A video I've made with the "body in cockpit" bug:

It's really bad now.

Apparently Evocati got their hands on 2.6 PTU Arena Commander this Monday. From the leaked information, there are big changes with SCM speeds (and with other aspects). I hope that we the Star Citizen peasants get to experiment with those when 2.6 goes live (they could reverse the changes by the time 2.6 goes live).

Will Leverett describes it as "a near-complete overhaul of ship mechanics and combat" and "significantly alter combat tactics"

Worlds are about to be rocked.

Seems like it's the beginning of Item System 2.0 and new ship component systems being integrated. What determines the ultimate final speed of a ship will likely more involved than in the past.

Too bad we can't experience that.

What do you mean?

Once most of the bugs are worked out and things balanced, it'll be released to us. Just like every patch. Probably mid-October if I were to guess.

Agreed. But it sounds like it's more than that. They're aiming for closer combat at lower speeds. Boost/Afterburner management will be important (again?...personally I thought it always was).

By the time 2.6 goes live, that balancing could make big changes in this case. So it will not be that different than 2.5. Or maybe not, but we'll never know.

The most interesting part is the explanation about the head stabilization (Vision Stabilization system). Starting at 11:30.

Yep, good article.

Title is clickbait, but they're not suggesting 'troubled' is necessarily CIG's fault. More that it comes with the territory of what they're trying to do.

I agree. I'm surprised to see this level of research from Kotaku, but it's probably the most objective and well-researched piece on the challenges, some of the controversy, and concerns presented with development on this level and with this funding approach.

Title is obviously click-baity, which seems to be how every media outlet rolls these days. At least the content is decent.

Definitely a good article. But it makes me fear for the future of gaming. I cannot get over how much game developers are big, whiny babies.......

Between this article and the one on 38 Studios I'm convinced that some people should never be allowed to attempt to run studios.. and also MMOs are the death of most people.

What do you mean? The Kotaku article you linked wasn't even bad or ultimately suggest CR shouldn't be running CIG.

In fact, it outlined many of the problems they faced due to the situation they were in that is a result of their crowd funding mega success and otherwise problems just due to the nature of establishing a startup company. People are making mountains out of anthills anytime something happens. OMG, somebody quit the studio because they didn't like it! Great, companies are teams. Not everybody can be on a team. Look at Derek Smart. He wouldn't last a second at CIG, even if he wanted to.

The article is rather neutral if not just an honest attempt at explaining were the drama originates. And they explain it as CR basically started building a $15M house in hopes that he could raise enough money to finish it. Instead, they were given $100M. Most of the article addresses the problems they faced when trying to deal with planning and building a $100M house they didn't expect to get to build, all the while trying to decide whether or not they save any of the work from the $15M house they're already balls deep in.

So, did you actually read the article, or just assume it was another hit piece based on the title and come here to spam fud?

EDIT: Also, how is the CIG/Star Citizen situation anything remotely like the 38 Studios debacle? The comparison doesn't make sense.

CR publicly dressing down mid to low level employees would be pretty inappropriate. However, the article gave more of a sense that he would sometimes read his top level producers the riot act in front of each other. If that's the case, so what? When you're dealing with top management that shit is so common and even necessary sometimes imo. People need to not be such babies. If you're going to feed a coworker/manager a bunch of bullshit in front of your coworkers/managers, you shouldn't be surprised when one of them responds in turn by dragging you across the coals in front of everyone.

"Shouldn't run a studio" is a gross overexaggeration, but I think it's pretty clear from the article that CR can be a pretty overbearing micromanager. It is what it is.

From what I read in the article it really comes across that CR didn't (possibly still doesn't) know how to manage a multi-department team. In that article you question my reading, it lists dozens of examples of how teams didn't talk with each other, didn't have the same standards, and in some cases were working on the same things. Someone running a company like this normally keeps a management line in place that makes sure stuff like this doesn't happen. In this case, CR didn't, and it really comes across that he sidestepped attempts to have it in place. From my point of view, that's bad leadership plain and simple. If anything CR was guilty of not fitting into the team he was claiming to make. The article (the only thing I'm basing this on, as I don't play the game, nor follow the drama) gives me the impression that like Schilling, CR had dreams of making the most super-awesome MMO ever created. In both cases it sounds like Duke Nukem as the longer it went/goes on, the more impossible the dream... of course I guess I could be just spamming FUD.

Impossible. The 3.0 demo showed us everything is perfectly fine and normal.

No, it showed us everything is starting to ramp up. I truly want your updated opinion (pm) when 3.0 goes live.

Considering it takes time to build a studio (much less 4 larger ones), every item in that article fell into the growing pains category. This is common across businesses regardless of industry. Plenty of experience with this :)

I enjoyed that article quite a bit, good read.

When do u think 3.0 will go live? I thought the demo was faked personally. I notice a few edit points on whip pans. So I don't think that's gonna come for over 6 months. So again when do u think the mythical 3.0 will arrive?

I mean if you really think the demo was faked (despite being shown to multiple journalists, despite it being live on stage, messing up the unscripted landing, screwing up the Ursa driving, running out of ammo...), maybe I was just wrong about you and we're never going to live happily ever after with our 2.4 kids and white picket fence :(

Or maybe you're still salty trolling, in which case my Sabre still has lap seating available <3
