And now the wait for drips of info on my Sabre until it's flyable. I'm pretty excited about it. Similar role as the Hornet, but faster and more maneuverable.

I definitely see a Sabre in my future. If it flies anything like a Gladius, it's going to be a killer ship.

Total conjecture, but I've seen on Reddit and RSI's subscriber forums that it will probably be something between Gladius and Hornet. The Hornet will still be a tank, but the Sabre will take nearly the beating and be able to out maneuver it. Not as fragile as a Gladius or as maneuverable, but packs more punch and takes more flak in the mean time.

I went back and watched the live video again, and man they need to work on letting us land smoothly. The Connie nearly tipped forward twice. I had trouble mapping the vertical thrust to a rotary switch like I do in Elite that lets me set down softly every time. Seeing the way they take off (jerk up, stop, jerk up, stop) drives me a little bananas. I was hoping for better after seeing the Retaliator land gracefully in the Gamescom demo.

I think I remember seeing something of an IFCS mode that's supposed to dampen the inputs for landing. Just one slide or something.

I've tied vertical / horizontal strafe to rudder pedals, so I have speed control of strafing now, but yeah - - back when I had on/off input for that, it was a PITA to land smoothly or maneuver around objects. I ended up decoupling, tapping down strafe, and gliding down to the pad....way too complicated just to land.

Just finished watching the entire 2 hour presentation. Here are my thoughts:

1) Nothing shown or even mentioned on next phases of social module has me very sad :-( Was hoping to see shopping and/or subsumption. Nothing.
2) Can't wait to play SQ42. This is the game I really want. And the ship I REALLY want to own is that ship that ship brings you to the Staton at the start of SQ42 demo. Anyone know what that's called? It looked like an advanced/modified Aurora/Cutlass hybrid.
3) Sabre - not another bleeping fighter ship sale. There is already way too much pew pew in this game. And we don't need another fighter. Or a ship sale. It felt tacky to me. Now I realize from reading above y'all are excited about it. Sorry to be a killjoy on that. Just one person's opinion.
4) I tried out the star map. It's damn near impossible to use right now. Not sure what the problem is but lots of crashes in IE.
5) I still clung to a brief glimpse of hope that SQ42 would be released as planned (4Q15). It'll be worth the wait for sure, but I don't think we see it for at least a year (4Q16).
6) We must never let Chris Roberts sing. Anything. Ever.

I whole heartedly agree with this post. Especially that the 300 series needs a serious balance pass. I'm not saying I won't own a 325a again in the PU, but as it is right now it's pretty useless.

Yeah, I think the problem is they haven't really followed a design philosophy for "Interceptor" yet.

Historically, interceptor jets have been very fast / fast climbing aircraft designed to intercept incoming bombers / fighters destined for a defined target.

Right now, about the only ships I can think of that I would truly call Interceptors are the 350R or Gladius (and possibly Merlin). The M50 was originally designed for the use (I believe the lore suggests it was going to be a police unit), but with only a pair of S1s, I'm not sure what it will actually do once it catches something besides annoy it. The Merlin would be a much better choice at the moment.

If they would load the M50 with 4x S1 or bake-in an S2 like the Merlin, it would be much more viable. It's one of my favorite ships to fly, so I hope it doesn't get relegated to nothing but a racer.

The speech by Oldman's character was appropriately cheesy has hell. The facial tech is crazy, though i think they need to have the body be a little more animated. His face is very detailed then the rest of his body kinda isn't.

I honeslty am a bit excited if this game is cheesy like the old wing commander games.

I love gary oldman, Rhys Davies, they are great actors who don't snub or judge different mediums. I can almost always expect they will bring their A game regardless of what it is they are doing, and they are nerd heroes in my mind.

I really hope Squadron 42 comes together.

That walk-through of the idris just about blew my mind. Can you imagine what walking through a javelin or bengal will be like? And these are ships that you can fly...

I really like the styling of the Sabre and want one but for the most part I agree. Of all the possibilities why another fighter and why something at the top end of the single seater price scale. I mean outside of the very limited Scythe and Glaive the Sabre is the most expensive single seater released even though it should slot between the $90 Gladius and $155 Super Hornet stat wise.

Instead of a new fighter, how about reveal/release the Avenger variants? You can't tell me it was easier to design and build a new fighter from the ground up than it was to make 1-3 variants for a ship that has been out for almost a year.

I personally was hoping for a smaller "utility" type ship. A small to mid-size mining, salvage, or repair vessel would have been awesome but I know it didn't fit the SQ42 vibe. Oh well, maybe sometime next year.

I have a feeling it will be a very long time before we actually see a flight-ready Sabre. Honestly, I might just skip it and go straight to a Vanguard Warden, which should be flight-ready before as its already in production, and should also be able to shred Hornets and Sabres.

