Looking at everything though most of the GLK products should be out by April 2nd. So, wait till April 2nd? EOL is in April 202Y, so I assume the actual launch of products will be in April.

It's amazing how well it does against the N4200 and J3455 that have twice the cores.

Do i miss something? Results look very underwhelming when compared to J3350 (which is Apollo Lake 2 core, 6W TDP, 2.4GHz Turbo). With J4005 we are talking Gemini Lake 2 core, 10W TDP, 2.7GHz Turbo.

Examples
CPU mark: 1284 vs. 1625
Novabench CPU: 218 vs. 249

Given the higher Turbo and TDP the result does not look particularly impressive.

Cinebench looking good though, so FP performance apparently has improved nicely.
 
As I posted in another thread, all these benchmarks are running Single Channel memory. i.e Half the bandwidth the CPU could get. May be the speed could be higher with a dual channel setup.

Given it is clearly limited by TDP, I wonder why they dont allow 25W+ TDP and Turbo up to 3.5Ghz+. It is a desktop unit for pete sake, and only using 10W for CPU + GPU?
 
Half the maximum possible bandwidth, but apart from 3D, 19.2 GB/s more than enough for 2 little cores. The timings are on the level of OEM stuff; one can find better for DIY.

If there were overvolted and overclocked Gemini Lake, something like Core i5-8250U seems far more preferable.

Have these small-core/Atom NUCs always had fans? I don't think they ever released an unlocked K-series "Atom" chip have they? Wonder if it would be possible to test your 25W+ theory somehow.

Those surprised perf/watt hasn't really improved - I think this core revision was more about raising the performance level, given there's no longer a requirement for mobile. Widening a core is typically going to eat power, and push perf/watt down , at least without significant power saving initiatives elsewhere to compensate / offset
 
That's indeed quite unlikely, these cores were not designed with frequency in mind.

Even if it was, and maybe it can, because the top clock is 2.8GHz for the J5005, what's the point? The core is intentionally made for very small die and low cost.

If you pay close attention, and throw out some outliers, you can tell how benchmarks behave, and see which one is dominant single threaded vs multi threaded.

TDP makes little difference for these chips, unless its going into a really small form factor. Passmark results show the average N3350 actually does lower than any of the ones on the list, while for J4005 its right on target. PCMark results, which is considered quite a recent test, is quite impressive.
 
It sucks that the new NUCs seem to have been delayed. The dates keep slipping and right now it seems they'll be sent out on the 26th. I'll run Ubuntu on mine and will probably need to wait for Ubuntu 18.04 anyway, but I intend to have some fun benchmarking it with Windows 10 in the meantime. I have 2x4GB DDR4-2400 (14-14-14) and a 256GB Crucial MX100 waiting for the NUC7PJYH.
 
I want the Gigabyte's J5005 board. I like theirs because it has support for CNVi wireless module support and M.2 storage.

I'll be the first to use Optane on a J5005 board! Well, nah, I'll probably get the 660p that's supposed to be really really cheap.

Heres the free summary version. I wonder if they will continue to use Intel manufacturing, ARM on Intel 10nm with Intel 5G modems, could be quite interesting!
If they use the old ARM A7 core, Spreadtrum will lose customers... Mediatek and Qualcomm are already moving to ARM A35 or even ARM A32 which offers way better performance... And Samsung is starting to get serious with their Exynos chips...
