I'm currently playing with the pitiful 360 controller. I never actually understood why the dpad was bad for fighting games until now. I can't even reliably do a quarter circle forward without jumping. I've been resorting to the keyboard more and more lately for characters that use the quarter circle in their attacks a lot.
One type of character I just don't understand are the charge characters. I mean, I understand them and I can do the moves, but it seems like you'd have to be pretty damn good to get some of these moves off in a match.
But hopefully my control woes will be fixed because I bought a TE Fightstick from buy.com for $125. It'll be here monday.![]()
The game was definitely made to be played using a traditional arcade stick, but be prepared to be frustrated for at 10-20 hours of play before you adapt even marginally to the arcade stick. My advice is to stick with it and hit up training mode for 10-15 minutes anytime before playing to practice getting those motions down. Turn the volume up and look at your hands to while going through the special moves motions to verify your doing the motions correctly and your hands are in sync.
Oh, I'm already generally frustrated
I can't win consistently on ranked matches, and I know this won't change that in the near future. But it will give me room to improve, whereas the 360 controller really wont.

I finally got the game. The SF4 fightstick (SE) isn't that good. Some buttons are VERY sensitive. I glide my finger over the med kick button and it activates. It probably only moved 1mm. I will have to swap all the parts out for sanwa parts.
I could play just fine on the keyboard, BUT it won't me use the 'home' or 'end' keys. Home key was mapped to windows live, but I mapped it to something else. It still won't let me use the key. Also my keyboard doesn't let me send 2 keys at the same time, I need to set up separate key for throws.
Overall, the game is pretty good and smooth. It does seem like it has issues with my cheapo graphics card though. It will freeze after 10 minutes, pause the game, flicker to full black screen then back to normal (windowed) and resume play. Weird.

heh dude, sanwa parts are EXTREMELY sensitive. that issue you explained in your first paragraph is exactly what i did not like when i first switched to sanwa (i was strictly Happ until about 3 months ago). but now that I am used to it, i like sanwa A LOT more than happ. however, just a warning, sanwa buttons are EXTREMELY sensitive, to the point where you can literally just touch it and it activates.

My keyboard doesn't seem to send 2 keys at the same time either, for some reason. Now I either need to dump money into a stick or gamepad. Or a keyboard that supports more key presses. This game seems to be an expensive whim at the moment.

When the moves list shows the joystick being moved to the corner, does that mean if I have a keyboard I need to press two directional keys at once? It keeps looking like I need something besides a keyboard, as much as I dislike considering it.

A hadouken, for example, is just down, right, punch. That's it. A shoryuken (dragon punch) on a keyboard will usually work as Right, Down, Right (It's really Right, Down, Down-Right... but the game doesn't make that clear).

That's odd. What kind of keyboard are you using? Can you jump diagonally?

Not sure it's the case with SF4 since I'm playing with a game pad, but other street fighter games require you to do the diagonal when doing quarter circles. So you have to go down, down-right, right. If you skip the diagonal it won't work. With a keyboard you have to make sure you push right before you let go of down, and this is why I had such a hard time getting used to using keyboard, especially for double quarter circles and half circles. Not that a game pad is much better.

Good god this game is hard. Well actually Seth is the only problem. I can play through Arcade Mode up to him on any difficulty level, but he's redonkulous even on medium. I've heard some people say that they can beat him with ease once they figure him out. Well I know more or less what he's going to do at any time, but I don't know what to do about it. I'm also playing through the challenge mode with Ken and the combos the game expects you to pull off in the hard levels require near superhuman speed and accuracy. I can't believe people actually do that stuff in real fights. To be fair, I'm already doing stuff I wouldn't have believed possible just because I'm practicing so much though.