There are still a lot of long-awaited ships that show "waiting for modelling resources" in the production status (such as the 890 Jump).

If SQ42 ships are the priority right now, that would push it out even further. You never know though...single-seat fighters require the least amount of resources.

To their credit, they did concept the Endeavor, which is the type of huge exploration vessel I have been hoping for all along (and it appears to be very well designed).

I agree the Endeavor is huge and well-designed. But CIG needs to understand that not everyone has massive amounts of $ nor the desire to play in the sandbox with large groups of friends.

SithSolo is exactly right: a small utility ship, salvage, repair, mining, etc. is what is NEEDED. If you're a loner like me and you want single seat ships, your options are limited right now to pew pew or hauling cargo. That's pretty much it.

The Sabre just isn't needed.

I hate to say this because I support the game and the vision, but the Sabre really does feel like a cash grab....which kind of supports the naysayers opinion that CIG is running out of money. What do you do when funds get low? Put out another pew pew ship with great marketing (awesome aesthetics, concept art to drool over, etc.)

And it's yet another space ship that looks too much like a bleeping airplane!

Ok. Rant over.

From the Sabre sale page said:
The Sabre has been designed to make use of systems already in place in Arena Commander, to allow it to come online faster than a ship that requires new game mechanics.

That makes it sound like it'll be out sooner instead of later but only time will tell. Hopefully we'll get a little clarification on that in the Q&A due out Friday.

You know, I haven't noticed....but looking through the ship selection you and Sith are absolutely right. The only mining / salvage vessels right now are massive. Definitely some holes in the lineup where that's concerned.

Re: the Endeavor, I'm hoping that NPCs can be hired to run all the crew. I'm also pretty much looking for a solo experience, but I've also always dreamed of captaining a big exploration vessel (yes...I'm a Star Trek TNG fan 😉 ).

Edit: Today's 10ftD clarified that this will be possible, and that they can even be hired as escort (which means if you have landing bay, like the Endeavor, they will be able to help fight / protect the ship under attack by piloting defense ships). This is awesome news if it ends up working well. You can essentially hire your crew based on their skills / attributes.

The Sabre is in the new development pipeline. It's been hinted it can be flight ready within a couple months. If you look at it in the holoviewer you can make out an interior already.

Looking through the artwork, you're probably right. It seems they have the modeling already well underway.

It's kind of cool, but I would much rather have seen one of the other ships (890 or Vanguard) finished up first. 🙁

I understand. I too wish they could just throw the polish on existing ships, but a lot of them are dependent on finalising some game mechanics first. The Hornet could use a competitor and as mentioned it is easy to implement with SQ42 coming.

Hopefully they can transition more ships to the knew pipeline though. I'd love to see some Carrack action.

BTW, the recent 10ftD has good info on NPCs.

Can't you just buy one of the smaller more general purpose ships and outfit it for mining or salvage?

You also need to remember that the Sabre was designed by Foundry 42 for use in Squadron 42. It is a lot farther along than you might think because of that. I mean, if you think about it, they needed this ship to make it more "realistic" in the sense. A real military will have more than 2 or 3 fighters in the arsenal, especially a military that has a few hundred years of history (I mean seriously the USA has active A-10, AC-130, B-1, B-2, B-52, E-2, E-6, E/A-6B, E/A-18, EP-3, F-5, F-15, F-16, F/A-18, F-22, F-35, P-8, U-2... just to name a few...).

Salvage possibly, mining, I don't think so. You need dedicated scanning, drilling, collection, processing, and storage systems on the ship. We might see something that is a lot more crude (essentially, scanner and grapple, which then hauls an entire chunk of rock/spaceship back to a base of operations for processing, but that will use a lot more fuel on moving possibly a lot of useless materials).

So...tempted...to CCU Ghost to Sabre...because pretty cheap right now per concept sale price.

The main thing I like about the Sabre is that it's fixed-weapon oriented. As a joysticker, I have no use for gimbals and turrets. That, and it should be a good bit more fun to fly.

With 4x S3, a pair of Panthers on the nose + a pair of Mantis on the wings would be just dandy.

You need to relax and think about it. How much is this gonna cost you?
Yeah I get it you don't care about cost you want to support the game but how much?

I guess my point is just think about it before you make the jump. I'm still waiting on my AMX-1. I think at this point it would be wise for all of us to be a little cynical about this project.

I budget "x" for entertainment, whether it's movies, music, games, etc. I now have over 40 hours in Arena Commander, so to me, it has been worth the money.

In other words, I haven't spent a dime on this game that I'm not willing to lose if the servers shut down tomorrow.

Heck, I've spent over $100 in gas to go the lake and run around in a boat for 8 hours. All about perspective, I guess. Any form of entertainment is just throwing money at fun...just have to figure out how much you're willing to throw for the amount fun you're getting out of it.
