointed they didn't finish off with "Oh..and 1 more thing" [I think a lot of people were hoping for the ipad mini]. The technical specs/how it's made part of the presentation was interesting though...

The company I work for will be replacing our Crackberry 9000 with iphone 5's [they offered us the choice of BlackBerry Bold 9930, or Samsung Galaxy S3] - I went with the Iphone 5 simply because I already have a lot of apps [games] from when I had an ipad and I have no reason to use crackberry messenger anymore [the wife upgraded to a windows 7 phone provided from work]. Unfortunately I think the camera will either be disabled or not physically installed [our current 2 year old Crackberries do not have cameras installed due to paranoia from a customer we support - Intel]. 🙁

In every place that I've been that allowed Personal Electronic Devices, we had to go through some quick training that essentially said no WiFi sharing, photo/video capture, or plugging into your machine.

A lot of people I know with iphone 4's and a few people here have reported that their 4 is getting sluggish. Why is that? Wasn't it blazing fast 2 years ago? There's only been one iOS update since then. And my friends are non-jailbreakers.

I'm just curious because I have a 4S, and wondering if that's going to turn into a slow piece of crud in 10 months and make me upgrade again. I currently don't plan on upgrading, I can't imagine needing to pay another couple hundred dollars for an upgrade over the 4S when it already does everything I could imagine needing it for.

Mine is only sluggish because it has jailbroken software running in the background. :/

The iPhone 4 was never "fast" when it came out. It was a helulalot better than my 3G, but it was still somewhat slow. The single-core CPU just can't handle the load well, which is why I never bought an iPad first gen, and waited until it got dual-core (and more RAM).

However, IMO, despite that, the iPhone 4 was the best phone out there at the time IMO, so I bought it. And then with the update to the next gen OS, the iPhone 4 got a bit slower.

---

The iPhone 4S had the dual-core CPU I've wanted forever, but I wasn't going to upgrade after a year, esp. for a phone with a 3.5" screen and no LTE.

never gone one of those.

If you don't work for a place with sensitive information (customer secrets, government stuff, R&D, etc.), then you probably have no reason to have one in place. The worst part has to be working for a place where you can't even have a phone. Imagine trying to setup a lunch with someone who doesn't have e-mail access when your phone is way out in some bin... it's pretty annoying. 😛

I work in a hospital with tons of confidential information. I don't deal with that. There's a small form people sign to have emails on their smartphone and some other papers, but that's it. Everyone has their phone and other gadgets still.

I actually work in a federal facility and am allowed both my work phone and personal phone. I am a contractor, so plug my phones into my laptop to charge, but I have seen plenty of the govt employees do the same. I have been through the same IA/PII training that they have.

Now my friend? No personal electronic device allowed in the building at all. I don't even think he can take in a walkman.

I assume that part of being hospital staff is to keep patient information private as it is. Controlling PEDs in a hospital would be hell as people at the hospital would most likely want their devices on them.

Whether you're allowed to plug in a PED would probably depend on your IA rules or just the way IT setup the machines. Before my previous job disallowed PEDs in the building, we could plug devices into our PCs and even transfer files. You really weren't supposed to use personal thumb drives, but no one cared too much. I mean... you could always just e-mail yourself the files to get around a thumb drive restriction.

We were allowed to have radios at my previous job, but I think that was it, and when I say radios that's all they could be! 😛 If it had any storage on it at all, it was not allowed.

Huge news - Apple confirms iPhone 5 won't do simultaneous voice and LTE data on CDMA networks:

http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/13/...t-do-simultaneous-voice-and-lte-data-on-cdma/

It's "not yet possible" to do side-by-side CDMA voice and LTE data on a "single-radio" design like the iPhone 5, she says. That's technically true, although it may be a case of Apple wanting to keep hardware differences to a minimum between CDMA and GSM users. AnandTech founder Anand Lal Shimpi tells the New York Times that Verizon phones like the Galaxy S III, which don't have this limit, follow a different approach: where Apple uses a second antenna to improve overall reception for a single connection, Samsung and other phone makers use theirs to keep both data and voice flowing in harmony. While it's a tradeoff with its own benefits, the choice means that iPhone 5 units for Verizon, Sprint, and every other CDMA carrier still won't let you check your e-mail in mid-call without WiFi. If that's an issue, you'll have to turn to AT&T (or T-Mobile with an unlocked phone) to get your fix.

I'm wondering just how much using that second antenna improves voice quality. Does that mean the voice quality is bad on the Galaxy S III? Sounds like baloney to me. Was really looking forward to that feature with 4G LTE on Verizon 🙁

I thought Verizon required that all phones have a second antenna for receive diversity?

http://www.anandtech.com/show/4163/verizon-iphone-4-review/2

If so, then the SGS3 wouldn't be using 2 antennas, but rather 3+. If it was only using 2 antennas, then it couldn't have both LTE and CDMA w/receive diversity at the same time.

Maybe it uses two for receive diversity until you want to talk and use data at the same time? Seems like an odd approach, but it might work.

EDIT:

I considered the LTE vs. voice issue, and it might be a bit of an annoyance, but I since I rarely talk on my phone, it shouldn't be a problem. I only used ~10 minutes this month, and I can only recall a few times where I used my cellular (not WiFi) data connection while talking on the phone and that's over about three years.

Got one at Apple. It took like 10-15 minutes for the store to go live though. I heard people got it on the Apple Mobile App right before or at 12 pacific. The mobile app is always faster, but I like to make these purchases through a desktop.

You arent worried about the FAN discount getting removed?

worked when I tried Chrome I was able to order at like 3:14. App Store kept asking for my Apple Password and then hanging and firefox and safari kept saying the store will be up soon.

Chrome worked fine though.

Nah, I forgot to call att 🙂o) but everyone at macrumors said that theirs worked fine in the past. Some sort of issue that they apparently (mostly?) fixed. Ill get em to reapply it if they do actually remove it though.

I am still trying to get AT&T page to work. Im not worried about the FAN discount too much but I am ordering the phone on a different line than I am upgrading, and I know from past issues that ordering from Apple causes a headache when trying to activate.

Something about them "burning in" the phone number to the phone or IMEI or something.

Ill wait for this to stop at AT&T:
