Has tf2 been ridiculously laggy tonight for anyone else? I played on a few different servers, and everyone was suffering from lag on each of them.

Ugg, no. The only reward for playing should be the enjoyment of it; ADHD players shouldn't be rewarded with better gear. This is the grind I'm talking about. It's not the damned World of Warcraft. Everyone should have access to everything right away, that's how you play an FPS.

This is the opposite of grinding, it's the anti-grind. You don't have to play a single class for a week or two working on getting that last few esoteric achievements to get the final weapon. You don't do anything to get the weapons, just play like you normally do, there's no work involved.

The item drop system is complete garbage. I've clocked almost 10 hours playing since the update and haven't gotten anything. No new items, no duplicates... no item discoveries at all.

Start your own server to get items!

http://forums.steampowered.com...ad.php?t=870341&page=2

EDIT

It seems that the method of using a completely idle server with yourself is either:

a. incredibly slow at getting items (rate of about 1 item per 8 hours)

or

b. doesn't work at all

I think the game reacts to "stuff going on" inside the game. A completely idle server with just yourself sitting in spawn isn't going to do much, so try the following:

1. Try to join a game running the map "achievement_idle," or download it somewhere.
2. Spend time in an achievement_idle server. I did this for 8 hours and got 7 items.
3. Start your own small achievement_idle server USING the console settings below, have it be open to players joining, and just sit there.

The thing about achievement_idle is that you start in a room that slowly drains your health for everyone. So you go through a lot of death/spawn cycles. Not sure what would happen if you went engineer and built a dispenser to keep you alive, but I went as heavy and as I said, I got 7 items in 8 hours on someone else's server. I'm currently trying my own.

Start a new TF2 server. Any options will do. Join your server, select any class, sit in spawn.

Open the console and type: sv_lan 0

Type: sv_pure 1

Type: changelevel achievement_idle

Now open your console back up and look for this message.

Code:

Got pure server whitelist: sv_pure = 1.
Connection to Steam servers successful.
VAC secure mode is activated.

If it doesn't pop up, it's either your router is blocking it or
you are still in LAN mode.

And that's how you check to see if your VAC is enabled.

You didn't need to get all of the achievements to get the final unlock, think it was 2/3ds maybe to get all the new unlockables. Except for the first medic update, for a while you had to get all the achievements to get the ubersaw. They stuck with that for a long time but eventually made it 2/3rds or whatever.

Whats the point of trading if there is not a whole lot of weapons?

If I have 20 + items found, I should have almost every weapon already

The old system made a lot more sense, we just needed more unlockables and unlocks that spanned all classes

I've been camping one of the achievement_idle servers for the past few hours. Picked up a kritz and axetinguisher so far (both duplicates).

Not the opposite of grind at all. I'm playing tf2 just to get stuff even though I'd probably have hacked achievements, got the weps, played for like a couple hours and then stopped. Overall I think I've racked up a good 13 hours and only gotten 1/2 of what I need. So yea I'm grinding. I mean I still like tf2 so it's not like I'm staring at my screen, but it is absolutely grinding. Just think about using achievement_idle to get shit. People actually afk in there to get stuff. It is absolutely grinding and it sucks.

edit: I've always been of the opinion that valve should just give everyone the weapons. This is a multiplayer FPS. Not a goddamn mmo. We don't need diff weapons with levels. We don't need trading. Give everyone the weapons and then the players can have at it.

Let me know how that works for you, I might DL the map and try that on my own now. This new system is absurd. I've probably played 20-30 hours and gotten 1 redundant weapon. Wee.

Idled 2 hours, played 4 hours, idled another 9. I ended up with a ton of weapons. I got 2 dead ringers, 2 huntsman, 2 jarates, and another 6 or 8 duplicate items.

I haven't started my own achievement_idle server because I don't think that it'll work. There's so much vague information on what settings are needed in order to get items that I don't think I want to waste the many hours seeing if things work. For example, it's possible to get achievements but NOT items if you have such and such settings wrong on your server, and it'll be hours before you realize it. Plus I don't think it'll work if you're just sitting in an achievement server by yourself.

This whole thing is friggin' retarded. I've been playing the game a fair deal and HAVEN'T been getting items as a result, so I'm forced to grind and use these achievement servers, and even then the items I get are 95% duplicates. I've seriously gotten 4x of each Pyro, Heavy, Scout, and Medic weapon already, plus a ton of Jarate and Shield and not a single Cloak and Dagger or Huntsman. And I've gotten one of Dead Ringer and Ambassador.

And the Ambassador is a piece of shit. I mean, Valve must have seriously NOT have tested ANYTHING about this weapon! It does LESS damage than the revolver in ALL respects, including headshots, body shots, mini crits, and it doesn't damage engineer buildings at all. The sniper's Shield is retarded because it leaves the sniper with only his rifle and machete plus slows him down a ton. And spies either:

a. just shoot you with the revolver and you're too slow and have inadequate weapons to defend

b. stab you anyway but even WITH the shock to the spy you're STILL too slow and have inadequate weapons to fight back or even run away!

Just imagine if the Ambassador got its damage fixed and 2 headshots could kill a sniper... the shield would be absolutely useless. Spies would just go up to a sniper, headshot him twice, and be done with it.

The more I play the more I'm absolutely convinced that Valve did NO testing and NO *thinking* when it came to the new items and item drop system.

i haven't got anything yet. I saw a guy today with the beanie on. I should have took a screenshot. He said he had 4 hats. It was pretty neat because when he died the hat would fly off his head.

I've been playing all weekend and all I've gotten is a kritzkreig - which of course I already had. :|

I played a bunch over the weekend and yesterday (was home sick) and finally started getting new itmes (I got the Huntsman, Razorback, and Cloak & Dagger).

My comments on the new items I've gotten:

1. Hunstman - I can't use it. Tried playing the Sniper for quite a while with this thing yesterday and I could barely hit anyone. I got one headshot, but it was a complete fluke; I was trying to shoot this Medic that was heading into a tunnel on Dustbowl, but my arrow went left and down and nailed a cloaked Spy in the head that was crouched next to him. The guy claimed hax, but it was a complete fluke, which he realized after looking at my score! Maybe I need to try this thing some more, since I see a lot of people using it and loving it, but damn, it's just horrible for me right now.

2. Razorback - Pretty indifferent to this thing. I leave it on because I rarely use my SMG anyway, but I don't think I've had any spies try and get me while I had it on (maybe it's working then?).

3. Cloak & Dagger - I am now a semi-competent Spy because of this thing. I love just being able to stop anywhere in plain sight and recharge the cloak. It gives me time to strategize and plan routes. Just phenomenal, if not a little overpowered. Easily one of the top 3 unlockables in the game for me.

Great...playtime based unlocks for a game I rarely play. Getting all the unlocks seems pretty damn impossible now.

Did anyone notice that as heavy you can not crouch, shoot and move forward at the same time anymore?

Has Valve posted how they are doing the trading of items ? I realize it is at this point limited to your 'Friends' list, but haven't found anything else out detailing it. I've managed to get two worthless items in an entire weekend of playing (Kritz, Axe -already have).

I really want to try out the C&D after reading KT's post.

This is absolute bullshit. I REALLY want the Huntsman and the Cloak and Dagger.

When I play for real I hardly get ANY items, and the items I do get are 100% duplicates.
When I join an idle server that works, I can get like 6 items in 8 hours, but 100% are duplicates.
When I join an idle server that DOESN'T work, I alt-tab out of the game, go to sleep, only to find out when I wake up that the server shut down an hour later or I got kicked for being IDLE an hour later. This has happened to me about 4 times already.

WTF was Valve thinking?! Why the hell would you purposely try to take control AWAY from your customers? I WANT the Hunstman and C&D. Therefore, I'm ok with WORKING for them, but only if I know that I'll actually, you know, GET them?

Razorback: The only thing that has changed is now I get killed via revolver all the time instead of backstab. Backstab = instantaneous death while revolver = death in 2 seconds. Practically the same.

Heavy is my second least played class, but I think it's always been that way.

Huntsman sucks balls.

Cloak and dagger is a sidegrade. I've got about 100 hours of spy I think... and I never have issues with staying in stealth. It's nice if you want to be lazy, perhaps.

Razorback might be better if they removed the movement speed penalty. As a spy, it's easy to kill snipers even with the razorback... maybe if it was invis or something so the spy would have to gamble on which easy kill... lol.

Huntsman works extremely well if you are good with it. ;) Maybe you just suck at using the Huntsman?
