149 swine flu related deaths in Mexico.

It is Mexico. They arent know for having first rate medical care.

That said the EU is talking about shutting down air travel to and from the Americas if it continues to get worse.

From the WSJ, "Flu pandemics have been known to occur every 25 years or so, and public-health experts have long warned that the next one is overdue. The last two pandemics of 1957 and 1968 together killed about four million people."

This isn't just a few Mexicans, these are 20-50 year old people dying to a pretty brutal virus. I hope we do better at saving people now than we did in '68.

I really doubt the one who carried the flu to Texas, California, New York were on the plane. If you haven't notice, those 3 spot are the Mexico illegal immigrant migration path. I strongly believe that tigten of the mexico border will prevent further virus from entering the US by as much as 99%. The question is will Obama tighten the border to prevent more virus or will they let the illegal immigrant to sneak through, business as usual.

I hear if you voted for the obama your immune to the outbreak.

Mexico faces criticism over extremely poor swine flu response

Two weeks after the first known swine flu death, Mexico still hasn't given medicine to the families of the dead. It hasn't determined where the outbreak began or how it spread. And while the government urges anyone who feels sick to go to hospitals, feverish people complain ambulance workers are scared to pick them up

Foreign health officials were hesitant Monday to speak critically about Mexico's response, saying they want to wait until more details emerge before passing judgment. But already, Mexicans were questioning the government's image of a country that has the crisis under control.

"Nobody believes the government anymore," said Edgar Rocha, a 28-year-old office messenger. He said the lack of information is sowing distrust: "You haven't seen a single interview with the sick!"

It is quite possible that there has been a cover-up, or an attempt at a cover-up. The question is by whome...It may be multiple parties, Government and private industry.

Mexico is almost certainly the epicenter of the outbreak, but US owned Smithfield Foods has been implicated.

Meanwhile, one of Mexico's largest producers, Granjas Carroll, a subsidiary of US hog giant Smithfield Foods, issued its own statement saying there was no sign of swine flu at any of its operations in the states of Veracruz and Puebla. The company's huge facility near the town of La Gloria was first mentioned as a possible source of the new human-swine flu outbreak by Tom Philpott at www.grist.org....

As Philpott pointed out in his post, Mexican newspapers have been reporting for weeks that residents living near Granjas Carroll's massive hog facility at La Gloria are falling ill with severe upper respiratory diseases. One five-year-old girl in the village just tested positive for swine flu - the bodies of two more children who died recently are being exhumed.

Score one for those who steer clear of pork.

Uhhhh...no.

We are over-due for a pandemic. It is only a matter of time....

Luckily we have a Medic, a Scientist, an Operations Specialist, a Dispatcher, and a Researcher.

No, we only have two to four of those, definitely not all five.

Maybe because it came from a US owned swine farm.

I say we blame the south for all their gluttonous pork eating 😛

I predict that Lou Dobbs will warn us that Mexicans will soon be pouring across the border seeking medical care in the US since their clinics are not up to the task.

Don't you love the left leaning critical biased CNN reporting? It's a joint venture between Mexican firm Agroindustrias Unidas de Mexico SA and Virginia-based Smithfield Foods Inc.

Journalism (liberalism) at its finest. Big evil American corps started the flu!!!! We should tax them.

Well, WHO just raised the Pandemic Alert level to 5.

Phase 5 is characterized by human-to-human spread of the virus into at least two countries in one WHO region. While most countries will not be affected at this stage, the declaration of Phase 5 is a strong signal that a pandemic is imminent and that the time to finalize the organization, communication, and implementation of the planned mitigation measures is short.

By your own source, it looks like this pandemic level is based on where the virus is spreading, not on death tolls.
