Well shaq you're right, the 295 (and likely 285 as well) is going to outperform the 5870 in probably every bench in every game ran at 1024 res, and probably 75% of games ran at 1680x1050. The tables turn when you increase resolution and AA/AF and once you reach the highest end 8xAA on 24" or greater monitors, the 5870 gains an advantage over the gtx295. Once you reach 8xAA 1920/2560 the 5870 is winning 75% of the benches. I would call it a tossup between the 295 and 5870, however you are correct saying they paint it in the best light showing only the highest end 8xAA benchmarks.
In the NFS SHIFT benchmark, gtx285 drops from 95 fps to 51 fps going from 1920x1200 0AA to 2560x1600 4xAA, the 5870 goes from 66 fps to 62 fps.
