why the fuck do people like this always take shit to some extreme level? why cant they realize there's some middle ground somewhere? or do they just write articles like this to generate a response? reading this article really pissed me off for some reason. I think it was his hipster tone

how about decent quality beans from costco, and a good drip machine? takes less time then making single cup pour over or french press, the beans don't cost as much, but flavor is still exponentially better than maxwell house garbage. That's what I do during the weekdays when i don't feel like wasting time in the morning. on more leisurely weekends though, ill whip out my 100% kona and do a single pour over, or french press

Because moderation doesn't make you feel superior.

Still like using my Aeropress, but still have a Mr Coffee cheapo drip maker also that we use a lot.

I didn't know grinding up something like 8 O'Clock beans was that much work :p

Yeah, I know, burr is supposed to be better but have had one of these little things ages and they are little grinding monsters, even for making rubs and things.

Clearly all the coffee obsession really was for him was an image thing. Being a coffee guy became "who he was", and he liked the idea of being an expert in something more than he ever liked the thing he was an expert in. At some point that image stopped mattering to him, and all the bullshit surrounding it fell away immediately. Now instead of drinking what he thinks looks good to other people, he's drinking what tastes good to him.

I think we all have our own version of the coffee obsession in our youth. Something that we care a little too much about because we think it makes us look good in some form or fashion. Being passionate about something makes us look like people who can be passionate about things, which sometimes gets us laid. That's all it is really.

Just ordered another bag of 8 o'clock - the shit is delicious. On top of that, I had to add a jug of hazelnut syrup.

I didn't say shit. I said good solid beer. Old Style in Chicago. Lion's Head and Yuengling (Premium, not Lager) in Eastern PA. Old German in Pittsburgh.

Every city or area has a solid local beer if you look. And not one of these Cartoon Labeled Hop-Rape Microbrews.

Its become a hipster joke.. but PBR won an international blue ribbon at one point.. When it was a solid good beer of the people.. I am sure its been mass produced to a shell of its former self.. just like Coors/Miller/Bud, but at one point it was likely a solid beer.

There are a bunch of those beers that have been produced since forever and are kept alive and in business by our granddad's.
Drink those. Try them. You'll be amazed.

Been there, tried them; most are about as amazing as a cup of Folgers.

I absolutely agree with you regarding the over-hopping trend, but you're throwing the baby out with the bath water by dissing all micro-breweries.

Laziness, laziness, laziness. Welcome to 'Merica.

It's always about "How can we make the current task take less time?" Even if it's only 5 minutes, they will look for ways to make it 4 minutes. It's really pathetic. It's much less about finding new inventions and more about improving current ones.

Perfect example is the Keurig machine. My wife loves it. I detest it. I see that after the first 3 seconds of pouring it no longer comes out dark/brown and is clearly ~90% fucking water. Guess it doesn't phase her. If I liked coffee I would probably demand to make a pot with fresh crushed beans as well. Good thing I don't care for morning coffee.

We do have a nice espresso machine for weekends though.

Sounds about right. I'm no coffee connoisseur but I can't stand that maxwell house garbage. I'd rather just drink water.

For coffee on weekends maybe we'll brew a pot or use the Keurig, and on weekdays maybe I'll just go to the local coffee shop for their $1.50 coffee unless I have a bit of extra time to use the Keurig. Nothing special, but decent, and way better than maxwell house.

Or else I'll just drink some high quality tea, which is easier to brew and clean (compared to a drip or press) when just brewing a single cup at a time.

Overall I agree with both of you guys as well.

The whole IPA fad is sad and pathetic. Hops is just one of many possible flavors that are to be used in combination. I much more enjoy a delicious, full flavor belgian tripel/quad over the shit most micro breweries are pumping out.

I can see the microbrew hatred as well, ~75%+ of what they release is all pale ale related. They do the occasional dirty witbier or flavorful stout though - and I don't mind trying them.

But nothing compares to the likes of these:

I've never willingly had instant coffee. It's not that i'm a coffee snob, it's just that filling a container with water, scooping grinds in to a filter and pressing a button is an easy feat. Better yet, open keurig, place kcup, close keurig, press a button. Voila.
+1

I'm not a coffee snob by any means... Keurigs or my drip-pot with pre-ground coffee does me just fine, but even I find instant coffee hard to stomach. the only times I've willingly drank it involved camping or power outages.

I remember my mom drinking it back in the early 90's when she wanted a single cup of coffee after dinner without brewing a whole pot, but even she's switched to kcups for that.

I love good coffee, but there is no big deal to it like some make out. Get yourself a good quality machine, meaning espresso machine as that's what coffee is. Buy good beans and grind them properly for espresso. Make espresso with machine. If you like the watered down NA coffee, add hot water to your espresso.

It's not rocket science. No need to be use a thermometer on everything and take it to crazy extremes and start roasting beans yourself :D Instant coffee is pure shit though, fuck that noise.

qftft. Other than convenient factor, I see no reason why anyone owns a Keurig. They clearly have no idea what coffee tastes like. I guess it's the same people who dump 6 packs of sugar and 1/3 cup of cream in there as well. What's the point? Make yourself a god damn milkshake.

I try to at least do my wife a favor and instead of the 1 large cup dump I do 2 small cups. Still towards the end of each pour it starts coming out as water.

She doesn't notice a difference, or doesn't care so whatever. I'll never understand the general fascination with Keurigs.

The wife has a Keurig they use at work so she does buy some for there now and then, but I think she even drinks tea there most of the time.

At home seems would be something I wouldn't care for really.

it's for people who don't care about the taste of their coffee tbh. also, it's expensive, and crappy for the environment too.

and beers, man, there are some beers that are getting out of control, but damn there are some really good microbrews and beers out there like the two you posted earlier :)

So full circle, I have an aero press. What's a good all around coffee I can grind with my burr grinder that won't break the bank but is better than what you can find at hyvee or dillons or starbucks?

Looking for something that will knock my socks off. My wife buys "kona" blend at hyvee and we grind the beans at home. Tastes fine, but I want to taste a really good coffee. I tend to put some creamer in my coffee since most of it is way too bitter for my liking. I'm not a fan of most beer either as it tastes bitter to me, so keep that in mind.

While I never hope to come off as much of an overly entitled snob as the article's author, there is something unnatural about instant mix coffee that I just can't stand.

Wake up, throw whatever Maxwell, Folgers, or generic brand coffee into my Mr. Coffee, shower/eat and have a cup of coffee ready within 10-15 minutes is fast enough for me.

Not sure what you're on about. A Keurig is essentially a drip brewer for single cups. And it tastes like coffee, because it is coffee. My own regular drip brewer essentially can't make anything less than 4 cups. I don't need 4 cups of coffee in the morning.

There are other brewing machines that will brew less than 4 cups, but you still have to use the filters and grind the beans (or buy pre-ground coffee), etc.

Keurig is wasteful for packaging, but its attraction is exactly that - the convenience.

Now there are lots of bad-tasting Keurig K-cups, but you don't have to buy the bad tasting ones.

You can also can skip the pre-made cups altogether and use your own beans.

I use cream but don't put sugar in my coffee. I put a touch of sugar in my espresso though.

I have that but don't use it because you lose the convenience factor, esp. because you have to grind the coffee much more exactly than with a regular brewer. If you grind it too coarse or too fine, it doesn't work right.

Note though that I don't actually drink coffee every day, only consistently on weekends, and occasionally during the week.

Also, I don't use a Keurig 2.0 setup. I believe those are essentially locked to Keurig approved products. I use an older Keurig and PC brand K-cups, which don't actually look like K-cups.
